Crisis of Values: a Critical Analysis

  Abstract: In this article, I examine some theoretical doubts about the crisis of values. Among other things, I consider the following issues: crisis of values versus crisis of value consciousness; crisis of values in general versus crisis of concrete values; negative and positive aspects of the crisis of values; and theoretical crises versus crises of practical life. The aim of the considerations is to clarify the terminology used in the theories of crisis and to answer the question as to whether we are currently experiencing a crisis of values.

Nature in Progress – Tocqueville and the Transformation of Natural
Law

  Abstract: Hayden White famously claimed that Tocqueville’s emplotment of history was „tragic” by genre, and his ideological implications were „radical”. The aim of this paper is to argue that this interpretation is correct, but that our arguments will be based on a subject entirely ignored by White: Tocqueville’s meagre scarce remarks on nature and natural law. According to their commonsensical definition, natural laws must „stem from God, nature, or reason”, but this relationship in Tocqueville is highly problematic. As I intend to prove, Tocqueville probably did acknowledge the existence of natural laws, and even intended to describe their resulting obligations (as in the case of what virtuous deeds are, or what humanity is etc.), but the way he defined nature herself suggests that the precise content of such obligations cannot be settled easily. Hence, according to our claim, a disturbing tension can be observed between the way Tocqueville attempted to describe certain natural laws, and the way he defined natural laws in general. Furthermore, this tension is analogous with the aforementioned friction between the author’s personal convictions and his scientific conclusions.

On Archibald Alison’s Conception of Aesthetic Experience and Its
Selected Sources and Inspirations

  Abstract: The present article is devoted to aesthetic experience as conceived by Archibald Alison. It reconstructs the associationist sources of his views in the form of selected issues from the aesthetics of D. Hume and A. Gerard. In the case of the former, three types of beauty and the general characteristics of experiencing them are recalled. In the case of the latter, a general view of the nature of aesthetic experience is presented, including the role of internal senses, feelings, their accumulation and associative relations. Alison’s conception of autonomous aesthetic experience is laid out based both on the first edition of his works and on subsequent editions, which include quite substantial revisions. Discussed in detail here are the issues of simple emotion and the aesthetic train of ideas, which together constitute an autonomous aesthetic experience. Also, the article provides an explanation of the difference between emotions of pleasure and emotions of taste. Moreover, it outlines the social resonance of aesthetic taste and its manifestations.

Kazimierz Twardowski’s Philosophy and Mykhailo Rudnytskyi’s
Literary Criticism

  Abstract: In this article Twardowski’s philosophy and Rudnytskyi’s literary criticism have been compared for the first time. The purpose of the comparative analysis was to identify Twardowski’s tradition in the works of his student Rudnytskyi. This comparison seems to contribute to a rethinking of Rudnytskyi’s literary criticism in Ukrainian culture, namely to clarify its philosophical background, conceptual apparatus, and methodology. In the introduction some critical remarks on Rudnytskyi’s literary work, that were made by Ukrainian scholars, have been provided. Next, in the first part, the methodological and philosophical background of Twardowski’s philosophy has been analyzed. The second part encompasses an attempt to reconstruct Rudnytskyi’s literary criticism. In the third part the author argues the direct impact of Twardowski’s philosophy on Rudnytskyi’s literary criticism. Finally, in the conclusions, the author claims that Rudnytskyi’s literary criticism had a philosophical background, conceptual apparatus, and methodology.

Filozofia starożytnej Grecji w twórczości Władysława Tatarkiewicza do
roku 1947 – zarys

  Abstract: Władysław Tatarkiewicz to polski uczony, historyk filozofii i filozof, który od początku swojej drogi naukowej, aż do jej końca, badał filozofię starożytnych Greków. Jego twórczość historycznofilozoficzna pozwala wnioskować, że uznawał on filozofię starożytną za fundament filozofii europejskiej, w czym – jak się wydaje – nie ma nic zaskakującego. Z kolei jego oryginalna twórczość filozoficzna świadczy o tym, że dociekania starożytnych Greków były dla niego szczególnie inspirujące. Celem artykułu jest szkicowe przedstawienie tych prac Tatarkiewicza sprzed 1947 roku, w których wątek filozofii greckiej został przez niego podjęty jako przedmiot badań historycznofilozoficznych lub jako źródło refleksji filozoficznej. Analiza twórczości zogniskowana na wątku filozofii greckiej została umieszczona w kontekście dotychczasowych badań nad metodologią Tatarkiewicza, co pozwoliło udzielić wstępną odpowiedź na pytanie o znaczenie antycznej filozofii greckiej dla jego rozwoju filozoficznego.

