    • Authors: Saime GÜL; Özge MAVİŞ SEVİM
Abstract: In this study, firstly, 5th grade English Textbook, Happy English was analyzed in the context of transferring values. In this part of the research, the document analysis technique was used and the data were analyzed with the descriptive analysis method. As a result of the analyses, it has been determined that values such as friendship, healthy life, sportsmanship, helpfulness and kindness are frequently included, and that there are very few data on values such as justice, honesty, love, respect, patriotism and self-control, which the Ministry of National Education emphasizes in the English curriculum. Another aim of the study is to reveal the opinions of English teachers about values education in 5th grade textbooks. The study group of the research consists of 40 English teachers working in educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Turkey, throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. Semi-structured questionnaires were used as data collection tools and descriptive analysis was utilized for the data analysis. The results of the study suggest that teachers consider important to integrate values education with regards to recognizing, understanding and respecting different cultures, along with helping the acquisition of our own national and spiritual values, providing personality/character development and increasing interest in the lesson. It has been observed that the majority of the teachers participating in the research are of the opinion that the activities, content and visuals for values education in the book are not sufficient. Teachers stated that they had difficulties in values education due to reasons such as inadequacy/lack of activity in the textbooks, not being able to receive support from families, the difficulty of internalizing and implementing some values, and the intensity of the curriculum. Teachers also made various suggestions as solutions for these problems.

           Women During Unintended Pregnancy Period

    • Authors: Amine Hümeyra BULDUR; Gülüşan GÖCEN
Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the ways in which expectant mothers who have had an unintended pregnancy make sense of pregnancy and motherhood, and to try to draw a picture from the perspective of the psychology of religion by considering the religious, spiritual and psychological aspects of their experiences during this critical period in the transition to motherhood. In this qualitative field study, phenomenological approach was employed with conducting semi-structured interviews with 25 married Muslim women, 12 of whom are actively working, majority of them have completed undergraduate and graduate education and whose ages varies from 21 to 38 (mean 28.7), selected by snowball and criterion sampling tapproaches of purposeful sampling methods, 11 of them had their first pregnancy, 6 of them had their second pregnancy, 7 of them had their third pregnancy and 1 had their fourth pregnancy. The results obtained from descriptive and content analysis have indicated that women who experienced unintended pregnancy use religious and spiritual coping methods to combat the emotional intensity they experience (i), and they need moral support from both their family and social circles and professionals in this field (ii). In addition, while the sub-theme of "surprise and shock" was dominant in the emotional states of the participants when they first learnt about their pregnancy (iii), the concept they described most intensely in the way they made sense of motherhood was the sub-theme of "responsibility" (iv). The sub-themes of "economic status" and "relationship with her spouse" came to the fore in the list of reasons that affect the descision of mother-to-be about giving birth to her baby (v).

  • The Place of Religious Education Among Sciences: A Study in the Context of
James Michael Lee's Approach to Religious Instruction

    • Authors: Gurbet KİZİLTAN
Abstract: One of the important issues regarding religious education, is how to ground the subject since it is multi-dimensional and concerns two different sciences such as theological and social sciences. In this study; two prominent approaches, namely the social science approach and the theological approach, have been identified. The aim of this study based on literature review and descriptive analysis is to seek an answer to the question of where to ground religious instruction using the framework of the social science approach of James Michael Lee. First of all, the nature of "religion" and "instruction", the religious instruction process, and content were analyzed. Then, the methodology and basic arguments for theological approach, which stands as the antithesis of the social science approach is analyzed, and finally the relationship between social scientific religious instruction and theology is revealed. In conclusion, it has been found that Lee regards religious instruction as a form of teaching, which is an empirical activity and considers teaching as subject of social science, rather than theology, which is regraded as speculative and cognitive science. Thus, being grounded in theoretical-practical experimental field of study that is based on scientific data related to teaching-learning process religious education, in term of macro theory is situated mong social sciences.

  • Basic Education School Teachers’ Views on Value Education

    • Authors: Yusuf ÖZDEMİR; Elif MERCAN UZUN, Eda BÜTÜN
Abstract: Teachers working in primary education have an essential role in value education. For this reason, this study aims to reveal the views of primary school teachers regarding values education. The research used one of qualitative research methods, the phenomenology. Group of the study was determined by diversity sampling. The study group of the research consists of 33 pre-school and classroom teachers working during the 2020-2021 academic year. The study collected data through the interview form developed by the researchers. To determine the interview questions, literature scan was undertaken and interviews were conducted with the teachers. After receiving expert opinion on the created questions, interviews were conducted with the teachers and after that the questions were finalized. Thus, an interview form which contains 13 structured questions was created. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique. The study indicates that while values education considered necessary, factors such as; academic-oriented understanding, inadequacy in the curriculum and the fact that the practice is left to the initiative of the teacher are negatively affect values education. The study also suggests that the family is of utmost importance in the development of values, besides that media, social media, and friends are effective in values education, other findings also suggest that values education is generally undertaken via inculcation approach, and that its assessment and follow-up is difficult. In line with these results, suggestions such as placing values education at the centre of the curriculum, organizing life-based activities, ensuring family-school-communication, and using modern value teaching methods are made.

  • Examination of Cultural Elements in Primary School Science Textbooks

    • Authors: M. Fatih GÜVENDİ
Abstract: This research aims to determine the cultural elements in primary school science textbooks. In the research, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. In the analysis of the data, the texts, stories, pictures, biographies, events, arts, tools, and structures in the science textbooks were subjected to content analysis. In the research, primary school 3rd and 4th-grade science textbooks were examined. The cultural elements in the textbooks are classified and tabulated under nine main headings. The research has shown that more cultural elements are included in the textbooks prepared by MEB Publications. It has been determined that the units “Let's Get to Know Our Planet” and “The Earth's Crust and the Movements of Our Earth” contain more cultural values. Contrary to the studies in the literature, it has been concluded that Turkish-Islamic scientists are given very little place in the textbooks. According to the results, it can be stated that the pictures and thoughts of Turkish-Islamic scientists can be given more place in primary school science textbooks. In addition, it has been suggested that the pictures and elements used in the textbooks should be chosen from the visuals reflecting the Turkish culture.
