  • Nutmeg - Origin, diversity, distribution and history

    • Authors: B. Sasikumar
      Pages: 131 - 141
Abstract: Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) a small holder’s crop, with 3500 years of antiquity originated in the Moluccas, Indonesia, is now grown in about 12 countries including some secondary centres of domestication. Centres of domestication overlap the centre of origin in nutmeg. Out of about 175 species in the genus, only five are economically important. Besides species diversity and cultivar diversity, ecosystem diversity is also a component of biodiversity of the genus. The genus is represented by six species including four endemic species and subspecies each in India. A comprehensive work on Indian Myristica is pertinent. The history of the spice is mired in bloody wars, piracies, privateers, clandestine collection trips, wanton felling of the heirloom trees besides inadvertent specimen identity, inaccurate chronology and a treaty of land swap. Though French and British colonial rulers took interest in popularising nutmeg in their colonies albeit for economic gains, the role of French was pivotal. The package of practices of nutmeg (Colonial Horticulture) in the new French colonies were a complex process of creolizing the expertise borrowed from the native people of the Moluccas with the horticultural knowledge of the colonists, traders, settlers, slaves and other local residents. Though nutmeg, a perennial tree of about 100 years of life span, has only about 300 years of domestication history in the country, the cultivar diversity is amazing as exemplified by the high frequency of farmer’s varieties. The nutmeg population of the country also exhibits good phenotypic plasticity as demonstrated by leaky dioecy. While the transnational spread of nutmeg is a legacy of colonial rulers, the settlers mainly Christians, are credited with the intrastate spread of nutmeg in Kerala, the major area of production in India. History of nutmeg is still in an emerging phase and there are gaps in our understanding.

  • Domestic quarantine: An introspection and future perspectives on
biosecurity interventions to contain pathogen spread in vegetatively
           propagated spices in India

    • Authors: C. N. Biju, A. Jeevalatha, A. I. Bhat, M. F. Peeran, R. Praveena, C. Sarathambal , S. J. Eapen
      Pages: 142 - 162
Abstract: Safeguarding biodiversity poses a major challenge that warrants preventive legislative and regulatory frameworks to ensure biosecurity, preserve intrinsic biodiversity and mitigate risks from the invasion of exotic pathogenic microbes thereby sustaining agricultural productivity and food safety. The anthropogenic activities contribute enormously towards transboundary movement of invasive alien pathogens through trade and transport of seeds/propagation materials that need to be regulated by enacting appropriate laws and policy guidelines. Black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric and vanilla are the major vegetatively propagated spices cultivated in India. Since primary spread of the major pathogens in these spices are mediated through planting materials, it is imperative to formulate guidelines for flawless and meticulous implementation of quarantine measures which are otherwise not adopted. This review discusses the significance of domestic quarantine in major vegetatively propagated spices with a comprehensive background on plant biosecurity and invasive plant pathogens which could pose threat to spice cultivation in India. It further illustrates the constraints and possible strategies to annihilate the cryptically disseminated pathogens through vegetative planting materials ultimately to safeguard our self-sustaining agricultural systems.

  • Variability in yield parameters of onion genotypes in Bundelkhand region
           of Uttar Pradesh

    • Authors: R. K. Singh, Mritunjay Rai, A. C. Mishra, S. V. Dwivedi
      Pages: 175 - 182
Abstract: Of the seventeen onion varieties evaluated for assessment of variability in mean performance, variances, heritability and genetic advance, (L-883 and Bhima Shweta) were most promising genotypes in respect of gross and marketable bulb yield, minimum number of bolters, rotten and multi-centred bulbs, bulb weight, equatorial bulb diameter, total soluble solids, number of leaves per plant and earliness in maturity. High values of genetic and phenotypic for gross and marketable bulb yield, average bulb weight, days to 70% neck fall and plant height indicated more opportunity of selection for these traits. High genetic advance as percentage of mean coupled with high heritability was observed for gross and marketable bulb yield and average bulb weight. Therefore, significant improvement could be expected through selection for these traits.

