Abstract Spirituality, understood as the search for the transcendent, and the personal experience of what constitutes the object of faith, is a fundamental tenet in any religious tradition. In the case of Christianity, in all its main branches (Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism), the importance of spirituality cannot be exaggerated. Rubem Alves (1933-2014), one of the most complex and creative thinkers that Brazilian Protestantism has produced, completely innovated the knowledge of spirituality, understood it from an erotic perspective, that is, a perspective of delight, and by the aesthesis-aesthetics experience. This paper intends to present some elements of this Alvesian understanding of spirituality.

  • Liberation Theology and Its Utopian Crisis

    • Abstract: Abstract Liberation theology developed as a theology that focused on the injustices lived by the poor. The 70’s and the early 80’s were the peak of liberation theology with the main production of its authors. However, the enthusiasm for this theology and its academic production began to decrease in the middle of the 80’s. By exploring some theoretical elements of the first generation of liberation theology, we attempt to show that there is a crisis in the former liberation theology, and also that modern utopian reason is at the core of the origin of this crisis. Finally, this article critically analyzes the naive utopian belief in the emergence of ideal worlds in history and its influence on the vision of praxis in liberation theology as well as on modern social thought.

  • Pragmatic Implications of the Theological Discourse

Abstract Since its existential character, the theological discourse has implications on the ways of being and living and, therefore, on Christian practices. This article aims to address the issue of pragmatic relevance as a condition of possibility for the significance of theological discourse. Firstly, it raises the practical demands that theology receives in the current public debate. Secondly, it forms the basis of this theological understanding, which is found in the revealed God as word and act. Thirdly, it develops the discursive and practical characteristics of theology. Finally, it outlines the challenges that arise from the theological reflection on faith as a daily practice addressed to a God who is merciful, liberating, and transforming love.

  • “The song of Moses and the Lamb” (Rev 15:3-4). Sing and celebrate from
           the margins of culture

Abstract “The song of Moses and the Lamb” (Rev 15:3-4) is a good example of the legacy preserved in the biblical texts on the cultural, social, political and religious contexts in which they were composed. The author of the Book of Revelation is particularly interested in motivating readers to adopt a different perspective to what they were living and to act accordingly with this new point of view, which should be born of the faith in the slaughtered Lamb. Facing the propaganda and terror imposed by the Roman Empire, Christians took countercultural options. This “fascinating and suggestive” song testifies to the ability of Christians to proclaim that the Lamb has made them all a new people, that of those who have been victorious over the beast.

  • The Assumptive Messianism of the Son of Man. Reflection in the Light of
           Contemporary Christology

Abstract In the light of the expectations existing in the first century, we present the most relevant features to understand the style of an assumptive messianism, inspired by the figure of the Son of Man, which allows us to interpret the life of Jesus as a solidary surrender. Thus, we review the logic of the imperial power during the intertestamental period, as opposed to the humanizing praxis of the Messiah-Son. The messianic style of Jesus reveals the prophetic and incarnational spirit of Christianity in rescuing the messianic goods that point to a dignified life, especially for the poor, whose utopias deserve to be heard.

  • Being, History, and Mercy: The Oikonomia in the Discussion between Gregory
           of Nyssa and Eunomius

Abstract The study covers the uses of the term oikonomia and its derivatives in the works of Gregory of Nyssa dedicated to the discussion against Eunomius. The analytical perspective allows us theologically to reconstruct the ontological value of mercy from the perspective of the relationship between being and history. The constant actuality of Christian thought can, in fact, be found in the Trinitarian dimension of the Christian God, which as characterized by an immanent relationality is revealed as a relationship in the filiation of the Word who became flesh, in such a way as to pour into history itself the own life. The use of oikonomia is, therefore, linked to the Trinitarian ontology of the Nyssen.

  • The Theological Origin of “Bioethics”. Considerations about
           Saint Francis of Assisi

Abstract The theologian Fritz Jahr was the creator of the word Bioethik (1927). He considered Saint Francis the inspirer of a modern movement of appreciation of the value of life, in harmony with God, the human being, and nature. The "biopsychic" dimension that explains Saint Francis' love for nature—according to Jahr—was completed by Max Scheler's "forms of sympathy." However, two philosophical criticisms were argued by two bioethicists, Peter Singer and Hans Jonas. Finally, the article presents San Francis as a model of the care of creation, according to Pope Francis.

  • Theology of Historical Reality. Epistemic Appropriation from Ignacio

Abstract This article proposes a theology of historical reality in light of Ignacio Ellacuría’s theological writings and in dialogue with some authors who have appropriated his thought. For this purpose, it is considered as a constitutive principle the intellective-sentient act of the believer, and its unfolding as a criterion for the experience of the Christian faith from three interrelated dimensions: “taking charge” of reality, “carrying” reality and “be in charge” of reality. Therefore, this theology points out the urgency of a historical-salvific praxis of the believer, the Church, and theology from the human praxis of the historically crucified peoples whose purpose is the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

  • Support for Patients with Difficult-to-cure Diseases Provided from Luke
           23:39-43

Abstract From the analysis of Luke 23:39-43—where we can observe three ways of dealing with suffering and death—and the dialogue with some authors of bioethics, we present these research that points to the reflection on suffering and death, to help those who carry out a comprehensive monitoring to people who live with difficult-to-cure or terminal diseases. The biblical contribution is combined with the bioethics to generate reflections of support and growth in the midst of extreme situations, aimed to make productive, with a redemptive meaning, the suffering, and the death.

  • Jean-Luc Marion and Theology. Thinking from Love
