  • ‘The Faith of Jesus: Translating Hebrews 12:2a’
    • Authors: Gerald Glynn O’Collins SJ.
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
This article shows how a big majority of English translations (17 out of 22 that I examined) have introduced ‘our’ into the text when they identify the subject of the ‘faith’ spoken of in Hebrews 12:2a. Modern commentators on Hebrews, however, have overwhelmingly understood the faith in question as the faith exercised by Jesus and, at best only secondarily, our faith in him. It seems that many translators have been following their predecessors (e.g. the King James Version) rather than reading commentaries.

  • The Failure of Forgiveness of Sins and the Successful Healing: A
           Postcolonial Reading of Luke 5:17–26
    • Authors: Wookyoung Lee
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
This article examines the story of Luke 5:17–26, in which Jesus raised a paralyzed man to walk. Jesus failed to cure the paralyzed man when he initially declared forgiveness of sins; however, he subsequently treated him with orders to stand up and walk. This proves that Jesus rejected the commonly accepted view of the time that the sick are sinners. In addition, this proves that the paralyzed man was healed not because he was a sinner, but because Jesus had the ability to heal. In this way, Jesus the governed is mocking the rulers by imitating their ideology in a mocking way.

  • Philip Pullman’s Jesus and ‘Christ’ - and God'
    • Authors: Robert Morgan
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
A story which dramatizes the distinction between the historical reality of Jesus and the ‘Christ of faith’ has given new life to a once powerful critique of Christian doctrine. Pullman’s alternative version of the gospel story can be countered by historical scholarship which shares his non-supernaturalist assumptions, but a theological response which communicates the Christian message of the gospels is also needed. The allegorical interpretation that Pullman’s fable invites allows a reading that is compatible with a rational form of traditional Christianity.

  • Qohelet’s Implied Author and Implied Readers
    • Authors: John Goldingay
      Pages: 297 - 301
Abstract: The Expository Times, Volume 132, Issue 7, Page 297-301, April 2021.
Qohelet is not only an anthology of journalings or an exposition of an individual’s agonizings; it is also (perhaps more) a book of teaching and a piece of rhetoric. It aims to disturb the assumptions and thinking of people in the Second Temple period who think that they understand reality, think that work is all-important, don’t take death seriously, feel relaxed about their financial position, undervalue everyday things, think that the country’s structures are working satisfactorily, and take their relationship with God for granted. The postscript, however, whether by the same author or by someone else, does then reaffirm the truth of the Torah and the Prophets.

  • Gender Issues in the Patriarchy of the Igbo Culture of Southeastern
           Nigeria
    • Authors: MaryKristel Grace Chinyere Nwuba
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
The main thesis of this work is that women’s rights and dignity are still respected in the cultural setting despite the fact that Igbo is a patriarchal society. Through the organization of women groups in different Igbo localities, women mobilize themselves and gain political power in solidarity to protect and uphold their rights and dignity as human beings. This work suggests that African women theologians, particularly those from Igbo origins, may join hands together and trace the action of Igbo women in the past in protecting their rights and dignity. This implies that they must study the recorded history of the land in Igbo culture and connect it to the present for the good of the current generation.

  • Mark 9:48 and the Worms of Hell
    • Authors: Will Robinson
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
In this paper, I consider whether the worms of Mark 9:48 are to be taken literally or figuratively. I conclude that a literal sense is preferable.

  • Responsive Phenomenology of God: On Varying Divine Evidence
    • Authors: Paul K Moser
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
A ‘phenomenology of God’ will characterize human experience of God, at least regarding some of its distinctive aspects. This article contends that theism acknowledging a God worthy of worship owes its ultimate credibility to a morally relevant phenomenology of God, given the centrality of God’s unique moral character and will in all things divine. The neglect of such a phenomenology has left many versions of theism speculative and uncompelling, even if they call themselves a ‘phenomenology of the Spirit’. So, inquirers about a God worthy of worship should attend carefully to the prospect of a morally relevant phenomenology of God. The article explains that this phenomenology is interpersonally responsive and thus interactive in a manner foreign to typical moral phenomenology, and that it contributes to an illuminating approach to varying divine evidence among humans. The article also identifies a morally relevant challenge, based in conscience, for sincere inquirers about God.

  • Reading 3 John Within a Jewish Framework: An Overdue Reconsideration of
           the Text
    • Authors: Justin Paley
Abstract: The Expository Times, Ahead of Print.
This article challenges the interpretive decision made by many scholars to group 3 John with the rest of the Johannine Epistles (and sometimes John’s Gospel). This interpretative method fails to treat 3 John, as well as the rest of the Epistles, on their own terms. It also often places these texts within a hypothetical ‘Johannine Community’ and its various phases of development. However, if 3 John is read on its own, the text itself points us to interpret it within a Jewish framework. The seemingly lack of interest in Jews and Judaism, rather than being a sign of a later date when this group was no longer rooted in any Jewish community and no longer cared about such issues, is a sign that the epistle dates from a period before this community of Christ-believers began to markedly differentiate themselves from other Jews. These points, as well as the author’s use of τὸν ἐθνικός when describing the missionary work by some of those within the community, may also suggest that the conflict between the Elder and Diotrephes was related to disagreements over the nature of missionary work within the early Jesus movement.
