  • Dietary Modulations in Preventing Cardiometabolic Risk in Individuals with
           Type 2 Diabetes

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex health issue include obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and chronic inflammation that increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CVDs are of great concern in the disease progression and prognosis of T2DM. This review is a comprehensive examination of the literature on the relationship between T2DM and cardiovascular risk, nutrition-related cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors, and impact of dietary modulations on CMR. Recent Findings In recent years the researches has been focus on the importance of a comprehensive treatment approach like dietary modulations to address multiple cardiovascular risk reductions, including hypertension and dyslipidemia. Modulation of dietary patterns are the most promising interventions to prevent CMR factors and T2DM via affecting the body weight, glucose control, and microbial diversity of individuals. Current evidence suggests that high-quality dietary patterns such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan and the Mediterranean diet is important in the metabolic control processes of T2DM with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, glucagon-like peptide agonist compounds, and intestinal microbiota changes. Summary Nutrition plays a critical role in preventing and improving CVD outcomes in patients with T2DM. Dietary modulations should be planned considering individual differences in responses to dietary composition and nutritional changes, personal preferences, eating behaviors and gut microbiota differences.

  • The Impact of Red Beetroot Products on Glycemic Profiles: A Systematic
           Review of Human Evidence

      Abstract: Purpose of review Low-glycemic diets are crucial, particularly for individuals with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Therefore, observing the impact of multiple forms of red beetroot-based products on the glycemic profiles of humans under various health conditions has arguably become significant due to beetroot's high fiber content, antioxidants, inorganic nitrates, etc., which this review aims to summarize. Recent findings The relevant articles published between 2000 and 2022 were obtained from PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect by following the PRISMA-P 2020 statement. This systematic review included 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one non-randomized clinical trial (non-RCT), and one quasi-experimental (QE) study, and they covered different health conditions, e.g., type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, hypertension, etc. The studies produced conflicting results, likely due to differences in the study design, dosage, duration, and population. The risk of bias in most of the RCTs and QE studies included in the review was assessed as low or moderate, and only one non-RCT was assessed as having a high risk of bias. Summary Red beetroot may help maintain the blood sugar levels of humans under different health conditions. However, the existing results on beetroot's potential for glycemic management are unclear due to varied outcomes across studies. Further intervention studies with standardized protocols and diverse participant groups are necessary to assess the role of beetroot products in regulating blood sugar levels before making a definitive judgment.

  • Harnessing Plant Flavonoids to Fight Pancreatic Cancer

      Abstract: Purpose of Review This review draws on the last fifteen years (2009–2024) of published data to summarize the potential effect of plant flavonoids on pancreatic carcinogenesis and discuss the possible mechanisms of action to establish their applicability as anti-cancer agents. Recent Findings This review found that the plant flavonoids with anti-pancreatic cancer activity mainly include chalcones, dihydrochalcones, flavanols, flavanones, flavones, isoflavonoids, flavonols, isoflavones, and flavanonols. Most of these flavonoids have anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, cell cycle arrest, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and anti-metastatic properties. Some flavonoids can also regulate autophagy, immune and glucose uptake in the context of pancreatic cancer. Several molecules and signaling pathways are associated with the pharmacological activities of plant flavonoids, including AMP-activated protein kinase, mitogen-activated protein kinases, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B, nuclear factor-κB, signal transducer, and activator of transcription 3, Smad3, epidermal growth factor receptor, and vascular endothelial growth factor. Summary This review provides strong evidence that plant flavonoids have potential against pancreatic carcinogenesis in experimental animals through various pharmacological mechanisms. They are a promising resource for use as adjuvant anti-cancer therapy. However, randomized controlled clinical trials with those flavonoids are needed.

