  • Latinx Protestants and American Politics

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Martí G.
      Pages: 1 - 11
Abstract: AbstractThe rise in the proportion of Latinx Protestants in the United States may be coinciding with an increased alignment with neoliberal political agendas—a rising Christian Latinidad aligning with white Christian priorities—which benefits a long-established hierarchy of whiteness and further accentuates racial and economic inequalities. The significance of this still-strengthening religious identity is that any prolonged intensity of this alignment will likely affect the near future of American politics. This brief essay indicates a way to thread together several analytical narratives and to heuristically suggest an approach to emerging patterns of evidence. In short, it appears that contemporary Latinx Protestants should be understood today as steadily developing a distinctly and religiously informed racialized orientation, a process of religious racialization, one that is aligned with the Christian Libertarian imperatives found among white evangelicals. A closer examination of the historical development of Latinx Protestants in the United States with the backdrop of the historical development of neoliberalism and global capitalist structures of political power will serve to further refine our notions of ethnicized religion and the religious mobilization of voters. I anticipate that a broader historical lens, increased attention to political ideologies, greater cross-disciplinary dialogue between various lines of investigation, and a more highly textured assessment of the relation between individual religiosity and State mechanisms of power will yield fruitful and even more provocative lines of inquiry very soon.

  • Sensing the Sacred: Religious Experience, Somatic Inversions, and the
           Religious Education of Attention

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Winchester D; Pagis M.
      Pages: 12 - 35
Abstract: AbstractWhile previous work has focused largely on discourse, contemporary sociological research has started to examine how the embodied, sensory dimensions of religious practice matter in the construction of religious experience. This paper contributes to this development by drawing sociological attention to the religious cultivation of a particular class of embodied experiences: somatic inversions. Somatic inversions, as we define them, are experiences in which dimensions of human embodiment that usually remain in the tacit background of action and perception are brought to the experiential foreground. We demonstrate how these kinds of practically cultivated experiences of inversion—while not religious in any essential way—enable and encourage attributions of religious significance, making purportedly religious phenomena present to the senses and open to further engagement, exploration, and elaboration. We develop our argument through empirical material from the authors’ respective studies of Eastern Orthodox fasting and Theravada Buddhist meditation practices.

  • Racialized Religion and Civic Engagement: Insights into Intra-Muslim
           Racial Diversity on University Campuses

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Nojan S.
      Pages: 36 - 59
Abstract: AbstractSociologists continue to debate the levels of civic participation of multiply marginalized groups. While scholarship traditionally portrayed marginalized groups as disengaged, others have theorized how group identity threat may incite higher engagement levels. Nevertheless, few examine the extent to which marginalized religious groups also have higher levels of civic engagement. This study contributes an empirical account of a racialized-religious community’s civic participation compared to other religious and nonreligious groups while accounting for complex religion (i.e., how religion is embedded with inequality). Drawing on large-scale undergraduate survey data, this article suggests that Muslims’ faith and collective racialized-religious identities enhance their civic participation compared to other religious groups. Findings extend group identity threat and complex religion theories to consider how a racialized-religious identity may produce different engagement patterns within and across religious communities.

  • Paradoxes of Pluralism, Privilege, and Persecution: Explaining Christian
           Growth and Decline Worldwide

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Saiya N; Manchanda S.
      Pages: 60 - 78
Abstract: AbstractThis article examines the effect of church–state relations on rates of Christian population growth or decline worldwide. It makes the paradoxical argument that contexts of both pluralism and persecution do not impede Christian growth rates. In these environments, Christians do not have the luxury of becoming complacent. On one hand, pluralism means that Christianity must actively compete with other faith traditions in order to gain and maintain adherents. On the other hand, persecution can, paradoxically, sometimes strengthen Christianity by deepening attachments to faith and reinforcing solidarity among Christians. Rather, it is a third type of relationship—privilege, or state support for Christianity—that corresponds to the greatest threat to growth in Christianity. Countries where Christianity is privileged by the state encourage apathy and the politicization of religion, resulting in a less dynamic faith and the overall decline of Christian populations. We test these propositions using a cross-national, time-series analysis of a global sample of countries from 2010 to 2020. Our findings provide support for our theory that Christianity suffers in contexts of privilege but not in environments of pluralism or persecution. The finding is robust to a number of model specifications and statistical approaches.

  • Endorsement of Religion–Science Conflict as an Expression of Group
Solidarity among Graduate Students in the Sciences

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Scheitle C; Corcoran K.
      Pages: 79 - 101
Abstract: AbstractWhy do some individuals perceive religion and science as being in conflict while others do not' Research suggests that individuals’ endorsement of religion–science conflict is often as much an expression of identity and group membership as it is an intellectual assessment of the relationship. This study examines this dynamic among graduate students in five science disciplines in the United States. An analysis of original survey data finds that students who both identify strongly with science and believe that others in their scientific discipline are hostile toward religion are more likely to say that religion and science are in conflict and that they are on the side of science. This suggests that endorsements of religion–science conflict are a way for students to express solidarity with a group that is important to their identity.

  • Inquiry, Not Science, as the Source of Secularization in Higher Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Evans J.
      Pages: 102 - 129
Abstract: AbstractThe traditional claim in the literature on religion and science is that exposure to science leads to secularity because the claims about the natural world in the two systems are incompatible. More recently, research has narrowed this claim and shown that conflict over knowledge in the USA is primarily limited to one religion—conservative Protestantism—and only to a few fact claims. In this paper, I test this claim using longitudinal data from matched surveys taken in students’ first and fourth year of university. I find no evidence that the science is more secularizing than nonscience. I then turn to a distinction in university majors long used by sociologists of education—between majors focused on inquiry versus those focused on applying knowledge—and find that majors focused on inquiry are more likely to secularize than those focused on application. I interpret this to mean that learning to inquire secularizes.
