      Abstract: Thermal batteries have high structural stability, reliability, and excellent long-term storage capabilities. Therefore, they are widely used as military power sources, such as deterioration induction weapons, guided missiles, and torpedoes. Commonly, a thermal battery is mounted on a warhead to supply power. The high-speed rotational force experienced by the thermal battery on the warhead generates a strong centrifugal force. Therefore, electrolyte leakage (liquid form) may occur. Here, we devised new equipment to check whether the molten electrolyte in a thermal battery was damaged or leaking when the warhead was rotated at high speeds within the operating temperature of the thermal battery. In addition, finite element analysis (FEA) simulations were performed to predict the types of experimental factors that influence the electrolyte profile and how much centrifugal force induces tensile stress in a sample.

  • Thermophysical properties of Ni-based Waspaloy alloy changed with
           tungsten, titanium and aluminium

      Abstract: We reported new experimental results of thermophysical properties of nickel-based Waspaloy alloy such as the thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity in a temperature range from 25°C to 800°C by using laser flash and DSC(Differential Scanning Calorimeter). The Waspaloy series in experiments was basically prepared with the same chemical composition as commercial model. The amount of tungsten composition of strengthened alloy was adjusted from (0~8) wt.% for WA-LW and WA-HW specimens. The composition of forming the precipitation of gamma-prime (γ´: Ni<SUB align="right">3Ti, Ni<SUB align="right">3Al) of titanium and aluminium was adjusted (2.3~3.0) wt.% and (1.4~1.8) wt.%, respectively for WA1 and WA2 specimens. The thermal conductivity values of added tungsten composition were decreased due to the distortion of ordered face-centred cubic (FCC) structure and phonon scattering. The experimental values of thermal properties of WA1 and WA2 also showed the effect of changed composition of titanium and aluminium. The results of Waspaloy series were shown with each data and relative deviation plot vs. basic composition of Waspaloy alloy. Specific heat capacity of Waspaloy series was compared from the continuous data plot. In conclusion, the results of thermophysical physical properties of Waspaloy series can be very useful in thermal design, thermodynamic simulation, and the analysis of heat treatment in high temperature.

  • Effect of precipitation of silicone oil-based nanofluid on thermal
           conductivity

      Abstract: This study investigated the effect of the precipitation of nanofluid additives on thermal conductivity in various environments using a bidirectional 3 omega (3ω) method. Silicone oils with viscosities of 50, 500, and 1000 CS were used as the base fluid. Nanoparticles containing aluminium spheres of 100 nm diameter were added to the base fluid at a mass ratio of 0.5%. The experimental set-up was designed and fabricated, and the bidirectional 3ω method was verified by measuring the thermal conductivity of the well-known liquid. Using the nanofluids, thermal conductivities were measured at various temperatures and viscosities. The measurement results are discussed with respect to the elapsed time of precipitation. In addition, the effect of penetration depth on the thermal conductivity is investigated.

  • Evaluation on the photothermal conversion performance of SiC nanofluid for
           a direct absorption solar collector

      Abstract: In this study, the application possibility of SiC nanofluid in direct absorption solar collectors (DASCs), the dispersion stability, light absorption characteristics, and photothermal conversion performance of SiC nanofluid were experimentally investigated. In particular, the dispersion stability of SiC nanofluid according to pH concentration and the type of surfactant was evaluated using light transmittance. As a result, it was confirmed that the SiC nanofluid had the highest dispersion stability when the pH concentration was 7 and the PVP surfactant was used. Also, when the light transmittance was decreased with the increase in the extinction coefficient of light when the concentration of SiC nanofluid increased from 0.001vol% to 0.005vol%. However, even though the light absorption increased with increasing concentration, the photothermal conversion efficiency reached the critical value at 0.004vol%, and decreased at 0.005vol%. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the 0.004vol%-SiC nanofluid was improved by 81.6% compared to that of water.

  • Study on the optical characteristics according to the anion and cation in
           the ionic liquid and MWCNT ionanofluid

      Abstract: In this paper, the light absorption rate with changes in cation and anion of MWCNT ionanofluid was investigated and compared to that of ionic liquid (IL). As a result, the light absorbance of [C<SUB align="right">12MIM][Tf<SUB align="right">2N] with a larger cation radius was higher than that of [HMIM][Tf<SUB align="right">2N]. In addition, the light absorbance of [HMIM][Tf<SUB align="right">2N] was lower than that of [HMIM][TfO]. When the MWCNT nanoparticles were added to IL, the light absorbance was increased. As the thickness of the fluid layer increased, the solar weighted absorption fraction was also increased; however, the increment of solar weighted absorption fraction in [HMIM][TfO] IL and ionanofluid increased compared to that of [HMIM][Tf<SUB align="right">2N] and [C<SUB align="right">12MIM][Tf<SUB align="right">2N]. Thus, light absorbance increases because molecules interfere with the light transmission as the bonding force increases when the cation is large or the anion is small, and the crystallisation temperature is relatively high.

