Abstract: President of the Society of Biblical Literature 2021Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature20 November 2021San Antonio, TexasIntroduction given by Adela Yarbro Collins Vice President, Society of Biblical Literature https://doi.org/10.15699/jbl.1411.2022.1a.It is my great pleasure to introduce Jim VanderKam, a longtime friend and colleague. His roots are in the Christian Reformed Church: his father was the pastor of churches in Michigan and Iowa, and his mother led women’s groups in those churches. His father came to the United States from the Netherlands when he was a boy. Jim was born in Cadillac, Michigan, a town originally named Kautawabet, after a Potawatamie chief. A lumber baron renamed the town ... Read More

  • R. H. Charles and Modern Biblical Studies

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: After retiring and finishing the Hermeneia commentary on the Book of Jubilees, I researched and wrote a biography of R. H. Charles, a pioneer in the field of early Jewish apocalypses and other pseudepigrapha.1 Charles had always been one of my academic heroes and remains so today. I wanted to know more about this man, whose publications had proved so fundamental in the study of early Judaism and whose name kept showing up in the footnotes of scholars in the field and in my own. His work simply could not be ignored, even a century after his time. I developed a mental image of Charles as a large, genial man who edited the famous two-volume set through which many of us had been introduced to early Jewish texts, The ... Read More

  • Reading the Blood Plague (Exodus 7: 14–25): The Hermeneutics of a
           Composite Text

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This essay aims to rethink the presuppositions about compositional practices with respect to the assembly and production of what has come to be called the Pentateuch. In particular, the essay reflects on the historical composition of Exod 7:14–25 in the context of the exodus narrative, in order to reconstruct a reading practice that we suggest is appropriate to the complex compositional nature of this text. Thus, in this article we are not trying to identify the historical layers of the text, that is, “P” and “non-P,”1 nor is the goal to reconstruct the earliest part of the text. Nevertheless, history and composition provide the focus. Reading Exod 7:14– 25 triggers a practice of exegesis that can overcome the ... Read More

  • Writing as a Source of Ritual Authority: The High Priest’s Body as a
Priestly Text in the Tabernacle-Building Story

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The story of the building of the tabernacle in Exodus details the design of YHWH’s mobile shrine and the objects that are to be permanent parts of its ritual apparatus. The P portion of this narrative includes YHWH’s instructions for the building of the shrine and the things in it (chs. 25–31).1 This is followed by a description of the construction (chs. 35–40).2 Exodus 28 narrates YHWH’s instructions to Moses and includes three sets of ritual texts that are to be set into Aaron’s uniform: a shoulder piece, a chest piece, and an inscribed headdress. The inscriptions are then crafted in Exod 39 in accordance with these instructions.3 In this study, I argue that this narrative merges iconic aspects of diverse ... Read More

  • Humor in the Midst of Tragedy: The Comic Vision of 1 Samuel 4–6

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Two peanuts were walking down the street, and one was a salted.Late night comedian Stephen Colbert once described the above as a perfect joke.1 It starts, he says, with a funny premise: two inanimate objects walking. They happen also to be peanuts, a word that has the capacity for silly and crass humor as well. Then the story takes a dark, violent turn, and, he says, much comedy comes out of darkness. That dark turn is immediately alleviated by the recognition that instead of reference to actual violence the joke is using a simple wordplay. The question of what makes something funny is, it turns out, a serious question and not necessarily an easy one to answer. There are numerous theories of humor available.2 For ... Read More

  • Sex Scandal and the Politics of David’s Throne

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Slavoj Žižek tells a story of hearsay about Kemal Ataturk, the father of modern Turkey. Ataturk, austere and deeply committed to his country by all appearances, was consistently surrounded by rumor of scandal: “he was a great playboy who slept with the wives of all his collaborators.” Such a scandal sounds damaging; but, according to Žižek’s telling, those in the know claim that this scandal hid something much more mundane, yet deeply damaging, about the leader. From the mid-1920s onwards, Ataturk was in fact an impotent drunkard. Ataturk’s promiscuity was a rumor spread by his own officials to hide suspicion of his impotence. In other words, a reputation of promiscuity and infidelities was considered preferable to ... Read More

