  • Selection of Naturally Growing Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) Genotypes in
Yıldızeli and Şarkışla Districts of Sivas Province

    • Authors: Resul GERÇEKCİOĞLU; Ercan TÜRKOĞLU, Murat AYDEMİR
Abstract: This research was carried out in 2018-2019 as the first stage of selection breeding in hawthorn genotypes found naturally in Yıldızeli and Şarkışla districts and villages of Sivas province. Among the total 4497 hawthorn genotypes identified in the study area, 39 healthy, productive and large-fruited hawthorn genotypes, which were determined by pre-selection, were analyzed in the first year with the modified weighted ranking method according to relative yield and fruit size ((by weight) criteria. By means of this analysis, 12 hawthorn genotypes selected from 39 hawthorn genotypes were examined for phenological and morphological observations as well as some fruit characteristics in the second year. These were average fruit weight (g), fruit width (mm), fruit length (mm), number of seeds per fruit, 100 seeds weight (g), soluble solid content (SSC) (%), total dry matter (%), pH and titratable acidity (%). The harvest dates of the genotypes were between September 23-28. In 12 selected hawthorn genotypes, average fruit weights were 3.0-6.2 g, fruit length 13.1-17.7 mm, fruit width 14.7-20.6 mm, number of seeds 2.9- 5.1 seeds/fruit, SCC 16.20-26.3%, 100 seeds weight 7.12-20.3 g, total dry matter 30.61-46.85%, pH 3.30-3.85, TA 0.82-2.75% in the second year. The hawthorn genotypes 58YLDZ19, 58YLDZ20, 58YLDZ17 and 58ŞRKL02, which received the highest scores among these genotypes by the modified weighted ranking method, were suggested as promising cultivar candidates in the first stage of selection.

  • Development of Fig Production and Global Competitiveness Analysis

    • Authors: Bektaş KADAKOĞLU; Bahri KARLI, Alamettin BAYAV
Abstract: This study aims to determine the level of international competitiveness by examining the development of fig production and trade in the world and Türkiye. The competitiveness level of the fig trade, Türkiye ranks first in the world, with 23.30% of fig production and in terms of fig export value and quantity consist of 43.09% and 48.43%, respectively, which implies that it emerges as a significant product in Türkiye’s agricultural production and international trade. In this study, competitiveness analysis was calculated for the years 2010-2021 and Balassa's Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCA), Vollrath's Relative Export Advantage Index (RXA), and Laursen's Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage Index (RSCA) were used in the analysis. The mean index values, namely RCA, RXA, and RSCA were calculated as 57.49, 117.03, and 0.965, respectively. As a result of these index values, it was determined that Türkiye holds a comparative advantage in fig exports, relative export advantage, and highly competitive advantage. According to all index values, it was concluded that Türkiye’s competitiveness of fig export possesses a high share, but it tends to decrease over the years. The most important factor increasing the competitiveness of figs is quality. Factors that will increase quality; Conscious production at all stages from production to sales, attention to cleanliness and hygiene, shortening the marketing period, etc. like this. If these factors are applied, the product’s added value and the unit export price will increase. It is important to consider these factors for Türkiye to maintain and increase its competitiveness in fig foreign trade.

  • The Effect of Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) Process on Physical Quality
           Parameters of Red Plums

    • Authors: Emine ERDAĞ AKCA; Sermet Can BEYLİKÇİ
Abstract: There are increasing losses in the fruit and vegetable industry, especially in the post-harvest season, in spite of various preservation methods. The main factor in the rapid deterioration of fruit and vegetable is the high (85-95%) amount of water in their composition. Freezing technology, which includes the modification of water, has an impact on the quality, shelf life and textural properties of foods. Within the scope of this study, the effect of individual quick freezing (IQF) technology on the physical properties of plums was investigated. Plums were examined in terms of color (L*, a*, b* values, total color change, color intensity), texture characteristics, which are important criteria of consumable; water release, which is an important parameter in frozen products. The freezing rate (0.93℃ min-1) was determined and the freezing graph was created. The mechanical damage caused by freezing was detected by the hardness values (160.05 gForce) before and after the process (459.90 gForce). In conclusion, it is thought that pre- and/or post treatment studies that provides improvements in physical properties to increase the usability of IQF in red plums, which have difficulties such as limited harvest time, shelf life stability despite high nutritional properties.

