Rural economy today is an effective mix of agricultural and animal husbandry. The livestock sector has played a major role and is likely to play a greater role in any future revolution benefiting rural economy. Any type of disease conditions, metabolic diseases, infectious and non-infectious diseases are always threatening to the farmers. Because of these disease conditions, huge economic losses are recorded and ultimately farmers and rural economy get disturbed. Correct and accurate diagnosis of disease conditions near to the farms of farmers, good managemental practices and timely Veterinary services, save lives of costly livestock and prevent economic losses. Fear of losing the costly animals was found to be reduced due to availability of various laboratory tests and diagnostic post-mortem examinations services. Establishment of Veterinary diagnostic laboratories in rural areas definitely increases the faith in health assurance of the animals and this makes farmers and Veterinarians

The present study was conducted on 108 crossbred cows. All cows included had regular estrus cycle with normal estrus but failed to conceive. The animals were divided into 4 pre-artificial insemination and 4 post-artificial insemination treatment groups i.e. normal with treatment (n=18 each), repeat breeder with treatment (n=18 each), normal without treatment (n=9 each), repeat breeder without treatment (n=9 each). The animals not advocated any treatment were considered as control. 30 ml Levofloxacin, Ornidazole and a-Tocopherol were infused intrauterine 10–12 hours pre-or post-artificial insemination and each cow was inseminated at mid-heat. The treatment response was assessed based on pregnancy diagnosis performed per rectum 55–60 days post insemination. The conception rate observed in normal and repeat breeding cows after pre-artificial insemination infusion of Levofloxacin, Ornidazole and a-Tocopherol were 61.11 and 44.44%, respectively against 33.33 and 11.11% in untreated control

A total of eight goats in first/second parity were presented with history of kidding 2–3 days back and edema of udder and teats after 12–24 hours of kidding. On palpation of the udder and teats, the swelling was found to be soft and cold. A watery to serous fluid was aspirated in all goats after inserting 18 gauge aseptic needle directly into the udder and pocket of fluid present in teats. The ‘fingerprint’ test was applied to diagnose the presence of edema. All the goats were treated with Furosemide; Ceftriaxone; Meloxicam; Chlorpheniramine maleate; Vitamin A, D3, E with massage and hot fomentation of the udder. The result indicated that recovery rate from post-parturient udder edema in goats was 87.5% after six days of therapy.

The histopathological findings revealed irregular hyperplasia of epidermis characterized by deep rete ridges along with highly cellular mass arranged in interlacing network with small to moderate sizes of bundles of pleomorphic spindle cells of fibroblast origin suggesting nodular-fibroblastic sarcoid. An area of ulcerations with secondary bacterial infections was also noted. The condition did not respond to standard Anthiomaline treatment hence the growth was surgically excised. Regular antibiotics along with localized antiseptic dressing resulted in complete recovery of animal.

An adult male sloth bear was observed with intermittent unilateral bleeding from left nostrils during summer. The animal was under intensive monitoring and necessary treatment medication was undertaken for forty consecutive days. Behavior based modification in the feeding schedule needs to be performed in order to address incidents of epistaxis in these animals especially which are hyperactive during adverse climatic conditions i.e., peak summer and winter.

      INTAS POLIVET 2021 22(1): 142 - 145
A female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) having malformation of right lower molar was recorded dull, lethargic, head down, showing no interest in feed and water with distended abdomen. The condition was diagnosed as intestinal impaction associated with colic. Immediate treatment was extended with administration of intravenous fluid along with analgesics, antibiotics and antihistamines. Oral antacids, oral and rectal fecal softeners, rectal enema and oral probiotics were also included in the treatment regime. Exercise in respect of long walk was provided to stimulate gastro-intestinal motility. The impaction was expelled after about 48 hours and a fecal ball consisting of mud and partially digested plant materials weighing 26 kgs came out along with 7–8 normal size fecal balls. Fecal softeners and Vitamin B-complex were continued for three days and oral probiotics for five more days. Provision was made for succulent fodder and par-cooked concentrates to avoid recurrence of impaction.

Abstract: Bangar Nikhil S., Arun A. Sha
      INTAS POLIVET 2021 22(1): 146 - 151
An observational study was conducted from August, 2010 to August 2020 in two phases. A total of 532 fecal samples (266 from phase 1 and 266 from phase 2) were collected from captive leopards to assess the impact of feeding on gastrointestinal parasites provided with different feeding patterns on these two phases. During the study period of phase 1, their diet mainly consisted of only beef meat with one day off in a week and phase II was fed only on chicken meat with two days off in a week. The prevalence of parasitic infection in phase 1 was 29.69% (79/266) and that of phase II was 8.65% (23/266), with an overall prevalence of 19.17% (102/532). Results indicated that in both phases of study, leopards were mostly infected by nematodes preferably Toxocara spp. The leopards suffered from less types of parasites when was fed on chicken meat than beef meat.