  • Cholesterol and Immune Microenvironment: Path Towards Tumorigenesis

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Since obesity is a major risk factor for many different types of cancer, examining one of the most closely associated comorbidities, such as hypercholesterolemia, is crucial to understanding how obesity causes cancer. Hypercholesterolemia is usually associated with many cardiovascular complications such as hypertension, angina, and atherosclerosis. In addition, cholesterol may be a major factor in increasing cancer risk. Cancer patients who received statins, an anti-hypercholesteremic medicine, demonstrated improved prognosis possibly through its effect on tumor proliferation, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. Cholesterol could also aid in tumor progression through reprogramming tumor immunological architecture and mediators. This review focuses on the immunomodulatory role of cholesterol on cellular and molecular levels, which may explain its oncogenic driving activity. We look at how cholesterol modulates tumor immune cells like dendritic cells, T cells, Tregs, and neutrophils. Further, this study sheds light on the modification of the expression pattern of the common cancer-related immune mediators in the tumor immune microenvironment, such as programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), interleukin 12 (IL-12), IL-23, and forkhead box protein P3 (FOXP3). Recent Findings We highlight relevant literature demonstrating cholesterol's immunosuppressive role, leading to a worse cancer prognosis. This review invites further research regarding the pathobiological role of cholesterol in many obesity-related cancers such as uterine fibroids, post-menopausal breast, colorectal, endometrial, kidney, esophageal, pancreatic, liver, and gallbladder cancers. Summary This review suggests that targeting cholesterol synthesis may be a fruitful approach to cancer targeting, in addition to traditional chemotherapeutics. Graphical abstract

  • Optimizing Intravenous Access for Long-Term Parenteral Nutrition

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Securing safe and effective intravenous (IV) access is of utmost importance for administering parenteral nutrition (PN). Sustaining this access can indeed pose challenges, especially when dealing with the risk of complications associated with long-term PN. This review emphasizes best practices to optimize intravenous access and reviews the current evidence-based recommendations and consensus guidelines. Recent Findings An individualized approach when selecting central venous catheters (CVC) is recommended, considering the estimated duration of need for IV access and the number of lumens needed. Established and novel approaches to minimize complications, including infection and thrombosis, are recognized. These include placement and positioning of the catheter tip under sonographic guidance and the use of antimicrobial lock therapies. Moreover, when possible, salvaging CVCs can reduce the risk of vascular access loss. Summary CVC selection for patients requiring PN depends on several factors. Carefully reviewing an individual patient’s clinical characteristics and discussing options is important. Given the increased infection risk, CVC lumens should be minimized. For long-term PN beyond 6 months, using CVCs with skin barriers and larger diameters should be considered.

  • Dietary Modification Combined with Nutrition Education and Counseling for
           Metabolic Comorbidities in Multiple Sclerosis: Implications for Clinical
           Practice and Research

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Metabolic comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are common to multiple sclerosis (MS) and are associated with negative outcomes of the disease. Dietary intervention has the potential to improve MS co-morbidities; thus, it is a high priority for people living with MS to self-manage their disease. The present review aimed to summarize the recent evidence on the impacts of combining dietary modification with nutrition education and counseling on managing metabolic comorbidity markers in MS. Recent Findings Evidence suggests important roles for tailored dietary change strategies and nutrition education and counseling in managing metabolic comorbidities for MS. There is also indirect evidence suggesting a relationship between dietary fiber, the gut microbiome, and improved metabolic markers in MS, highlighting the need for more research in this area. For people living with MS, addressing both barriers and facilitators to dietary changes through behavior change techniques can help them achieve sustainable and tailored dietary behavior changes. This will support person-centered care, ultimately improving metabolic comorbidity outcomes. Summary Metabolic comorbidities in MS are considered modifiable diseases that can be prevented and managed by changes in dietary behavior. However, the impact of targeted dietary interventions on mitigating MS-related metabolic comorbidities remains inadequately explored. Therefore, this review has provided insights into recommendations to inform future best practices in MS. Further well-designed studies based on tailored dietary strategies applying behavior change theories are needed to address the underlying determinants of dietary practice in this population.

