    • Abstract: Abstract: Introduction: Child health is conditioned by the circumstances of pregnancy, childbirth, and early life. Objective: To describe the maternal and neonatal characteristics of live births (LBs) in the Information System on Live Births of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazil. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study describedthe maternal and neonatal characteristics of 940,059 LBs, from 2010 to 2019. Pearson’s chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test were conducted, with a statistical significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The mean values of maternal age, number of live children, and number of fetal deaths as well as abortions were 27.1 years, 0.9, and 0.2, respectively. The averages of the number of gestation weeks, number of prenatal consultations, the start date of the prenatal care, and birth weight were 38.5 weeks, 8.1 months, 2.5 monthsand 3,217.1 grams, respectively. Low birth weight (LBW) was prevalent among mothers without education (p < 0.001), including those without prenatal visits (p < 0.001). A higher prevalence of being underweight was observed among female neonates (p < 0.001) and with a maternal age of ≥ 40 years (10.8%; p < 0.001) compared to newborns with good vitality. Newborns with good vitality had a low prevalence of underweight (p < 0.001). The frequency of the variables studied increased, comparing the beginning and end of the period and whether the differences are statistically significant. Conclusions: The study draws attention to the need for interventions to improve the indicators that determine LBW.Resumen: Introducción: La salud infantil está condicionada por las circunstancias del embarazo, parto y primeras etapas de la vida.

Abstract: Introduction: Little is known about the association between cardiometabolic markers in preschoolers with family nutritional and socio-demographic characteristics. Objective: To determine the association between cardiometabolic markers in preschoolers and their parents with family nutritional and sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and methods: cross-sectional study of association and correlation between parent-child variables, multicenter, 140 subjects participated (70 preschoolers and their respective parents). The variables were nutritional status, body composition, prehensile strength and blood pressure of parents and their preschool children and sociodemographic variables of the families. Results: There was a significant difference at 5% between parents' obesity and children's obesity, with a positive correlation (0.397) between the variable "percentage of fat" parents/children. In relation to the "mother's level of schooling" there was a significant difference with the "percentage of fat" of the children (p<0.011). Similarly, there was a significant difference (p=0.033) between the variable " Having siblings " with respect to the variable "percentage of fat" of the children. Finally, there was an association between "Tablet use" (audiovisual device) and "blood pressure" of the children (p=0.030). The variable "Tablet use" was significantly associated with the "prehensile strength" of the children (p=0.044). Conclusions: obese parents with a high percentage of fat have preschool children with a low cardiometabolic profile; the variables lower educational level of the mother and having siblings were associated with a higher percentage of fatness in children; together, the use of Tablet in preschoolers showed higher levels of blood pressure and lower prehensile strength.

Abstract: Introduction: excessive malnutrition causes overweight and obesity, being a public health problem, which has occurred in the first years of life. Research has reported the existence of body dissatisfaction related to weight, due to beauty standards established in society. Objective: to associate the BMI with body dissatisfaction and body image perception of schoolchildren. Materials and methods: cross-sectional study of 610 schoolchildren. Nutritional status was classified according to the BMI z score. To determine body dissatisfaction and body image perception, a child body image scale of seven photographs was applied, with a value of 1 to 7 according to the increasing size, and the final range of the BMI. The difference between the figure that participants considered ideal, and the perceived body shape was calculated. Results: 47.3% were overweight and obese. Body dissatisfaction was higher in overweight and obese girls (p = 0.013). BMI correlated with body dissatisfaction (rho (608) = 0.480; p < 0.001) and body image perception (rho (608) = 0.433; p < 0.001). Conclusions: BMI was positively related to body dissatisfaction and body image perception; this could increase the risk of developing eating disorders, contribute to the maintenance of excess body weight, as it is not perceived with excess weight, are less likely to take actions to control it.