Curcuma caesia rhizome by GC-MS and comparing their bioactivities

    • Authors: Rameshor S. Atom, Shaukat Ali M. Shaikh, Warjeet S. Laitonjam, Raghumani S. Ninghthoujam, Amit Kunwar
      Pages: 183 - 195
Abstract: The objective of this study was to characterise the putative phytochemical constituents from petroleum ether (CC-P) and chloroform (CC-C) extracts of Curcuma. caesia rhizome by GC-MS analysis and to compare their bioactivities. GC-MS analysis facilitated the documentation of a total of 16 and 20 volatile constituents in CC-P and CC-C extracts respectively. Of these the major constituents present in CC-P were cycloisolongifolence, 8, 9-dehydro-9 formyl- (19.64%), 4-oxo- β-isodamascol (16.05%), 6,10-dimethyl-3- (1-methylethyl) -6-cyclodecene-1,4-dione (13.80%), 2H-cyclohepta[b]furan-2-one,6-[1-(acetyloxy) -3-oxobutyl]- 3,3a,4,7,8,8a- hexahydro-7-methyl- 3-methylene- (9.08%), tricycle [5.1.0.0(2,4)] oct-5-ene-5-propanoic acid,3,3,8.8-tetramethyl- (6.39%), 2(3H)-benzofuranone,6-ethenylhexahydro-3,6-dimethyl-7-(1- methyl ethenyl)-, [3S-(3α,3aα,6α,7β,7aβ) (4.18%) and 7a-isopropenyl-4,5-dimethy loctahydroindene-4-carboxylic acid (4.01%). Similarly, the major constituents present in CC-C were cycloisolongifolence,8,9- dehydro-9-formyl-(15.69%), 6,10-dimethyl-3-(1-methylethyl)-6-cyclodecene-1, 4-dione (13.38%), 2H-cyclohepta [b]furan-2-one,6-[1- (acetyloxy)-3-oxobutyl] -3,3a,4,7,8,8a- hexa hydro -7-methyl - 3-methylene- (4.55%), tricycle [5.1.0.0(2,4)] oct-5-ene-5- propanoic acid,3,3,8.8-tetramethyl- (7.50%), 2(3H)-benzofuranone, 6-ethenylhexahydro-3,6-dimethyl-7-(1-methylethenyl)-,[3S- (3α,3aα,6α,7β,7aβ) (6.15%), 7a-isopropenyl-4,5-dimethyl octahydroindene-4-carboxylic acid (6.43%) and 2-(4a,8- Dimethyl-6- oxo-1,2,3,4-4a,5,6,8a-octahydro-naphthalen-2-yl) propionaldehyde (6.57%). The extracts, CC-P and CC-C exhibited almost similar antibacterial and antifungal potentials but differed with respect to antioxidant activity. The IC50 values of CC-P and CC-C extracts for DPPH scavenging were 0.68±0.02 mg ml-1 and 0.13±0.01 mg ml-1 respectively. Together, above results provide an important basis for the isolation of bioactive compounds from C. caesia rhizome extract and their use as traditional medicine.

  • Response of black pepper varieties for propagation by serpentine layering

    • Authors: Adarsh Thapa, S. Datta, U. Rai
      Pages: 196 - 199
Abstract: In the present study response of light black pepper verities for propagation through serpentine layering was studied. Verities showed significant variations with respect to growth attributing parameters, survivability and numbers of layers per year. Maximum survivability (93.00 % and 88.33 %) at 30 and 90 days after cutting was found in Panniyur-1. Maximum planting material production per year was achieved in Panniyur-1 (51.17) which was higher than the rest of the varieties but was statistically at par with Panniyur-2 (50.50) and Pournami (50.17). These three varieties may be considered for higher production of planting materials through serpentine layering method.

    • Authors: Nagarajappa Adivappar, M. K. Naik
      Pages: 200 - 203
Abstract: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc) is cultivated in different agro-climatic zones of Karnataka. Correction of deficiency of nutrients through foliar application of micronutrients is imperative to maintain the growth and development of the crop. Hence, large scale demonstrations were conducted and the impact analysis of crop specific ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode-micronutrient formulation (released as “Ginger Special”) on productivity and profitability of ginger in Southern Transitional Zone of Karnataka was carried out during 2016- 19 by involving 429 farmers in an area of 133.20 ha. Foliar application of ginger special (5 gl-1), 45 days after planting up to six months at an interval of 45 days showed significant increase in fresh yield (23.94 t ha-1), higher returns ha-1 (Rs.9,80,300) and higher BCR (2.89). The test farmers who used ginger special obtained a mean additional fresh yield (2.44 t ha-1), additional return (Rs. 99,500 ha-1) besides providing additional employment to the farm workers (12 ha-1). Use of ginger special, created a good impact on productivity and profitability of ginger cultivation and the technology has spread in an area of 500 ha in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

  • Influence of propagules and growth regulators on the performance of
underutilized spice - Spiny coriander (Eryngium foetidum L.)

    • Authors: Abdus Samad, B. Singh, P. R. Gajurel
      Pages: 204 - 209
Abstract: An experiment was conducted to study the effect of propagules of spiny coriander (Eryngium foetidum L) as influenced by growth regulators in the Forestry Nursery of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology during 2018 and 2019. Spiny coriander is an underutilized culinary spice; a medicinal and aromatic plant that belongs to the family Apiaceae. The study consisted of 14 treatments involving two levels of propagules like stem cuttings (S1) and suckers (S2) and seven levels of growth regulators namely Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) and Indole-3 Acetic Acid (IAA) [each at 0, 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm]. The results indicated that the treatment T9 involving sucker (S2 + IBA 500 ppm) was found better in terms of growth and it was comparable with T12 (S2 + IAA 500 ppm) during both years. Suckers treated with IBA 500 ppm and IAA 500 ppm showed significantly superior performance over the stem cuttings. It is concluded that suckers (7-10 cm) of Eryngium foetidum may be used as propagating material for commercial cultivation, as it is an easy, quick and economical method of propagation.