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Global health concerns persist in the realm of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), necessitating innovative strategies for both prevention and treatment. This narrative review aims to explore the potential of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—namely, acetate, propionate, and butyrate—as agents in the realm of postbiotics for the management of CVDs. Recent Findings We commence our discussion by elucidating the concept of postbiotics and their pivotal significance in mitigating various aspects of cardiovascular diseases. This review centers on a comprehensive examination of diverse SCFAs and their associated receptors, notably GPR41, GPR43, and GPR109a. In addition, we delve into the intricate cellular and pharmacological mechanisms through which these receptors operate, providing insights into their specific roles in managing cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart failure, and stroke. Summary The integration of current information in our analysis highlights the potential of both SCFAs and their receptors as a promising path for innovative therapeutic approaches in the field of cardiovascular health. The idea of postbiotics arises as an optimistic and inventive method, presenting new opportunities for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases.

  • Modulation of Gut Microbiota Through Dietary Intervention in
           Neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases

      Abstract: Purpose of Review The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. One of the main modulators of the gut microbiota is the diet, which directly influences host homeostasis and biological processes. Some dietary patterns can affect neurodegenerative diseases’ progression through gut microbiota composition, gut permeability, and the synthesis and secretion of microbial-derived neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitters. This comprehensive review critically assesses existing studies investigating the impact of dietary interventions on the modulation of the microbiota in relation to neurodegenerative diseases and neuroinflammation. Recent Findings There are limited studies on the effects of specific diets, such as the ketogenic diet, Mediterranean diet, vegetarian diet, and Western diet, on the progression of neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases through the gut-brain axis. The ketogenic diet displays promising potential in ameliorating the clinical trajectory of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. However, conflicting outcomes were observed among various studies, highlighting the need to consider diverse types of ketogenic diets and their respective effects on clinical outcomes and gut microbiota composition. Vegetarian and Mediterranean diets, known for their anti-inflammatory properties, can be effective against Parkinson’s disease, which is related to inflammation in the gut environment. On the other hand, the westernization of dietary patterns was associated with reduced gut microbial diversity and metabolites, which ultimately contributed to the development of neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment. Summary Various studies examining the impact of dietary interventions on the gut-brain axis with regard to neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases are thoroughly reviewed in this article. A strong mechanistic explanation is required to fully understand the complex interactions between various dietary patterns, gut microbiota, and microbial metabolites and the effects these interactions have on cognitive function and the progression of these diseases.

  • Review of Diet Quality Indices that can be Applied to the Environmental
           Assessment of Foods and Diets

      Abstract: Purpose of Review The aim was to identify indices of diet quality and health that could be applied to the environmental assessment of foods in order to provide metrics that collectively assess nutritional, health and environmental dimensions. Recent Findings The review identified five major groups of indices: nutrient-food quantity-based; guideline-based; diversity-based; nutrient quality-based; health-based. Nutrient-food quantity-based and guideline type indices were the most frequently used to evaluate diet quality. Scaled assessment using a nutritional functional unit is the most common integration of diet quality with the environmental analysis of foods. There are fewer indices that measure the heath impacts of foods, but epidemiological dietary risk factors seem a promising approach to integrate diet and health impacts into the environmental assessment of foods. Summary Five groups of nutritional and health indices were identified that can be applied when performing an environmental assessment of foods. This review proposes different methodological insights when doing such assessments to ensure transparency and comparability of the results.

  • It’s About Timing: Contrasting the Metabolic Effects of Early vs. Late
           Time-Restricted Eating in Humans

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Time-restricted eating (TRE), a form of intermittent fasting, restricts feeding time across the day, imposing a daily ‘eating window’. The time of day when the eating window occurs could result in differential metabolic effects. Here, we describe recent intervention studies in humans assessing the metabolic consequences of an early- (i.e., eating window starting in the early morning) vs. late (i.e., eating window starting after midday)-TRE protocol. Recent Findings Well-controlled studies indicate that both TRE protocols effectively reduce body weight and improve altered glucose metabolism, lipid profile, inflammation, or blood pressure levels. An early-TRE (e-TRE) might have a further positive impact on improving blood glucose, insulin levels, and insulin resistance. However, the studies directly assessing the metabolic consequences of an early- vs. late-TRE have shown dissimilar findings, and more well-controlled clinical trials are needed on the metabolic benefits of these two types of TRE. Summary Evidence suggests that an e-TRE might have enhanced metabolic results, particularly regarding glucose homeostasis. More long-term studies, including larger sample sizes, are needed to assess the metabolic, circadian, and adherence benefits, together with socio-cultural acceptance of both TRE approaches.