  • Isaiah 39 and the Motif of Human Trust in First Isaiah

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: General agreement exists that chronology is not the decisive factor in the current order of Isa 36–39. The section refers to “the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah,” “Sennacherib” (36:1), and Merodach-baladan (39:1). Sennacherib ruled Assyria from 705 to 681 BCE. If Hezekiah began his reign in 715/714 BCE,1 his “fourteenth year” would fall in 701, when Sennacherib invaded Judah, capturing forty-six of its fortified cities.2 Merodach-baladan (Akk. Marduk-apla-iddina) ruled Babylonia on two different occasions, first in 721–710 BCE and later for a brief period of nine months in 703–702.3 His envoys arrived in Jerusalem either during Ashdod’s rebellion against Assyria in 713–7114 or 703–702, when Merodach-baladan ... • The Greek in Daniel 3: Code-Switching, Not Loanwords

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The dating of the book of Daniel has long been a controversial issue. The book’s narrative is set in sixth-century BCE Babylonia. Traditionally, this was also assumed to be the time and place of the book’s composition, as it still is by some scholars. Starting with the third-century CE Neoplatonic philosopher Porphyry, however, an alternative, second-century BCE date of composition has been proposed for the latest parts of the book.1 In this view, the apocalyptic predictions of chapters 7–12 refer to the events surrounding the Maccabean Revolt. Most of these predictions would then have been written as vaticinia ex eventu after the events they predict had already taken place. The debate over Daniel’s date thus ... Read More

  • Let the Nations Sing Hallelujah: The Influence of the Egyptian Hallel on
the Citation of Psalm 117 OG in Mark 12:10–11

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Coming from one of the most frequently cited psalms in the New Testament, the citation of Ps 117:22–23 OG (118:22–23 MT) in Mark 12:10–11 concludes and sheds light on a parable that decisively influences the gospel’s second half.1 The citation closes the parable of the tenants, which Jesus tells to the chief priests, scribes, and elders while in the temple before Passover during the week of his execution. Many scholars see the citation as divorced from the parable’s Sitz im Leben and instead understand the text as a later addition, appended in order to stress the theme of the son’s vindication, otherwise only implied in the parable.2 Others, who view the citation as integral to the parable, also focus on how it ... • The Syntactic Flexibility of 1 Corinthians 14:33b

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: There is no consensus among scholars on the proper syntactical position of 1 Cor 14:33b (ὡς ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τῶν ἁγίων, “as in all the churches of the saints”). The decision to join verse 33b with what precedes (οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἀκατα-στασίας ὁ θεὸς ἀλλ’ εἰρήνης, “God is a God not of disorder but of peace”) or with what follows (αἱ γυναῖκες ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις σιγάτωσαν, “women should be silent in the churches”) has had a serious impact on the exegesis of 1 Cor 14:34–35 due to its apparently ecumenical validation of the silencing of women in the churches, with far-reaching ecclesiastical consequences keenly felt among women up until today. While the authenticity of verses 34–35 (mulier taceat) is still being ... • Demonic Faith and Demonic Wisdom in James: A Response to Kenneth M. Wilson

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In a recent article in this journal, Kenneth M. Wilson argues that Jas 2:18–20 has been perennially misunderstood as a result of interpreters following—largely unwittingly—the interpretive path blazed by Augustine.1 It is clear that in these verses the author of James presents his argument about faith and works in the form of a diatribe with an imagined interlocutor, but Wilson contends that Augustine, relying on a Latin text that lacked certain indicators of diatribe, misread the extent of the interlocutor’s words and thus erroneously attributed the notion of “demonic faith” in 2:19 (“even the demons believe”) to the epistle’s author (e.g., Augustine, Serm. 162A.4, 7; Tract. Ev. Jo. 6.21).2 In Wilson’s proposal ... Read More
