  • Caseous Abscess in a Shingleback Lizard (Tiliqua rugosa) with Klebsiella
           sp. Infection

    • Authors: Puveanthan Nagappan Govendan, Steven Dwi Purbantoro, Sulham Sunusi, Zefanya Christiani, I Made Beratha Mukti, I Wayan Batan, Slamet Raharjo
Abstract: An adult male shingleback lizard (Tiliqua rugosa), weighing 700 grams was presented with a swelling growth on the left lobe of the head. Clinical examination indicated a mass growth and the lizard was diagnosed with caseous abscess accumulation. Surgical intervention was performed to remove the caseous abscess. Post-surgery treatment consists of enrofloxacin, meloxicam, tramadol, multivitamin, and topical antibiotic cream. Laboratory bacterial culture from the removed caseous abscess revealed Klebsiella sp. infection. Six months after the surgery the shingleback lizard was presented with no swelling reoccurrence in a clinical healthy condition.

  • Molecular, epidemiological, and clinical investigations of Anaplasma
marginale infection in cattle at Qena governorate, Upper Egypt

    • Authors: abdalrahman ahmed
Abstract: Bovine anaplasmosis is one of the most important diseases that threaten livestock production worldwide especially in developing countries, in cattle mainly caused by obligate intra-erythrocytic Anaplasma marginale. A. marginale is transmitted biologically by ticks (Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus). Bovine anaplasmosis causes mild to severe clinical signs ranging from anorexia, fever, anemia, and respiratory manifestations to icterus and death. Molecular detection is the best method for Anaplasma diagnosis because of its ability to detect sub-clinical and carrier hosts. This study investigated the occurrence of A. marginale infection among cattle in the Qena governorate utilizing a molecular assay based the msp5 gene. A total of 100 whole blood samples were collected randomly from apparently healthy and diseased cattle. Such cattle were examined clinically and their samples were included for microscopic examination. PCR screening of the tested cattle showed 23% (23/100) as a positive rate. While 6 samples from 100 (6%) showed A. marginale parasite in the microscopic examination. Several risk factors were analyzed in the current study, higher incidence rates were detected in animals less than 2 years than older than 2 years, Holstein-Friesian breeds than cross-breeds and in animals kept in small farms than in the mass farming system. Clinical and hematological variables were also investigated in several infected and non-infected cattle based on PCR reactivity. Fever, anorexia, respiratory manifestations, enlarged lymph nodes, pale or icteric mucous membranes and digestive disorders were reported in infected cattle (n= 23) but not in non-infected animals (n=77). Consistently, hematological variables in infected cattle (n = 10) revealed significantly lower RBCs count and hemoglobin content than those in  the non-infected group (n=20) indicating hemolytic anemia. This study shows the high prevalence of A. marginale in cattle in Qena governorate associated with health hazards and multi-risk factors, so frequent usage of acaricides, regular examination of cattle, and successful chemoprophylaxis are recommended.

  • Response of broiler chickens to the dietary fortification of bile acid

    • Authors: Ahmed Hussien , Elshaimaa Ismael, Basma M. Bawish, Shaimaa Kamel, Essam Yousef Ismail, Ehab K. El Bendari, Khaled Nasr El-din Fahmy
Abstract: The feeding trial was conducted for 31 days to investigate whether dietary energy modifications using bile acid feed additive (Runeon®) affected broiler performance, carcass characteristics, blood indices, intestinal lipase activity, and broiler's meat quality. A total of 1200 one-day-old Ross-308 broiler chicks (as hatch) were randomly distributed into three groups, each with five replicates (80 chicks/replicate). The first group was a control (T1) which fed a basal diet only. In the second group (T2), birds were fed the basal diet supplemented with bile acid (Runeon®) (on top application) at the rate of 200g/ton. In the third group (T3), birds were fed a basal diet reduced in energy requirements by 30kcal/kg and reformulated with 200g/ton of bile acid (Runeon®). Birds' diets fortified with bile acid in (T2) or (T3) significantly (P≤0.05) improved body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) as compared to the control. The dressing%, breast, thigh, and drumstick yields were improved in T2 and T3 than in control. Supplementation of bile acid significantly (P≤0.05) reduced abdominal fat%, as well, blood cholesterol, triacylglycerol, HDL, and LDL concentrations, but increased total protein concentration (P≤0.05). Additionally, intestinal lipase levels significantly (P≤0.05) increased in groups fortified with bile acid (T2 and T3). Besides, chicken meat moisture% and fat% were significantly (P≤0.05) decreased in T3 compared to T1 and T2. Conclusively, dietary fortification of bile acid could improve growth performance, profitability, carcass traits, serum lipids profile, intestinal lipase secretion, and chicken meat quality in broiler chickens.