    • Abstract: Abstract: Introduction: In areas with limited access to healthcare systems, Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) estimation is performed using predictive equations to calculate an individual’s caloric requirement. One problem is that these equations were validated in populations with different characteristics from those in Latin America, such as race, height, or body mass, leading to potential errors in the prediction of this parameter. Objective: To determine the REE using predictive formulas compared with bioimpedance in Peruvians. Materials and methods: A comparative analytical cross-sectional study with secondary database analysis of the CRONICAS cohort. Results: we worked with a total of 666 subjects. The Mjeor equation was the one with the highest rating of 0.95, a lower mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 4.69%, and equivalence was found with the REE values. In the multiple regression, it was observed that the Mjeor equation was the one that least overestimated the REE, increasing 0.77 Kcal/day (95% CI: 0.769-0.814; p<0.001) for each point that increased the REE determined by bioimpedance. The strength of association between Mjeor and bioimpedance was 0.9037. Furthermore, in the regression of the data (weight, height, age) in the Mjeor equation it was observed that the coefficients obtained were the same as those used in the original equation. Conclusions: The Mjeor equation seems to be the most adequate to estimate the REE in the Peruvian population. Future prospective studies should confirm the usefulness of this formula with potential utility in primary health care.

Abstract: Introduction: Dysphagia is a condition that affects the efficiency of food swallowing. Globally, one-third of the elderly population suffers from some degree of dysphagia, representing a high risk of malnutrition due to the lack of dietary options tailored to their nutritional requirements. Objective: This research aimed to develop modified texture lunch formulations for dysphagia patients using typical Dominican raw materials. Materials and methods: Two lunches of different compositions [sancocho (S) and rice with beans and meat (AHC)] and viscosities (nectar: 51-350 mPa.s; honey: 351-1,750 mPa.s and pudding: 1,751-2,500 mPa.s) were made and evaluated for proximate chemical analysis and sensory acceptance. A completely randomized design was used, under factorial arrangement (2 x 3). Results: Differences were observed between treatment means (P<0.05) for moisture and carbohydrate content concerning compositions; viscosity analysis showed differences in moisture, fat, protein, and carbohydrate content, while compositional and viscosity interactions exhibited statistical similarities in ash and fat percentage. It was found that the more viscous treatments and composition S were better rated, and overall sensory performance of the lunches was satisfactory. Conclusions: The food (cream type) with Dominican raw materials, sensorially accepted, could be used and also accepted in patients with dysphagia.

    • Abstract: Abstract: Low-middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing challenges for reaching outstanding performance on indicators related to wellbeing during the first 1000 days of life, therefore it is expected to observe difficulties for improving their Human Capital Index (HCI). These come from the impact of inadequate antenatal care, maternal short stature, inadequate breastfeeding, prematurity, low birthweight, small for gestational age newborns, and pregnancy in adolescent years on human capital from the first thousand days of life to long term on life. Therefore, the aim of this study was to implement a non-systematic review of the existing literature between February 2000 and October 2022 using MeSH terms related to each factor. Results: in LMICs antenatal care does not meet the required goals. High rate of adolescent pregnancies, and lower maternal stature are being reported; 6.5 million newborns in LMICs are small for gestational age, 50% LBW newborns are preterm. Exclusive breastfeeding is low in LMICs: 28-70%. Survival, schooling, and health are strongly associated with growth and adult height showing the impact of the disadvantages experienced in early life over HC. We can conclude: the determinants of good health in the first 1000 days of life do not meet the goals needed to improve growth and health during this critical period of life in LMICs, leading to important obstacles for achieving adequate health conditions and reaching an optimal HCI.Resumen: Los países con bajo y medianos ingresos (PBMIs) enfrentan el reto de disminuir las brechas para alcanzar las metas en los indicadores de bienestar durante los primeros 1000 días de vida, de lo contrario presentarán dificultades para mejorar los Índices de Capital Humano (ICH).

Abstract Introduction: Celiac disease is a multisystem autoimmune disorder that triggers a reaction to the protein gluten found in foods such as wheat, rye, triticale, barley, spelt, and oats. The most common symptoms of coeliac disease are weight loss, loss of appetite and general fatigue among others. As a result of these symptoms, athletic performance may be affected. Objetive: To understand how celiac disease impacts athletes' performance, the aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review related to sports performance in individuals with celiac disease. Materials and method: To do so, the following search phrase was used: "Celiac" AND "Sport" AND "Performance", which was entered equally in the following databases: Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed. Results: The results show the existence of few documents related to the object of study (n=11), where a variability of design types is shown in the selected works. On the other hand, the only solution to maintain adequate sports performance in a person with coeliac disease is to follow a gluten-free diet for life. Conclusions: The selected documents emphasize the importance of athletes with celiac disease maintaining a gluten-free diet consistently throughout their lives. Due to the scarcity of studies related to this topic, it is recommended to increase the number of research studies on this subject in order to improve the lifestyles and habits of athletes with celiac disease.
