  • Descriptive Study for Pregnant Women’s Knowledge Attitude and Practices
Regarding Iron Deficiency Anemia and Iron Supplements in the Southern
           Region of KSA

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Pregnancy with iron-deficiency anaemia can put the mother and the infant into a high-risk category, therefore, women need to be aware of the risks and preventive measures. The main objective of this study was to ascertain and measure women’s knowledge, attitudes and practices related to iron deficiency anemia and iron supplements in comparison to their hemoglobin (Hb) blood level in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire and checking the last hemoglobin level reported in patient’s file during the month of March, 2019 at the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinics. Sample size of 342 pregnant women participated in the study. Results: The main study outcomes show that the prevalence of anaemia was 42.5% (mild 23.9, moderate 15.2 and severe 3.8) and the mean hemoglobin level was 11.4 g dL–1. For this study, poor knowledge score was 95, 38% had a negative attitude score and 84% received poor practice scores. Half of the women reported that their main source of information were from family and friends. Only 16% of the women received their health information from a health provider. Conclusion: Health education during antenatal visits from health care providers needs to be personalized to each woman, along with a mass media campaign for awareness purposes in the region.

  • Nutritional Status and Morbidity Profile of School Going Girls Residing in
Two Slums of Jaipur City, Rajasthan, India: A Cross Sectional Study

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: School going girls belonging to compromised background are more prone to poor nutritional status. The objective of the present study was to assess the nutritional status and morbidity profile of school going girls residing in two slums of Jaipur city. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 260 school going girls aged 10-17 years studying in two private schools of Jaipur city. Their nutritional status was assessed by collecting data on weight and height using standardized techniques. The subjects were classified into different categories of stunting and thinness based on height for age and BMI for age indices. A pre tested questionnaire was developed to collect the data on their morbidity profile of one month prior to data collection. Results: Overall, the prevalence of stunting as compared to standard was 30%, of whom 22.7% were moderately stunted and 7.7% were severely stunted. The nutritional status of the subjects regarding BMI for age indices as compared to standard revealed that 20.8% of the subjects were in the thinness category and 9.2% had severe thinness. Almost 46% of the subjects reported to have suffered from some form of illness in the past one month of data collection. Conclusion: Overall, 30% of the subjects were stunted and 30% of the subjects had thinness. Thus, reflecting poor nutritional status of school going girls residing in two slums of Jaipur city.

  • Nutritional Risk Assessment in Critically ill Adult Patients: A Study from
Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Malnourished patients have worse clinical outcomes than their well-nourished counterparts; unfortunately, this relationship is often exacerbated in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to the hyper metabolic nature of critical illness. Accurately identifying patients at risk for malnutrition is essential to decrease negative outcomes during hospitalization. This study aims to assess the nutritional risk in critically ill patients using NUTRIC score-an ICU specific nutrition risk assessment tool. Materials and Methods: Adult patients (>18 years) who were admitted in the ICU and stayed for more than 24 h were included in the study. To identify the patients at nutritional risk, modified NUTRIC score (m-NUTRIC score without IL-6 values) was used. Patients having a NUTRIC sore of 0-4 were classified to have low malnutrition risk and those having a score of 5-9 were associated with worse clinical outcomes. SPSS 24 software was used to analyze the data. Data of 50 patients was analyzed. Results: A total of 84% patients had a high NUTRIC score (5-9) and 16% had a low NUTRIC score (0-4). This clearly indicates that the patients with high NUTRIC score are at nutritional risk. The mortality rate in this study was 12.5% for patients with low NUTRIC score in comparison to 28.6% among patients with high NUTRIC score. Conclusion: The prevalence of nutritional risk in critically ill patients using m-NUTRIC score was 84% in this study. It was observed that high NUTRIC score is associated with increased mortality and increased ICU length of stay and these patients are most likely to benefit from aggressive nutrition therapy.

  • Effects of Weight Loss Percentage on Vitamin and Mineral Levels in
           Patients Undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: The prevalence of obesity has increased rapidly in the past 30 years worldwide. In line with this, bariatric surgery, one of the common treatment methods, has become more frequent. Bariatric surgery could be associated with nutritional deficiencies. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of weight loss percentages on some micronutrient levels in patients undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted as a retrospective clinical research on 41 obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in a private hospital in Antalya/Turkey. Clinical findings and anthropometric measurements were evaluated at 4 different time points. Results: Vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium mean values increased compared to pre-operative measurements. Only zinc values linearly decreased, but the mean values were not measured at deficiency in any month. There was a significant negative correlation in between the change of folic acid levels and the change of weight loss percentages from pre-operative to post-operative 1st month measurements. Conclusion: In this study, when the micro nutrients were evaluated alone, without consideration of the weight change, only the level of zinc decreased. In patients with high weight loss rates, the decrease in folic acid values was statistically significant for the post-operative 1st month measurements. Considering this result, folic acid supplements in larger amounts may be recommended to eliminate this risks that may occur in people who lose weight faster. Based on this result, the relationship between folic acid levels according to weight loss percentages should be examined in more detail.

  • Specialist Children's Obesity Management Services: What Makes a
           Difference in Outcomes'

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Evidence supports multi-component behavioural interventions of greater than 26 h to improve weight status in children and adolescents who are obese. It can be challenging for health systems to provide services at this intensity. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a pilot multidisciplinary specialist service provided to children and adolescents who were overweight or obese and living in Brisbane, Australia. Materials and Methods: All children referred over a one year period were eligible to participate. A retrospective analysis of electronic medical records and appointment records was conducted to collect demographic details, anthropometric measures and appointment details. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather information regarding service perceptions and experiences. Results: 25 children and adolescents (52% male) ranging in age from 4.8-15.3 years participated. There was a statistically significant improvement in BMI z-score for all participants (z = -2.814, p = 0.005) and males showed greater improvements compared to females (z = -2.432, p = 0.015 vs. z = -1.560, p = 0.119, respectively). Discharged participants showed better outcomes compared to those who withdrew. Measures of success were achieved on average in 3-5 h over 12 months, less than evidence-based recommendations. Results should be carefully considered at the systems level and questions regarding service length, setting, participant characteristics, attrition rates and measures of success require further consideration. Conclusion: The results generate important considerations regarding specialist obesity management services from a service delivery and systems perspective. Additional large scale pragmatic, implementation studies are required to help progress this agenda.