  • Measurement of thermo-optic coefficient of silicon dioxide nanofluid
           using interferometer

      Abstract: Nanofluid technology has attracted considerable research attention in recent years. A Michelson interferometer was constructed, and a silicon dioxide (SiO<SUB align="right">2) nanofluid was placed in the optical path. The thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) was obtained by counting the moving interference fringes while increasing the nanofluid temperature. Two nanofluid samples were prepared by dispersing 20 nm and 80 nm SiO<SUB align="right">2 nanospheres in distilled water and conducting the experiments at two wavelengths, 532 nm and 633 nm. In the 20 nm SiO<SUB align="right">2 nanofluid, the TOC changed from 8.038 × 10<SUP align="right">-5</SUP>/ºC to 1.695 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC as the temperature was increased from room temperature to 70°C at a wavelength of 532 nm, and the TOC was changed from 6.634 × 10<SUP align="right">-5</SUP>/ºC to 1.534 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC at a wavelength of 633 nm. In the 80 nm SiO<SUB align="right">2 nanofluid, the TOC changed from 1.322 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC to 2.359 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC as the temperature was increased from room temperature to 70°C at a wavelength of 532 nm, and the TOC changed from 1.138 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC to 2.261 × 10<SUP align="right">-4</SUP>/ºC at a wavelength of 633 nm.

  • Measurement of thermal diffusivity of gold nanofluid according to particle

      Abstract: The thermal diffusivity of a gold nanofluid containing 20, 40, or 80 nm particles prepared by dispersing gold nanoparticles in ethylene glycol was measured from room temperature to 80°C using the thermal lens effect in dual laser beam mode consisting of an excitation laser (532 nm) and a probe laser (633 nm). Three samples with three different nanoparticle sizes were prepared at the same concentration (3 × 10<SUP align="right">-5</SUP> wt.%). The thermal diffusivity was 1.020 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (20 nm), 1.379 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (40 nm), and 2.126 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (80 nm) at RT, and 1.211 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (20 nm), 1.784 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (40 nm), and 2.758 × 10<SUP align="right">-7</SUP> m<SUP align="right">2</SUP>/s (80 nm) at 80°C. Overall, the thermal diffusivity of a gold nanofluid was proportional to the nanoparticle size and increased with increasing temperature.

  • Evaluation of sorption test of iodide on carbon nanotubes to support
           anionic radionuclide immobilisation method

      Abstract: Anionic radionuclides show one of the highest risks to the long-term safety assessment of disposal repository. They are highly mobile because of their high solubility and low adsorption tendency towards the solid media under the aqueous environment. Thus, techniques relevant to immobilisation of anionic radionuclides are of crucial importance. Here, we conduct sorption test of iodide onto carbon nanotubes, which are the key components needed for immobilisation strategy suggested. Iodide showed no sorption onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) regardless of functionalisation, whereas single-walled carbon nanotubes showed better sorption depends on functionalisation. We expect the results obtained will support our immobilisation method for anionic radionuclides and complement iodide sorption onto the composite of carbon nanotube and transition metals in the immobilisation strategy.

  • Analysis of combustion characteristics using CPFD in 0.1 MWth oxy-fuel

      Abstract: This study used computational particle-fluid dynamic (CPFD) analysis techniques to analyse the fluidisation and reaction characteristics in a 0.1 MW<SUB align="right">th oxy-fuel circulating fluidised bed (oxy-CFB) combustor. An oxy-CFB 3-dimensional model incorporated with various reaction kinetic models as stated in previous studies is used to predict the flue gas compositions. The gas and solid profiles in the oxy-CFB combustor shows a typical CFB structure consisted of dense and lean phase in the combustion chamber. Furthermore, the formation of CaSO<SUB align="right">4 particles is evidence of a direct desulfurisation reaction between CaCO<SUB align="right">3 and SO<SUB align="right">2 in the oxy-CFB combustor. As a result, a continuous direct desulfurisation of CaCO<SUB align="right">3 occurred in the reactor, which is expected to achieve maximum conversion in the long term.

  • Numerical study on thermophoresis of dust in air

      Abstract: Aerosol particles tend to move from high-to low-temperature areas through the thermophoresis effect. The thermophoresis effect can cause accumulation and an increased concentration of dust on a low-temperature surface. In this study, the thermophoresis of dust in the vicinity of hot and cold microheaters is analysed through a numerical simulation. Operating parameters such as temperature difference between hot and cold microheaters, the thermal diffusion coefficient of dust, the diameter of a dust particle, the distance between two microheaters, and initial dust concentration are analysed. Calculation results show that the temperature difference between two microheaters, thermal diffusion coefficient, particle diameter, and initial dust concentration have a linear relationship with the concentration of accumulated dust in the vicinity of the cold microheater. Through this study, further understanding of thermophoresis of dust in air mixture can be obtained and used to accurately measure the dust concentration depending on the size of the dust particles.

  • Analysis on measurement of hydrogen concentration in air mixture using 3
           omega method

      Abstract: Thermal conductivity of hydrogen is the highest compared with that of other gases, and it is approximately seven times greater than that of air. Therefore, several hydrogen concentration detection techniques are based on the thermal conductivity measurement of a sample gas. Measurement of thermal conductivity is susceptible to limitations during the detection of hydrogen in the low-concentration range compared with that of electrochemical or catalytic measurements. However, accurate measurement of hydrogen volume fraction of 4% or greater is possible. Therefore, in this study, the feasibility of a high-spatial resolution thermal conductivity measurement technique, the 3 omega method, was analysed for measurement of a mixture of hydrogen and dry air. The temperature amplitude and phase lag at the microheater on a polymer and a glass substrate are calculated as a function of input heating frequency and hydrogen concentration.