  • Analysis of Competitiveness in the Stone Fruit Exports: The Case of
           Uzbekistan

    • Authors: Güçgeldi BASHİMOV
Abstract: The agricultural sector has a very important place in the economy of Uzbekistan and constitutes one of the important sources of income for the people. In addition, it provides a significant amount of foreign exchange to the country through exports. For this reason, the agricultural sector is accepted as the backbone of the country's economy. Recently, a significant increase has been observed in exporting agricultural products, especially fruit crops. In the study, the comparative advantage of Uzbekistan in exporting stone fruits such as apricots, cherries, plums and peaches was analysed using the Revealed Comparative Advantages index. This study covers 2000-2020 and the data was obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization and UN Comtrade database. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that Uzbekistan has a strong comparative advantage in the export of stone fruits. In order to increase international competitiveness, more importance should be given to diversifying exports on a country basis and increasing product quality.

  • The Effect of Liquid Worm Fertilizer on Seedling Production in Strawberry

    • Authors: Resul GERÇEKCİOĞLU; Mehtap BERKTAŞ
Abstract: This study was carried out in 2020-2021 on the experimental field of Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture. As a material, the Kabarla neutral day strawberry variety is used. In the study, the effects of seven applications using commercial fertilizer and three doses of liquid vermicompost either singly or in combination on the number and quality of seedlings in strawberries were examined. As a result of the study, it was determined that there were statistically significant differences between the applications in terms of quality of seedling development parameters of the Kabarla strawberry variety and that commercial fertilizer and liquid vermicompost in general had positive effects on seedling development. According to the findings, the highest number of seedlings consisting of mother plant and daughter plants was measured in commercial fertilizer application in the first trial year, while in the second trial year, it was determined that there were similar values. When different fertilizer doses are compared, the best root development in terms of root thickness was commercial fertilizer + S2 (1.50 mm) application, where there was no difference between the applications in terms of the maximum number of roots in the mother plants, while no statistical difference was found between other applications. In the effects of different fertilizer doses (%) on root dry weight, the best results were determined in S2 (56.14%) and S3 (56.11%) applications.

  • Evaluation of the Marketing Structure of Apple Farms from the
           Producer's Perspective

    • Authors: Alamettin BAYAV; Bahri KARLI, Dilek KARAMÜRSEL, Fatma ÖZTÜRK, Orhan GÜNDÜZ
Abstract: This study aims to lay out the marketing structure of apples, which are grown in almost every region of Turkey, from the perspective of producers in the Isparta, Karaman, and Niğde provinces. The data used in the study were obtained from 175 apple producers through a questionnaire. The results showed that marketing patterns vary according to provinces and farm sizes. Of the apples produced in Isparta province, 71.83%, 43.54% in Karaman province, and 9.57% in Niğde province were supplied to the market from cold storage. In Isparta province, 24.01%, Karaman province, 24.19%, and Niğde province, 39.23% of apples were sold in cash. As the size of the farms' increases, the cash sales rates of the farms decrease. In general, 90.90% of producers sold to dealers, 4.60% to exporters, 3.40% to brokers, and 1.10% to supermarkets. Apple marketing has been carried out by individual efforts in all three provinces. The farms reported that they had problems in marketing, that they considered the marketing problem as a limiting factor in production, that the apple price was very low compared to the cost of production and that they had problems due to forward sales. If the farms act together with an organization such as a cooperative, it will increase apple's marketing efficiency. Increasing the cold storage capacity of provinces is also considered an important issue regarding marketing efficiency.