  • Sweet Surprises: An In-depth Systematic Review of Artificial Sweeteners
           and Their Association with Cerebrovascular Accidents

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Artificial sweeteners have become increasingly popular in today’s dietary trends as a healthier and sweeter alternative to sugar. As studies emerge regarding artificial sweeteners, concerns are arising about their side effects, particularly linking them to strokes. This systematic review aims to assess the relationship between artificial sweeteners (AS) and cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs). A systematic search of studies indexed in PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted using the keywords “ASB” (artificially sweetened beverage), “Artificial Sweeteners,” “Stroke,” etc. These studies were screened and filtered according to our exclusion criteria. We reviewed 55 studies published in various journals and further boiled down to finalizing 12 studies for analysis using the PRISMA Statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020. Recent Findings Most studies suggest that there is a positive association between artificial sweetener consumption and CVAs including all types of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes. Poorer outcomes are seen with higher ASB intake. Increased risk is notable among women and black populations. Some studies show no association between ASB consumption and hemorrhagic stroke, however, most suggest a strong link. Summary The current literature shows a degree of variation so it is crucial to consider possible confounders and eliminate them in future studies. Further research is necessary to determine the underlying mechanisms, especially in individuals with comorbidities. The results obtained play a role in forming dietary guidelines and alarming the public about the possible health implications, prompting caution regarding excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners, in their daily lives.

  • Production of Toxins by the Gut Microbiota: The Role of Dietary Protein

      Abstract: Purpose of Review This narrative review will discuss how the intake of specific protein sources (animal and vegetable) providing specific amino acids can modulate the gut microbiota composition and generate toxins. A better understanding of these interactions could lead to more appropriate dietary recommendations to improve gut health and mitigate the risk of complications promoted by the toxic metabolites formed by the gut microbiota. Recent Findings Gut microbiota is vital in maintaining human health by influencing immune function and key metabolic pathways. Under unfavorable conditions, the gut microbiota can produce excess toxins, which contribute to inflammation and the breakdown of the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Genetic and environmental factors influence gut microbiota diversity, with diet playing a crucial role. Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota significantly metabolizes amino acids from dietary proteins, producing various metabolites with beneficial and harmful effects. Summary Amino acids such as choline, betaine, l-carnitine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan can increase the production of uremic toxins when metabolized by intestinal bacteria. The type of food source that provides these amino acids affects the production of toxins. Plant-based diets and dietary fiber are associated with lower toxin formation than animal-based diets due to the high amino acid precursors in animal proteins.

  • “Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever'” A Review of Nutritional Strategies in
           the Setting of Bacterial Versus Viral Infections

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Some data, mostly originally derived from animal studies, suggest that low glucose intake is protective in bacterial sepsis but detrimental in overwhelming viral infections. This has been interpreted into a broad belief that different forms of sepsis may potentially require different nutritional management strategies. There are a few mechanistic differences between the host interactions with virus and bacteria which can explain why there may be opposing responses to macronutrient and micronutrient during the infected state. Here, we aim to review relevant evidence on the mechanisms and pathophysiology of nutritional management strategies in various infectious syndromes and summarize their clinical implications. Recent Findings Newer literature — in the context of the SARS-CoV-19 pandemic — offers some insight to viral infections. There is still limited clinically applicable data during infection that clearly delineate the role of nutrition during an active viral vs bacterial infections. Summary Based on contrasting findings in different models of viruses and bacteria, the macronutrient and micronutrient needs may depend more on specific infectious organisms that may not be generalizable as bacterial versus viral. Overall, the metabolic effects of sepsis are context dependent, and various host-specific (e.g., age, baseline nutritional status, immune status, comorbidities) and illness variables (phase, duration, and severity of illness) play a significant role in determining the outcome besides pathogen-specific (virus or bacterial or fungi and combined infections) factors. Microbe therapy (probiotics and prebiotics) seems to have therapeutic potential in both viral and bacterial infected states, and this seems like a promising area for further practical research.

