  • Francis J. Connell, C.Ss.R.: America's Moral Barometer

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the history of moral theology in the United States, there is little attention paid to Redemptorist Father Francis Jeremiah Connell (1888–1967), except for labeling him an intransigent or conservative voice at Vatican II.1 Doubtless, his ideas were subordinated at the council. He was on the losing side of history. By contrast, his Redemptorist confrere Father Bernard Häring left his fingerprints on many council documents, including Gaudium et Spes, Lumen Gentium, Dignitatis Humanae, and Optatam Totius. For this last text, Häring's input was gathered on how scripture should be studied in seminaries. Not even Connell, a consultant to the Roman Congregation on Seminaries, was given a chance to voice his views on ... Read More

  • The Southern Field Service of the National Catholic Conference for
           Interracial Justice, 1961–1969

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: During the civil rights movement's Meredith March Against Fear in June 1966, the Southern Field Service (SFS) of the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice (NCCIJ) dispatched to Canton, Mississippi, the mediation team of associate director James J. McGuire, Father Sherrill Smith of San Antonio, and Father William M. Lewers, C.S.C., of the University of Notre Dame's School of Law. There, they successfully suggested a compromise that averted a clash following the brutal attack by highway patrolmen on marchers for pitching their tents at an African American public school. Under the agreement, marchers returned to the school without setting up tents and later resumed their march to Jackson unmolested. ... Read More

  • DignityUSA: LGBTQ Ministry, Catholic Morality, and the Limits of
           Institutional Reform

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: DignityUSA is perhaps the most well-known and influential of LGBTQ Catholic ministries.1 From its founding in 1969 until its exclusion from the institutional Church in the late 1980s, it struggled to integrate pastoral care for gays and lesbians with the Church's traditional moral teaching on human sexuality. Unlike most secular gay and lesbian organizations that lobbied governments for change, Dignity focused on reforming the Catholic Church's practices and beliefs. It did so at first through dialogue, education, and relationship-building within Catholic institutions, but over time its commitment to gay and lesbian-affirming theologies and politics set it at odds with many Church leaders. After the Vatican ... Read More

  • A Theology of Voice: VOCAL and the Catholic Clergy Abuse Survivor Movement

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We turned to them as children. Then as adults, we turned to them in vulnerability. If this weekend did nothing else, it has allowed us to release that child's voice within us. That voice that has been screaming. And turn it into a prophetic voice that can move the Church forward. In 1992, Jeanne Miller and Marilyn Steffel convened a national healing conference themed "Breaking the Silence," where they launched the nonprofit VOCAL, an acronym for Victims of Clergy Abuse Linkup (later known simply as Linkup).2 During the 1990s, VOCAL/Linkup became the largest survivor advocacy community in the United States. VOCAL survivors preached that "voice" was the foundation for a spiritual transformation from victim to ... Read More

  • Moralists as Historians: Papal Authority, Humanae Vitae, and Defining
Catholic Moral Theology in the United States

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "Moral theology is the science of human activity as directed toward God as the ultimate supernatural end."1When the above was written, originally in Latin, and published in a 1952 seminary textbook, neither the definition nor its placement would have seemed unusual.2 And yet rare is the moral theologian who would provide such a definition today, much less in Latin. The twentieth century was a time of enormous change in the study of Catholic theology.3 In the United States, only priests and seminarians were the formal students and scholars of Catholic moral theology in the early 1900s. Seminarians were instructed by priest-scholars using textbooks on morals and manuals written for the purpose of assisting priests in ... Read More
