      We have presented a CMOS-based NMR platform featuring arbitrary phase control and coherent detection in a non-zero intermediate frequency (IF) receiver architecture as well as active automatic temperature compensation. The proposed platform is centered around a custom-designed NMR-on-a-chip transceiver. The entire system achieves a phase stability well below 1° in consecutive pulse acquire experiments and keeps a normalized standard deviation in the measured T2 values of 0.45 % over 100 min.

      Egyptian mummies were covered with an enigmatic black organic matter. Its chemical composition is classically determined by molecular analysis methods, which are destructive by nature. In a new analytical approach based on 1H and 14N magnetic resonance, we use V4+ ions, existing at trace level in this black matter, as an internal paramagnetic probes for a non-destructive exploration of the material. The results suggest that a common recipe was used for animal and human mummies of different ages.

      We extend an approach for visualizing dynamics of quantum spin systems based on angular momentum probability (AMP) surfaces to visualizing coherences via angular momentum coherence (AMC) surfaces. AMP/AMC surfaces conveniently represent symmetries of density matrices and allow spotting their presence (orientation, alignment, etc.) or absence even when direct analysis of density matrices is not obvious. We apply novel visualization approach to represent relevant cases of 2-spin system dynamics.

      Installing a tag containing a paramagnetic metal ion on a protein can lead to large changes (pseudocontact shifts) in the resonances observed in NMR spectra. These are easily measured and contain valuable long-range structural information. The present work shows that a single tagging site furnished with different tags can be sufficient to localise atoms in proteins with high accuracy. In fact, this strategy works almost as well as the same number of tags distributed over multiple tagging sites.

      In contrast to adiabatic excitation, recently introduced SORDOR-90 pulses provide effective transverse 90° rotations throughout their bandwidth, with a quadratic offset dependence of the phase in the x,y plane. Together with phase-matched SORDOR-180 pulses, this enables a direct implementation of the Böhlen–Bodenhausen approach for frequency-swept pulses for a type of 90°/180° pulse–delay sequence. Example pulse shapes are characterised, and an application is given with a 19F-PROJECT experiment.

      We report in this article a multiscale approach for explaining why the transport of fluids in oil shales is so hindered. Thanks to nuclear and electronic magnetic resonances, we first demonstrate that the kerogen within the shale is capable of swelling in the presence of oil, second we show that this swelling is reversible and reveals the presence of vanadyl porphyrin by breaking magnetic interaction. The magnetic locking evidenced here helps understanding the very low mobility of hydrocarbons.

      We show here that binding of the anticancer drug imatinib to the ATP site of Abelson kinase and not binding to its allosteric site coincides with the opening of the kinase regulatory core at nanomolar concentrations. This has implications for the understanding of Abelson’s kinase regulation and activity during medication as well as for the design of new Abelson kinase inhibitors.

      This work provides some clarifications on the long-known Redfield theory of spin relaxation, which considers a small system coupled to a large ensemble of particles in thermodynamic equilibrium.       Through the advent of fast magic-angle spinning and high magnetic fields, the spectral resolution of solid-state NMR spectra has recently been greatly improved. To take full advantage of this gain, the magnetic field must be stable over the experiment time of hours or even days. We thus monitor the field by simultaneous acquisition of a frequency reference (SAFR) and use this information to correct multidimensional spectra improving resolution and availability of productive magnet time.

      This paper explores a method for determining the solution structure of a solvent-exposed polypeptide segment (the L3 loop), which is next to the active site of the penicillin-degrading enzyme IMP-1. Tagging three different sites on the protein with paramagnetic metal ions allowed positioning of the L3 loop with atomic resolution. It was found that the method was more robust when omitting data obtained with different metal ions if obtained with the same tag at the same tagging site.

      We present the ongoing work of a large, community initiative to establish standards for the processing of nonuniformly sampled NMR experiments. The NUScon software, contest, and archive of spectral evaluation data provide a comprehensive platform for addressing the most challenging questions related to NUS experiments. We will run annual contests and generate a database of results, which will empower us in guiding the NUS community towards a set of best practices.

      We demonstrate the formation of spin noise echoes which occur after the application of opposite sign magnetic field gradients to an ensemble of spins. Exploiting this phenomenon, diffusion and spin relaxation parameters in concentrated samples can be determined from nuclear spin noise spectra acquired after tailored sequences of pulsed magnetic field gradients. These methods do not require any excitation from a radio frequency source.

      To increase experimental efficiency, information can be encoded in parallel by taking advantage of highly resolved NMR spectra. Here we demonstrate parallel encoding of optimal diffusion parameters by selectively using a resonance for each molecule in the sample. This yields a factor of n decrease in experimental time since n experiments can be encoded into a single measurement. This principle can be extended to additional experimental parameters as a means to further improve measurement time.

      The signals that are attainable in conventional NMR are tiny, and consequentially, NMR is often slow and insensitive. The intensity may be increased by hyperpolarization, provided that the spectral quality is essentially preserved. We have recently reported a potentially powerful hyperpolarization scheme, named bullet-DNP (dynamic nuclear polarization). Here, we report a 10-fold improvement in resolution for that method, which may enable new applications in metabolomics and drug discovery.

      Fluorine NMR was used to study the interaction between a proline-rich peptide and a SH3 domain using 4S- and 4R-fluorinated prolines whose potential as NMR probes has not been exploited yet. We present a comprehensive study addressing several aspects to be considered when using these residues as NMR probes, including relaxation and dynamics. We show that their conformational bias may be used to modulate the kinetics of protein binding to proline-rich motifs.

      We describe a suite of experiments that exploit field-dependent relaxation measurements of four-spin transitions in methyl groups to characterise chemical exchange processes and which can be used as an alternative or complement to CPMG relaxation dispersion measurements. We show that these four-spin transitions benefit from the methyl TROSY effect and so provide a unique combination of slow intrinsic relaxation and high sensitivity to chemical exchange.

      The Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank (BMRB) has been used to identify overall trends, for example, the relationship between chemical shift and backbone conformation. The BMRB archive has grown so that statistical outliers are sufficiently numerous to afford insights into unusual or unique structural features in proteins. We analyze amide proton chemical shift outliers to gain insights into the occurrence of hydrogen bonds between an amide NH and the p-pi cloud of aromatic sidechains.