  • Dietary Polyphenols: What is the Estimated Intake in Population Studies
           With Adults and Elderly People'

      Abstract: Estimates of dietary intake of polyphenols have been limited to specific samples from certain population groups, and different databases have been used to quantify the levels of these compounds, which makes it difficult to compare results. Purpose of Review This review collated estimates of polyphenol intake from population studies including adults and elderly from different parts of the world by using a single database: Phenol-Explorer. Recent Findings Through seven population-based studies performed in five different countries, it was possible to identify that Brazil was the country with the lowest intake of polyphenols, whereas Poland had the highest dietary intake. The most ingested subclasses of polyphenols in different countries were phenolic acids and flavonoids, and non-alcoholic beverages (coffee, tea, and orange juice) were the foods that most contributed to the intake of polyphenols. Summary Despite the attempt to standardize this study to obtain worldwide intake estimates that could be comparable, gaps were found regarding the assessment of food consumption, standardization to obtain the polyphenol content of foods in Phenol-Explorer, calculation in aglycone equivalents, and caloric adjustment of the estimates. There is a need for more studies on the dietary polyphenols intake of representative samples of populations from different countries to collate more data on the quantities consumed and the main contributing foods.

  • Risk of Bone Fracture on Vegetarian and Vegan Diets

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Bone fractures can have a devastating effect on health, especially in the elderly, undermining their independence for daily activities, and increasing the risk of comorbidities and mortality. Nutrition is a key factor in maintaining an optimal bone health across the lifespan. The number of people that choose to avoid meat or even all animal products is increasing globally, for a diversity of reasons. Properly planned vegetarian and vegan diets are widely recognized as a healthy dietary pattern, but the long-term impact of these diets on bone health and more specifically risk of bone fractures is less clear. Classic studies have observed a slightly lower bone mineral density in vegetarians but have many limitations, including inadequate adjusting for relevant confounding factors, and cross-sectional design. The aim of this review is to summarize and put into context the current evidence on the effect of vegetarian and vegan diets on bone health, with a focus on fracture risk. Recent Findings In recent years, results from many large prospective studies have emerged, which allowed us to assess the risk of incident bone fractures in vegetarians. In these studies, vegetarian and especially vegan diets were associated with an increased risk of bone fractures. Summary In many recent prospective cohort studies, vegetarian and especially vegan diets were associated with an increased risk of bone fractures. At least part of this risk could be due to a lower body mass index and a lower intake of nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and protein. Some evidence suggests that combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation and other factors such as consumption of protein-rich foods may attenuate this risk. The eventual deleterious effect of vegetarian diets on bone health should be contextualized and balanced with its benefits, such as lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

  • Obesity and Obesity-Related Thyroid Dysfunction: Any Potential Role for
           the Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD)'

      Abstract: Purpose of Review This review aims to explore in-depth the different aspects of the association between very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD), obesity and obesity-related thyroid dysfunction. Recent Findings The VLCKD, proposed as a non-pharmacological strategy for the management of certain chronic diseases, is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Initially used to treat epilepsy, it has been shown to be effective in controlling body weight gain and addressing various pathophysiological conditions. Research has shown that a low-calorie, high-fat diet can affect thyroid hormone levels. Weight loss can also influence thyroid hormone levels. Studies have suggested that long-term use of VLCKD for refractory epilepsy may be related to the development of hypothyroidism, with an effect seen in various populations. In particular, women with obesity following VLCKD tend to have reduced T3 levels. Summary We propose further research to unravel the underlying mechanisms linking VLCKD to obesity and obesity-related thyroid dysfunction.