Idealne ciało Berkeleya. Status ciała w filozofii percepcji George’a
Berkeleya wyłożonej w Nowej teorii widzenia

  Abstract: Filozofia George’a Berkeleya to swoiste połączenie idealizmu i empiryzmu. Berkeley jest znany przede wszystkim ze względu na głoszoną przez siebie tezę o nieistnieniu przedmiotów materialnych. W Nowej teorii widzenia przedstawia natomiast proces poznania ugruntowany w percepcji zmysłowej, tym samym przyznając zmysłom uprzywilejowaną rolę w poznaniu rzeczywistości. Artykuł ma na celu próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie o status ciała i cielesności poznającego człowieka w tak zarysowanym procesie poznania w kontekście doktryny immaterialistycznej. Proponuję takie odczytanie Próby stworzenia nowej teorii widzenia, które nie skupia się na rozumieniu jej treści w perspektywie późniejszego, uznawanego za najważniejsze dzieła Berkeleya: Traktatu o zasadach poznania ludzkiego. Zamiast tego przyglądam się tym fragmentom, w którym Berkeley posługuje się pojęciami związanymi z ciałem i cielesnością – przede wszystkim ideami dotykowymi – żeby zobaczyć, jak, według Berkeleyowskiej doktryny, należy rozumieć zmysłowe ciało poznającego podmiotu. W swojej dojrzałej doktrynie Berkeley dopuszcza istnienie jedynie dwóch rodzajów bytów: aktywnych umysłów oraz biernych idei. W związku z tym zmuszony jest zmysłowe ciało poznającego człowieka zaliczyć do jednego z nich. W pracy staram się wykazać, że nie mógł zrobić inaczej, jak utożsamić poznające ciało z aktywnym umysłem.

Francisa Herberta Bradleya obrona metafizyki

  Abstract: Celem artykułu jest analiza argumentacji jaką sformułował w obronie metafizyki Francis Herbert Bradley we wstępie swego głównego dzieła Appearance and Reality. Oksfordzki filozof, będąc jednym z ostatnich znaczących przedstawicieli systemowej filozofii, świadom był, że epoka w jakiej przyszło mu żyć i tworzyć, była epoką, w której poddawano w wątpliwość zasadność czy wartość metafizyki rozumianej jako teoria pierwszych zasad. W swej obronie metafizyki Bradley poddaje krytyce argumentację antymetafizyczną, którą nie bez podstaw możemy wiązać z myślą Kanta i Hume'a. Wskazuje on również, niejako uprzedzając XX wieczną krytykę systemowej filozofii, że nie jest ona źródłem dogmatyzmu, lecz raczej jako krytyczna refleksja nad naszymi pojęciami, jest w istocie ”azylem dla kogoś, kto bardzo chce myśleć spójnie, a jest zbyt zdolny i autentyczny, by stać się niewolnikiem tępego fanatyzmu lub nieuczciwej sofistyki”.

Moc twórczej Jaźni w filozofii Fryderyka Nietzschego

  Abstract: Opierając się na rozwijanych przez Nietzschego pojęciach woli mocy i sensu, starałem się pokazać, pod jakim względem twórcza Jaźń świadczy według niego o największej ludzkiej mocy. Jedną z najbardziej ogólnych cech mocy jest zdolność istoty do coraz lepszego zawłaszczania sił otaczającego ją świata. Stąd wyłaniają się trzy aspekty mocy: osobisty charakter tej integracji, rozległość zintegrowanego świata i przewyższanie samego siebie, które im towarzyszy. Ale w przeciwieństwie do „archaicznego” człowieka, który usiłuje narzucić swoje bycie światu poprzez władzę, odciskając swoje piętno na świecie jedynie poprzez wąską, zewnętrzną i niezmienną perspektywę swojej woli władzy, mocny człowiek potrafi zawładnąć siłami świata całą swoją istotą, z całą swoją wrażliwością. Jest zdolny do głębokiego zjednoczenia się ze światem, co pozwala mu na integrację dzięki własnej sile plastycznej znacznie szerszego spektrum sił, ale też zmusza go do przewyższenia samego siebie, ponieważ w tym procesie integracji jego własna tożsamość zmienia się. Nadając nowy sens światu, zmienia sens własnego bytu. Ten stosunek do świata i ta moc charakteryzują twórcze jaźnie.

  Abstract: This paper analyses the attitude of the contemporary philosophy to the problems associated with increasingly radical diagnoses concerning anthropogenic climate changes that may lead the human civilization on Earth to a global catastrophe. One can identify three approaches to this issue in contemporary philosophy: involvement in the breakthrough taking place; evaluation of the change process from an axiological perspective or ignoring the evolving phenomena on the grounds that it is not possible to define them meaningfully from the perspective of theoretical orientations that currently dominate the contemporary philosophy.

The Importance of Evaluative Thinking and the Excess of Scientific
Effectiveness - Inspirations from Henryk Elzenberg’s Thought

  Abstract: The dynamics of changes in science inevitably, but also increasingly urgently begins to include ethical reflection. These issues include such problems as: the gap between the prestige of scientific and didactic activity, building scientific achievements solely through the prism of their carrying capacity, or the lack of influence of science on social and cultural life. The dominant role in shaping teaching standards is played by such phenomena as parameterization, indexing, coefficients or accreditation, while the normative space of scientific activity is no longer subject to such obvious standardization. The educational and cultural role of the people of science devalues towards entrepreneurship and effectiveness. Based on Henryk Elzenberg’s views on the excess of the importance of science to the detriment of evaluative thinking, it can be noted that contemporary academic expertise does not seem to pursue any axiological connotations, which in the long run is a highly disturbing advantage for culture.
