    •
  • IMPACT OF SANITIZING FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ON WATER CONSUMPTION AND THEIR
           MICROBIOLOGICAL PROFILE

Estes dados salientam a importância de reduzir o consumo de água, sem comprometer a segurança alimentar, contribuindo para os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável definidos pela Agenda 2030.ABSTRACT The way food is handled can have an impact on food safety. As a result, chlorine-based products are widely used to disinfect fruit and vegetables. However, questions have been raised about its safety for public health and the environment. It is also important to consider the impact of this food sanitation on potable water use. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of sanitizing fruit and vegetables on water consumption (phase I) and on their microbiological profile (phase II). In phase I, water volume was quantified after washing fruit and vegetables with potable water (V0 ) and when sanitized with sodium hypochlorite (70 ppm) followed by rinse (V1 ). The average volume of water in V0 was 30% of the total volume, while the volume in V1 was 70%. In phase II, samples of unwashed fruit and vegetables (T0 ), washed with potable water (T1 ) and sanitized with sodium hypochlorite (70 ppm) followed by rinse (T2 ) were analyzed. No significant difference was observed in the number of conforming results in T0 , T1 and T2 . Therefore, the results obtained suggest that the sanitation of these foods may be dispensable. The elimination of this procedure can lead to medium annual saving of 20 531 477 L of water. These data highlight the importance of reducing water consumption, without compromising food safety, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals shared by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

  • NUTRI-YOUNG: IMPACT OF SOCIOECONOMIC CONTEXTS ON EATING HABITS, LIFESTYLES
           AND BODY SATISFACTION OF ADOLESCENTS

The structuring of health-promoting behaviors, but also risky behaviors often occurs during adolescence, as well as changes in body composition and body image. All of these changes clearly have an important role in future health and quality of life, thus their quantification are of utmost importance. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate eating behaviors and other lifestyles of high school students, their satisfaction with body image and nutritional status; ii) to study the clustering of several less healthy lifestyles; iii) to establish a comparative analysis between two education institutions with different sociodemographic backgrounds. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted, comparative of two education institutions in the metropolitan area of Porto (Portugal), a Professional School and a Private and Cooperative School. The students, after consent from their legal representative, answered to structured questionnaires about the study dimensions, including a validated food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were performed by trained observers. RESULTS: There is a high prevalence of risk behaviors in both education institutions, particularly at the Professional School, with a less favored socioeconomic context. In general, these appear to have a less healthy pattern of lifestyles (mean 2.36 vs. 2.73, p=0.021; variation range: 0 to 5). The prevalence of macro and micronutrient inadequacy was significantly higher at the Professional School, although both institutions presented an inadequate intake of sodium above 75%. The majority were unsatisfied with their body image (79.2% Professional School; 61.6% Private and Cooperative School, p=0.162). The prevalence of students with overweight and obesity was high, higher than 30%. CONCLUSIONS: There are relevant differences in eating habits and other lifestyles between students from schools with different sociodemographic background. This knowledge could help as a future basis for the development of interventions and contribute to an effective improvement of the school environment, expected to promote health.

  • ANALYSIS OF WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS LABELLING AND POSSIBLE IMPACT ON
           CONSUMER HEALTH

CONCLUSÕES: Os suplementos alimentares que visam a perda de peso apresentam uma grande diversidade de substâncias em diferentes combinações e dosagens, que para além de não apresentarem robustez na evidência do seu benefício como auxílio no tratamento da obesidade, podem apresentar potenciais riscos para quem os consome.ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Although the available scientific evidence doesn’t show clinical utility in the use of the majority of weight-loss food supplements and regarding the frequent problems with the quality, safety and benefit of these food supplements, they are still a prevalent weight-loss strategy. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the labeling of weight loss supplements in Portugal, exploring potential risks of their ingredients, and reviewing their weight loss benefit using the available scientific literature. METHODOLOGY: Between March and April 2023, 40 food supplements for weight loss were randomly collected from supermarkets in Lisbon, and their labeling was analyzed. RESULTS: The most common substances, mostly combined, and in very variable dosages, were chromium picolinate, Cynara scolymus L., Taraxacum officinale, Camellia sinensis, Citrus aurantium, Silybum marianum and Garcinia cambogia. Unfounded health claims were identified and the substances identified either don't have randomized controlled clinical trials on their impact on weight loss, or when they do, their demonstrated benefit is low or non-existent and they present some risks from a safety point of view. CONCLUSIONS: Food supplements aimed at weight loss have a wide range of substances in different combinations and dosages, which, in addition to not being robust in their effectiveness as an aid in the treatment of obesity, present potential risks for those who consume them.