  • Investigation of Different Parasites of Farmed Pigeons at Joypurhat
           District, Bangladesh

    • Authors: Md. Mosfiqur Rahim, Md. Golam Azam, Md. Nazrul Islam, Md. Salauddin, Md. Gausur Rahman, Sumon Sarkar
Abstract: The research work was conducted to explore the rate of prevalence and severity of different parasitic infestations or diseases of pigeons of both males and females. Commonly pigeons are infected with endo and ectoparasites. A total of 140 pigeons were observed and collected samples from the different villages of Sadar Upazila of Joypurhat district, Bangladesh. Among males (n=58) and females (n=82), in which young and adults pigeons were 46 and 94 respectively. Ectoparasites (n=4) (Menacanthus sp., Lipeurus sp., Menopon sp., and  Columbicola columbae), helminth (n=5) (Heterakis sp., Capillaria sp., Ascaridia sp., Raillietina sp. and Echinostoma sp.) and protozoan (n= 2) (Trichomonas sp. and Eimeria sp.) were observed and identified from the sample by using conventional laboratory diagnostic techniques, mainly direct smear, floatation and sedimentation were used. The overall prevalence of helminth, protozoa, and ectoparasite was 76.42%, 33.57%, and 90.71% respectively. The highest prevalence rate of parasitic infestation was found in ectoparasite. Adult pigeons are more susceptible to parasitic infestation. The present study revealed the overall prevalence rate for adult pigeons was 81.91% (helminth) which is statistically significant at a 1% level whereas ectoparasitic infestation is 73.40%. On the other hand, young pigeons are less susceptible than adult pigeons for helminth (47.82%) and ectoparasite (67.39%). Based on sex-related prevalence we found that females are more susceptible than males. In the case of protozoan infestation, we have noticed males are significantly higher susceptible than females which are statistically significant at a 1% level. Postmortem examination revealed parasitic blockages in the intestine of both sexes’ pigeons. However, the outcome indicates that the pigeons of this area are more susceptible to infection and infestation, it may be due to bad nurturing practices, climatic conditions, geographical location, which may cause great economic damage to farmers as well the GDP of the country may fall.

  • Relationship between testicular morphometry, vascular waveform pattern,
semen picture, and specific serum testosterone levels in Baladi bucks
           approaching puberty

    • Authors: Khlood Gamal, Aly B. A. Badawy, Elshymaa A. Abdelnaby, Mohamed Fathi
Abstract: This study aimed to determine testicular blood flow with semen imaging and describe accompanying variations in mediastinal thickness (MT), serum testosterone, and semen characteristics in Baladi bucks approaching puberty and sexual maturity. From 5–10 months of age, Baladi bucks (n = 5) underwent B-mode imaging, Doppler scanning, and blood sampling for testosterone assaying once a month. From 7 months, semen was collected and evaluated. The first semen was collected at a mean age of 7.2 months, while the first spermatozoa appeared at 8.3 months, and the mean age of sexual maturity was 9.4 months. The highest semen volume (1.02 ± 0.09 mL), motility (mass score = 5 and individual = 78.00 ± 1.58%), morphology (94.74 ± 1.99%), alive% (85.21 ± 1.32), and semen concentrations (5.24 ± 0.32 109/mL) were noted in buck 4 (9.5 months; 25.0 kg) followed by others. Testicular width (TW) and MT were positively correlated (r = 0.71; P = 0.03) and increased from 8–10 months (P < 0.05). The spectral graph of young bucks revealed an absent end velocity point. Testicular flow expressed by colored area/pixels was positively correlated with age (r = 0.855), accompanied by increased testosterone levels. Semen characteristics and Doppler parameters were not significantly correlated, except Doppler indices negatively correlated with progressive motility percentage. In conclusion, only the testicular Doppler indices are useful for evaluating testicular function and selecting bucks for breeding since these were the only variables negatively correlated with progressive motility percentage. The spectral Doppler velocities were not useful in estimating the full picture of semen quality in sexually mature bucks. These values should be assessed cautiously since many alterations could lead to the elevation or decline of testicular Doppler parameters. Keywords: Buck; Puberty; Colored pixels; Semen; Testosterone.