By integrating recent epidemiological data, we aim to provide a nuanced understanding of how obesity exacerbates T2DM through gut flora alterations. Recent Findings Advances in research have underscored the significance of bioactive ingredients in natural foods, capable of restoring gut microbiota balance, thus offering a promising approach to manage diabetes in the context of obesity. These findings build upon the traditional use of medicinal plants in diabetes treatment, suggesting a deeper exploration of their mechanisms of action. Summary This comprehensive manuscript underscores the critical role of targeting gut microbiota dysbiosis in obesity-related T2DM management and by bridging traditional knowledge with current scientific evidence; we highlighted the need for continued research into natural products as a complementary strategy for comprehensive diabetes care.

  • Aging Processes Are Affected by Energy Balance: Focused on the Effects of
           Nutrition and Physical Activity on Telomere Length

      Abstract: Purpose of Review The number and proportion of individuals aged 60 and over are increasing globally. The increase in the elderly population has important social and economic effects. Telomere length is an important marker for healthy aging. Here, we review the relevance between telomere length and energy balance by determining the effects of physical activity, nutrients, dietary patterns, and foods on healthy aging and telomere length with related studies. Recent Findings Evidence emphasizes the importance of telomere length and integrity for healthy aging. It also focuses on the importance of potential interventions such as physical activity and a healthy diet to improve this process. Summary We suggest that ensuring energy balance with regular physical activity and healthy diets can contribute to the aging process by protecting telomere length. In addition, different methods in studies, short and inconsistent durations, different types of exercise, different diet patterns, and non-standard foods have led to conflicting results. More studies are needed to elucidate molecular-based mechanisms.

  • The Crucial Roles of Diet, Microbiota, and Postbiotics in Colorectal
           Cancer

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the world, and its prevalence has been increasing alarmingly in recent years. After researchers discovered the existence of dysbiosis in colorectal cancer, they considered the use of probiotics in the treatment of colorectal cancer. However, for various reasons, including the low safety profile of probiotics in susceptible and immunocompromised patient5s, and the risk of developing antibiotic resistance, researchers have shifted their focus to non-living cells, their components, and metabolites. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the literature on the effects of diet, microbiota, and postbiotics on colorectal cancer and the future of postbiotics. Recent Findings The link between diet, gut microbiota, and colorectal cancer has been established primarily as a relationship rather than a cause-effect relationship. The gut microbiota can convert gastrointestinal tract and dietary factors into either onco-metabolites or tumor suppressor metabolites. There is serious dysbiosis in the microbiota in colorectal cancer. Postbiotics appear to be promising agents in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer. Summary It has been shown that various postbiotics can selectively induce apoptosis in CRC, inhibit cell proliferation, growth, invasion, and migration, modulate the immune system, suppress carcinogenic signaling pathways, maintain intestinal epithelial integrity, and have a synergistic effect with chemotherapy drugs. However, it is also reported that some postbiotics are ineffective and may be risky in terms of safety profile in some patients. Many issues need to be researched about postbiotics. Large-scale, randomized, double-blind clinical studies are needed.

  • An Updated View of the Effect of Probiotic Supplement on Sports
           Performance: A Detailed Review

      Abstract: Purpose of Review Modulation of the host microbiota through probiotics has been shown to have beneficial effects on health in the growing body of research. Exercise increases the amount and diversity of beneficial microorganisms in the host microbiome. Although low- and moderate-intensity exercise has been shown to reduce physiological stress and improve immune function, high-intensity prolonged exercise can suppress immune function and reduce microbial diversity due to intestinal hypoperfusion. The effect of probiotic supplementation on sports performance is still being studied; however, questions remain regarding the mechanisms of action, strain used, and dose. In this review, the aim was to investigate the effects of probiotic supplements on exercise performance through modulation of gut microbiota and alleviation of GI symptoms, promotion of the immune system, bioavailability of nutrients, and aerobic metabolism. Recent Findings Probiotic supplementation may improve sports performance by reducing the adverse effects of prolonged high-intensity exercise. Summary Although probiotics have been reported to have positive effects on sports performance, information about the microbiome and nutrition of athletes has not been considered in most current studies. This may have limited the evaluation of the effects of probiotic supplementation on sports performance.
