  • Chrystianizacja Anglii według Historia ecclesiastica gentis Angelorum
           Bedy Czcigodnego

    • Authors: DOROTA KOŁODZIEJCZYK
      Pages: 7 - 21
Abstract: Bede Venerable from Northumbria belongs to the group of the most prolific writers of the early medieval period. This Benedictine friar from Britain became famous thanks to his chronicle: Historia ecclesiastica gentis Angelorum, dedicated to the history of his motherland since the moment of Gaius Julius Caesar’s arrival until the year 731. Thanks to this chronicle, but also his other historical records concerning, e.g. Benedictine abbots, Bede Venerable owes his name of ‘the father of English historiography’. The issue of the Christianisation of Britain, connected with the continuous sending of missionaries on the British territory, creates the main part of this chronicle. This article is an attempt, undertaken with a certain amount of timidity, to outline the  history of the introduction and renewal of Christianity in Britain based only on the chronicle written by Bede Venerable.

  • Chrystianizacja Słowian połabskich

    • Authors: Justyna Sprutta
      Pages: 23 - 34
Abstract: The Polabian Slavs were the last refuge of paganism in the Slavic region. They survived until 1168, because then Rugen, the last pagan bastion of the Slavs after the destruction of Radgosc, was conquered by Waldemar I, king of Denmark. The Polabian Slavs put up the longest resistance to Christianization, seeing it as a threat to their identity, nationality and tradition, of which the pagan cult was an important part. Even in 1147 a crusade was organized against the pagan Polabians, for which St. Bernard of Clairvaux called. The world of pagan Slavs ended with the moment of fall of Rügen and its Arkona, which became the centre of Slavic pagan cult after Radogosc. Two or three centuries later, Polabian Slavs were germanized, losing their nationality and thus becoming the part of Germany.

  • Misyjne nauczanie Jana Pawła II podczas pielgrzymek do Polski

    • Authors: Grzegorz Adamiak
      Pages: 35 - 56
Abstract: During his pilgrimages to his homeland, John Paul II was teaching his countrymen about the problems specifi c to the Church in Poland, but also to the whole Church. One of these themes was the missions ad gentes. The Pope noticed and pointed out on the example of the history of his nation that missions built Polish statehood and shaped Polish culture. He called for this process to be recognized in the history of Europe as a whole and to recognize in evangelization the factor that builds and defi nes its true identity. He showed that missions help imbue human culture with a supernatural element. He recalled the truth about the missionary nature of the Church and the missionary vocation of all its members. Responsibility and cooperation in the missionary work was for John Paul II one of the forms of the “imagination of mercy.”  Appealing to his countrymen for missionary generosity and commitment, he also pointed to the fi gures who were involved in the animation of the missionary work in the Polish and universal Church. In his teaching in Poland, he recalled the missionary task of the Church community and of each and every faithful.

  • Siedem cech charakteryzujących nową ewangelizację

    • Authors: Michał Zborowski
      Pages: 57 - 69
Abstract: The new evangelization is a concrete task, precisely described in the documents and teaching of the Church. Its characteristic features include: a new context in which the Gospel is proclaimed, a new recipient of this message, a new enthusiasm, new methods, new means of expression, as well as a new keryx and a new content, which is the kerygma sensu stricto. The new evangelization is one of the three types of evangelization in addition to the mission ad gentes and the ordinary evangelization.

  • Populizm religijno-polityczny Eva Moralesa wyzwaniem dla
           Kościoła katolickiego

    • Authors: Jarosław Tomaszewski
      Pages: 71 - 84
Abstract: The article shows the diffi cult problem of how to renew the dialogue between the Catholic Church, present in Bolivia since the sixteenth century and the populist
regime of Evo Morales, nowadays expelled by the Bolivian opposition from his own country. The painful division of the Bolivian society into several distinctly separate groups is a huge missionary challenge for the Catholic Church in Bolivia. Catholicism cannot look indiff erently at the many social experiments conducted in the area of this very poor  Andean country. What is required, is a radical change of the spiritual formation, which will lead effi ciently to a renewed reception of the Gospel in the free heart of the Bolivian nation.

