Authors:Clackson B. Pages: 634 - 675 Abstract: AbstractThe influence of G. R. Driver on the translation of the Old Testament in The New English Bible has been controversial particularly in light of Barr’s critique of his use of comparative philology. This article takes a sample of 18 instances of translations of verses in Psalms 51–100 which reflected proposals made in his articles. It explains the proposals, examines their influence on recent Hebrew lexicography, and shows which proposals were subsequently dropped in Psalms: a New Translation for Worship or The Revised English Bible, in order to reassess which proposals have stood the test of time. It is concluded that about half of Driver’s proposals still seem probable, which suggests that wholesale rejection of Driver’s work is unwarranted. Authors:Kozlova E. Pages: 539 - 579 Abstract: AbstractThis article first discusses the concept of acedia/restlessness in Christian monastic and scholastic thought, as well as modern philosophy. Using it as a heuristic tool, it then proceeds to examine this phenomenon in relation to ANE kingship, arguing that a monarch’s unfocused and unchecked energy (one of the manifestations of acedia) could be personally and communally damaging. Focusing on two well-known kings, Gilgamesh and David, it shows how their ‘restless’ rules led to severe repercussions for their subjects. These kings have already been compared in scholarship, but this discussion analyses them specifically through the lens of acedia/restlessness. This line of investigation is prompted by similarities in the depiction of these kings in their respective literary corpora. Thus, The Epic of Gilgamesh casts Gilgamesh, a Babylonian king, as being burdened by a restless heart from the gods; one of the outcomes of this condition is his sexual exploitation of the people of Uruk. 2 Samuel in turn deals with David, an Israelite king, who neglects his duties, becomes restless, and violates Bathsheba, one of his subjects (2 Sam. 11–12). Authors:Viezel E; Avieli N. Pages: 580 - 619 Abstract: AbstractThe prohibition against eating meat and milk together is among the most widely known legal requirements in Judaism. This prohibition is not mentioned explicitly in the Bible (the Biblical commandment not to boil a kid in its mother’s milk does not necessarily imply its post-Biblical interpretation), and it apparently was not known even at the end of the Second Temple period. However, in the first centuries of the common era it was firmly established, and to this day it is a practice that distinguishes religiously observant Jews from the non-observant. Over the course of Jewish history, the prohibition against eating meat and milk together was at the centre of many lively discussions. The sages sought to justify and explain the prohibition in a variety of ways, and the considerations they raised show the complexity that arises from the encounter of daily eating practices with the dictates of faith. In this paper, we will examine the different explanations proposed, and we will propose a new solution to the question of the explanation for this restriction, along with other dietary restrictions recognized in world religions. Authors:Quine C. Pages: 620 - 633 Abstract: AbstractThis paper argues that 1 Kings 20 is a literary composition that creates an idealized picture of kingship and military victory wherein the king combines with the elders, prophets, and deity to reject the impositions of vassalage and defeat their enemy. Yet, the story subverts the image, and the king is raised up only to be brought down. The result is a didactic reflection on the futility of strong kingship and military victory without appropriate Yahwistic acknowledgement. As such, 1 Kgs 20 appropriately heralds the beginning of the end of the Omride dynasty and undermines any positive associations of military strength they may have had. Authors:Montgomery E. Pages: 676 - 708 Abstract: AbstractThe Eden narrative in Genesis recounts the story of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from God’s paradise because they consumed fruit from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil. While the creation account in Genesis 2–3 is well known to modern readers of the Bible, this paper demonstrates that a competing creation tradition existed in Second Temple Judaism. According to this tradition, which circulated at least as early as the Persian period, God intentionally gave knowledge or wisdom to the primordial human(s) as a benevolent gift, and it was this knowledge that set the primordial human(s) apart from other earthly creatures. During the late Second Temple period, the creation account in Genesis 2–3 and the tradition that God gave knowledge to the primordial human(s) came into direct conflict. Consequently, many Jewish writers attempted to accommodate both creation traditions, often by suppressing certain elements of the Eden narrative such as the specific details of Adam’s transgression or the negative portrayal of the tree of knowledge. Authors:Mackie S. Pages: 709 - 737 Abstract: AbstractPhilo of Alexandria’s treatise De sacrificiis Abelis et Caini offers a rich example of his theology and soteriology. The majestic God of De sacrificiis is transcendent, omnipresent, and absolutely unique. Anthropomorphic and anthropopathic conceptions of God also are memorably discussed and dismissed. Standing in tension with these ontological characteristics are relational attributes of God, which often are expressed in redemptive acts. Thus, the merciful God of De sacrificiis ‘transcends his transcendence’, and compassionately reaches out to humans in need. A full array of soteriological themes populate the pages of the treatise, including the war against the passions, the allegory of the soul, transformative revelatory experiences, salvific worship, contemplative ascent, and the vision of God. Furthermore, the agential acts and roles played by God and humans are complexly intertwined, demonstrating a sophisticated, experientially