  • LOW FODMAP DIET AND ENDURANCE ATHLETES

Assim, o objetivo desta revisão foi analisar os possíveis efeitos de uma Dieta Low FODMAP aplicada em atletas de endurance, de forma a minimizar transtornos gastrointestinais.ABSTRACT FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols) are short-chain carbohydrates, poorly absorbed in the small intestine and highly fermentable by the intestinal microbiota. The Low FODMAP Diet, a diet consisting of foods low in FODMAPs, consists of a type of diet that aims to alleviate the symptoms of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This pathology can be clinically controlled through nutritional guidelines, as well as through lifestyle changes. Foods with a high FODMAP content can promote the osmotic translocation of water and the production of gases, contributing to gastrointestinal symptoms such as cramps, bloating and diarrhea. These symptoms are similar to the gastrointestinal disorders often seen in endurance athletes, impairing their sporting performance. Therefore, the aim of this review was to analyze the possible effects of a Low FODMAP Diet applied to endurance athletes, in order to minimize gastrointestinal disorders.

  • DIETARY AND NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION IN COLONIC DIVERTICULOSIS

When symptomatic it is designated diverticular disease, which is subdivided into symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease, acute or chronic diverticulitis (uncomplicated or complicated), diverticular bleeding and segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis. Up to date, several modifiable factors have already been described that influence the development and treatment of this conditions, particularly the diet adopted by the individual. This thematic review intends to describe and analyze the influence of certain nutritional and dietary options in both prevention and treatment of diverticulosis and diverticular disease. Meta-analysis, systematic reviews, thematic reviews, guidelines, and original articles published from 2013 to 2023 and available in the PubMed and Scopus databases were used. Based on the literature review, we found that obesity and alcohol intake are risk factors for diverticulosis. A higher intake of fiber and vitamin D may reduce the risk of diverticular disease, unlike alcohol intake. No association was found with caffeine. The relationship with fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols still needs further investigation. Regarding food, the consumption of nuts, seeds, and corn appears to decrease the risk of diverticular disease. On the other hand, the consumption red meat seems to play a negative role. Regarding the treatment, the recommended intake of fiber is different accordingly to the subtype of diverticular disease. Artificial nutrition may contribute for a better prognostic.

  • OXIDATIVE STRESS AND INFERTILITY: A REVIEW

Neste sentido, a partir da presente revisão, torna-se possível afirmar que o stress oxidativo desempenha um papel importante na infertilidade feminina e masculina, constituindo implicações claras para a prevenção, diagnóstico e resolução terapêutica de tais condições.ABSTRACT Infertility is a male and/or female reproductive system disease, defined by the inability to achieve pregnancy after more than 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse. The etiology may be associated with modern lifestyle or metabolic changes, such as increasing maternal age, obesity, diabetes, anxiety, alcohol consumption, smoking and exposure to environmental pollutants, including those that act as endocrine disruptors. A common factor in these conditions is the overproduction of reactive oxygen species that may lead to oxidative stress. Thus, the aim of the present literature review is to study whether there is an association between oxidative stress and the incidence of infertility. A literature search was carried in Pubmed database between February and April 2023. Were used the key words: ¨oxidative stress¨, ¨fertility¨. ¨infertility¨, ¨female infertility¨ and ¨male infertility¨. Regarding to the reproductive system, oxidative stress can affect the quality of gametes, oocytes, sperm, embryos and their environments. Additionally, it affects early embryonic development and implantation, which in turn affects pregnancy rate. Moreover, it has been negatively associated to ovarian stimulation, thus, on potential oocyte development in in vitro fertilization. Therefore, from the present review work it is possible to state that oxidative stress plays an important role in female and male infertility, constituting clear implications for the prevention, diagnosis and therapeutic resolution of such conditions.
