  • Tidegärden i kyrkotraditionerna

    • Authors: SGL:s redaktion
därpå följande ”återupplivande” under 1900-talet. Författare: Rickard Melkersson, fil. dr. i Nordiska språk, universitetslektor, Högskolan i Halmstad. Sverker Jullander, senior professor i musikalisk gestaltning, Luleå tekniska universitet. Jimmy Österbacka, präst i Evangelisk-lutherska kyrkan i Finland, doktorand i praktisk teologi, Åbo akademi. Robert F. Ninna Edgardh, professor i kyrkovetenskap, särskilt diakonivetenskap vid Uppsala universitet, präst i Svenska kyrkan. Karin Karlsson, kyrkomusiker, bibliotekarie, fil. lic. i litteraturvetenskap. • Tonsättningen av Trons mysterium

    • Authors: Mikael Löwegren
      Pages: 12 - 12

    • Authors: Rickard Melkersson
      Pages: 13 - 52
Abstract: This article studies the little offices of the Blessed Virgin and of the Holy Spirit in nine books of hours from 15th- and 16th-century Sweden and Denmark. Among these, four are printed books, two in Latin, one in Danish, and one in Swedish. One of the main purposes of the present study is to assess and analyse possible differences in liturgical uses between these printed books. Five manuscripts are included in the study – one in Danish, four in Latin – in order to provide a wider context for the printed books. Furthermore, the comparison between these Scandinavian sources is discussed in the light of the Marian office proper for the Bridgettine Order (the so-called Cantus sororum), as well as in relation to the Marian little office of some major religious orders and the Roman (Tridentine) little office. A theoretical section of the study stresses the importance of treating the genre of little offices according to its own internal logic, which is somewhat different from that of the divine office proper. The study shows that no clear distinction between different diocesan liturgies can be observed in the Swedish material, although some such distinctions between the Danish and the Swedish books can be
made. The overall impression is one of unity on the level of liturgical use (usus), especially when compared to the Roman little office and orders of the offices of the religious Orders, none of which seem to have had any major influence on the Swedish and Danish office. However, all of the primary sources – printed and handwritten alike – exhibit a considerable degree of variation on other levels, in such a way that it seems evident that they have been edited more or less independently. It is further argued that a Swedish little office of the Blessed Virgin, similar to the one found in the later sources, is likely to have existed prior to the compilation of the Bridgettine liturgy, contrary to what has been argued in some studies in previous scholarship.

  • På väg mot en perfekt symbios'

    • Authors: Sverker Jullander
      Pages: 53 - 96
Abstract: This study deals with different approaches to the use of Gregorian chant with Swedish texts in the Divine Office, from the 1920:s onward, with particular focus on psalmody. In 1924, the clergymen Arthur Adell and Knut Peters published Evangelisk tidegärd, the first modern Swedish-language service order for the Office using exclusively Gregorian melodies. The official Vesperale and Psalterium of 1925, using mainly Gregorian melodies, was severely criticized by Peters, who, together with Adell, sought to establish principles for the use of Swedish texts to Gregorian psalmody. How such principles ought to be formulated and applied was discussed intermittently in the following decades. While all participants in these debates agreed that using Gregorian chant to Swedish texts entailed special difficulties, opinions on how to handle these problems varied widely, and, especially from the 1980:s, it was questioned whether the Swedish language was at all suitable for Gregorian chant. The Laurentius Petri Society, founded by Adell and Peters, maintained that original Gregorian melodies could – and should – be used, whereas the Roman-Catholic diocese in Sweden advocated a modified psalmody, albeit still based on the traditional psalm tones. These differences, reflected in the respective editions, still persist as different ideals and principles, although a converging tendency may be observed in recent years.

  • Facebook-sända tideböner som ekumeniskt tecken

    • Authors: Jimmy Österbacka
      Pages: 97 - 114
Abstract: The present article is an attempt to explore receptive or ”convergent” ecumenism at a digital grass-root level during the global covid-19 pandemic. It is a case study of digital Vesper and Compline, live-streamed over Facebook via a personal user profile. In these hours participants pray with a prayer book of daily hours of the office issued by The Ecumenical Community at Bjärka-Säby (EKiBS). By using an ethnographical approach the author has interviewed one of the key persons behind the streamed office hours about this form of prayer in a digital ”room”, the use of daily prayer liturgies during the pandemic, prayer-requests from those participating, and about the book of hours by EKiBS, Tideböner under året. It is important to note that in this kind of research one participates in the generation of data without necessarily knowing where the research process will lead. The study furthermore explores some of the written prayers in Tideböner under året by Peter Halldorf that explicitly constitute prayers for ”unity”. The author attempts to analyze what kind of unity it is that is prayed for through participation in these hours of the office. In both the interviews and in the study of the prayers it may be observed and demonstrated what kind of ecclesial imaginations and concepts of unity that are at work. It is concluded that a receptive ecumenical spirituality is manifested here, and that it may possibly be seen as something of an ”extension” of the spirituality that emanates from EKiBS, which is interesting since EKiBS have until recently been rather cautious with the use of social media.

  • Ställa om – och sen'

    • Authors: Ninna Edgardh
      Pages: 169 - 192
Abstract: This article studies the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on church life in Sweden, and especially the liturgical life of Church of Sweden. During the first year of the pandemic (spring 2020 – spring 2021) local services were increasingly replaced by worship in front of the computer screen. Eucharist was celebrated less frequently and church buildings were for extended periods of time closed not only for services, but also for visitors. The article discusses ecclesiological challenges related to two aspects of these changes. The first aspect concerns the exploding amount of locally shaped varieties and types of worship, when parishes were encouraged to celebrate ”in a way that is possible”. The author relates this to a longer development that may be observed since the early 1970:s, and which has been summarized by theologian Marie Rosenius as ”autonomization”. Parishes have gradually become more separated from each other on a horizontal axis, while simultaneously being dissociated from their dioceses vertically. The effects of the pandemic seem to intensify this development, in turn challenging the ecclesiological idea of the Church of Sweden as defined by a liturgy that is recognizable from one week to the next and from one parish to another. This relates to the second aspect studied here, which concerns the tension between embodiment and disembodiment of church life. Digitalization of liturgical life clearly taps into the latter trend, challenging the ecclesiological idea of the local gathering as the primary expression of the church.

  • Gemensamma psalmer – i olika böcker

    • Authors: Karin Karlsson
      Pages: 193 - 250
Abstract: The present study constitutes an annotated inventory of hymnals and hymn collections in Sweden since the middle of the twentieth century. The material draws on books published by all Christian denominations during the period in question and sheds light on ecumenical matters, adaptation of hymns to new contexts, as well as on tendencies and idiosyncrasies of different waves and inclinations of original hymn writing. Sub-categories, such as hymns for children and schools, and hymns in periods of changing religious and cultural landscapes are given particular attention. The text also studies the changing relationships between those who have issued and consolidated hymns and hymn collections of semi-official and official status. In the latter process individual authors and composers, church leaders, bishops, governments and commercial publishers may operate with different degrees of interaction.