informed soteriology. Though these important Philonic themes typically are interpreted thematically and systemically, thus ‘ironing out’ any idiosyncrasies, this essay closely attends to the particular thought of this treatise. As a consequence, unique elements and emphases emerge, which in addition to distinctive depictions of divine compassion and soteriological agency, include a Stoic emphasis on reason, the relative absence of mediatorial figures, and a rare portrayal of an unequivocal visio Dei. Authors:Smith D. Pages: 738 - 768 Abstract: AbstractThis article surveys historic and recent contributions to the study of the situation of Luke–Acts and the so-called ‘parting of the ways’ between Judaism and Christianity to advance the thesis that these two avenues of inquiry, which have generally been pursued independently, need to be studied in tandem. The article considers stylistic and theological features of Luke–Acts to argue that this corpus was written either by a Hellenistic Jewish Christian or else a Gentile Godfearer whose entrance into the Christian community was mediated heavily by an attachment to synagogue life. The article further argues that the Luke’s portrayal of Jews suggests that the author writes from a context in which the mission to the Jews is ongoing and with a rhetorical aim to persuade non-Christian Jews, either directly among a Jewish readership or indirectly by inculcating a posture of missionary appeal among Christian readers. Finally, the article argues that the Gentile mission in Acts is narrated with a view toward assuaging Jewish-Christian concerns. Taken together, these arguments propose a complex setting for Luke–Acts within a Jewish and Christian cultural milieu and suggest that the Lukan corpus remains an important textual field for research into early Jewish–Christian relations. Authors:Joseph S. Pages: 769 - 794 Abstract: AbstractSince its (re)discovery, the Gospel of Thomas has been a central site of debate in the study of Christian origins. Some scholars regard Thomas as a ‘fifth gospel’; others an ‘anti-Jewish’ text dependent on the Synoptics. This article revisits one of Thomas’s most distinctive themes: protological eschatology. This article argues that logion 18 represents a worldview characterized by an Urzeit/Endzeit correlation, a motif relatively common in apocalyptic Judaism, and reminiscent of arguments from creation characteristic of the historical Jesus. Authors:Pigott J. Pages: 795 - 831 Abstract: AbstractGregory of Nazianzus considered the entry of slaves and freedmen into the clergy as debasing the church, calling bishops drawn from slave stock ‘heaven-bound dung beetles’. Such sentiments were shared by the broader church hierarchy and imperial government of the day with council canons, episcopal rescripts, and imperial laws all prohibiting the ordination of slaves. Yet, the ordination of unfree men was widespread. Indeed, we find Gregory himself complicit in the ordination of the slave of a Cappadocian noblewomen named Simplicia. This prompts two interlinked questions that have garnered little attention. Why was the ordination of slaves and freedmen so problematic for the post-Constantinian church, and what were the drivers that led men such as Gregory to ignore its prohibition' Approaching these questions through a close reading of Gregory’s dispute with Simplicia, we find that within the negotiation between traditional Roman practices and the new Christian narratives of the later Roman empire, the ordination of slaves posed a unique threat to the stability of both the church and state. However, it also becomes clear that despite the potential for social destabilization, slave ordination proved to be an all-too-tempting recruitment strategy for ecclesiasts operating within a crowded religious marketplace. Authors:Gassman M. Pages: 832 - 842 Abstract: AbstractJerome’s De uiris illustribus and Chronicon supply conflicting dates for Arnobius: the reign of Diocletian and the year 327. Mark Edwards has recently defended the latter date for the writing, final redaction, or publication of Aduersus nationes. References to the contemporary social and political situation point, however, to writing under the Tetrarchy; the few chronological references are vague, but do not conflict with an early date. A new datum advanced by Edwards clinches the case, but against the late dating. At 1.16, Arnobius reproaches pagans for blaming the defeat of the Alamanni, Scythians (likely the Goths), and Persians on the Christians among them. An echo of Tertullian, the passage shows that Arnobius must have been writing before Constantine’s open declarations of support for Christianity, after which it would have been impossible, without signalling the irony, to put such words in a pagan mouth. Authors:Herskowitz D. Pages: 843 - 874 Abstract: AbstractThis essay exposes and discusses Karl Barth’s previously unknown involvement in the Second Vatican Council debates over the document on the Jews, which would soon be commonly known as Chapter IV of Nostra Aetate, and argues for its importance for our understanding of Barth’s personal and theological attitude towards Jews and Judaism. Drawing on unknown archival material, it demonstrates Barth’s deep familiarity with all of the main drafts of the document and his awareness of the various forces, both internal and external to the Catholic Church, trying to influence its theological message. It also reveals and analyses a three-page interpretation of the textual history of the document on the Jews written by Barth himself, in which he assesses its various drafts and considers a request from the Jewish committee involved with the Council to approach the Pope personally on their behalf. Lastly, it argues that this episode sheds important light on Barth’s understanding of the accusation of Jewish ‘deicide’ and his doctrine of Israel more generally, both complementing and furthering what is presented in Church Dogmatics, Ad Limina Apostolorum, and elsewhere.