  • Od ateizmu do teizmu poprzez krytykę „pięciu dróg” św. Tomasza w
           świetle myśli Antony’ego Flewa

    • Authors: Angelika Mrówka
      Pages: 85 - 102
Abstract: Atheism and theism have been seen rather as contradictory points of view, without the possibility to enter into dialogue. In 1966 Antony Flew published a book entitled God  and Philosphy, a key work, in which the author criticised theism and later – the logical justifi cation of atheism. He took up a constructive criticism of the Five  Ways of St Thomas Aquinas. Flew achieved his goal, because he provoked theists to revise their views and ways of formulating theological arguments. Finally, Antony Flew considered again his own attitude and thanks to conducted debates and discussion with theists, he came to the conclusion that God exists. Antony Flew spent almost his whole life on a quest to fi nd the truth. He could be a positive example of an open-minded philosopher, because only such a person is able to contribute to an open a dialogue between atheism and theism.

  • Miranda Prorsus: An Encyclical Letter of Pope Pius XII on Motion Pictures,
TV and Radio – its Impact on the Catholic Church Media in Zambia Today

    • Authors: Freeborn Kibombwe
      Pages: 103 - 115
Abstract: This article refl ects on the sixty years marking the anniversary of the encyclical letter Miranda Prorsus by Pope Pius XII. Miranda Prorsus was the fi rst document written in 1957 by the Church to refl ect on the three important means of communication: Motion Pictures (Film), Television (TV) and Radio. It highlighted the importance of these  “remarkable technical inventions” to aid humanity in as far as development and understanding the media was concerned. Each of these three instruments of communication is examined in both the strengths and weaknesses they carry, but much more, how they can play a role in advancing humanity in the area of morality and truth telling. The article tries to use some of the important highlights in the context of Zambia my country that has embraced these means of communication with radio stations set up by the respective Bishops and a Television soon to be launched by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB). In retrospect the article tries to show how these means and technical inventions can become handy in as far as the evangelization is concerned.

           Badania pastoralno-prasoznawcze

      Pages: 117 - 131
Abstract: Media communicating via the Internet have become tools of evangelizing infl uence since the early 1990s. They became the subject of research for the author, in terms of  how well they are known to the Internet users depending on the degree of religiosity they declared (believers and regular users, believers and occasional practitioners, non-believers), which allowed to formulate pastoral postulates and conclusions. The survey included persons from a representative, nationwide sample (N = 1000) who  completed standardized CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) questionnaire interviews and VIDI (Virtual Individual In-Depth Interviews – individual indepth interviews).  This is the fi rst such extensive research on Poland. According to the research, the knowledge and use of Christian media that communicate through the Internet, including the missionary ones, changes depending on the respondents’ declared degree of religiosity.

Panny Niepokalanie Poczętej jako realizacja misyjnego posłannictwa
           Kościoła

    • Authors: Jędrzej Machalski
      Pages: 133 - 145
Abstract: Since the apostolic times, the Church has continuously fulfi lled the invitation addressed by Jesus to his disciples: Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). The Second Vatican Council, writing about the missionary nature of the Church, clearly emphasized the importance of the task of bringing the Good News to all people on Earth. This mission includes the activity of the Sisters Servants of the Holy and Immaculate Virgin Mary, a congregation founded by blessed Edmund Bojanowski. Although the congregation was not established with missionary work in mind, the fi rst Sisters left Poland as early as 1928, realizing the deep missionary  awareness that had always been present in Bojanowski. Currently, the Sisters work almost on all continents, running schools and nurseries for children, serving the sick in  clinics and hospitals, working for charity, parishes and pastoral care. The spring months faced the Sisters with the challenge of dealing with the covid-19 virus epidemic, which aff ected, among others, the functioning of the hospitals and schools run by the Sisters, putting many children in poor health at risk because of the conditions in which they live. The Sisters often added a request for prayer and support to the current news published on the Internet. Although due to the epidemic, the departures of volunteers became impossible, many people of good will supported and  continue to support the missionary activity of the Sisters, remembering the words of
Christ: Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me (Matthew 25:40).

  • For the record: The Canton exile of the missionaries (1666-1671) by the
           Polish Jesuit Szpot Dunin

    • Authors: Thierry Meynard
      Pages: 145 - 185
Abstract: The Chinese Rites Controversy definitively shaped the history of Christianity in China. When some missionaries were exiled in Canton from 1666 to 1671, they sought to resolve their disagreement on whether certain Confucian rituals could be practiced by Chinese Christian converts but their differences ended up even more entrenched. In his unpublished history of the China mission covering the period from 1640 to 1700, the Polish Jesuit Tomasz Ignacy Szpot Dunin (1644-1713) gives an account of the discussions held in Canton. His account not only reveals previously known materials but also offers new insights on the Controversy.
