  • Protection sociale et émancipation. Une alliance vertueuse mais
           instable
    • Abstract: Isabelle Ville
The article discusses the conditions for the possibility of virtuous alliances between social protection and emancipation, using the path opened by Nancy Fraser (2013). Since the 1970’s, social protection devices introduced by the welfare States to help disabled people have been the object of criticisms. On the one hand, disabled persons movements and the disability studies denounce both their paternalistic foundations, the forms of segregation and oppression that they produce, fueling the dependency and passivity of their beneficiaries. On the other hand, “active social States” of the 1990’s try to restrict access to these devices supposed to encourage people to take advantage of national solidarity and to constitute an obstacle to their self-determination. These two lines of criticism converge to consider forms of protection as forms of alienation; they associate emancipation with the exercise of autonomy and the defence of human rights on the one hand, and with individual accountability on the other. A rereading of empirical work concerning two distinct periods of the French context: the inter-war period, with the emergence of the first collectives of disabled people, and the 1990s, marked by the introduction of activation policies, allow to highlight some kinds of arrangements between public action schemes and local care work, real sources of emancipation, even if they remain fragile.

  • Implantation cochléaire et régulation juridique des relations entre les
sourds et la médecine de l’oreille dans les années 1990 et 2000.
L’exemple de deux associations françaises de défense des sourds
    • Abstract: Soline Vennetier
The history of cochlear implant from the 1970s has been characterized by a scientific, ethical, political and anthropological controversy. Combining recent breakthroughs within the sociology of law and socio-historical studies about deaf people’s collective mobilizations, we analyze the way French deaf people collectively seized the juridical tool to sustain their claims in the French health and medical fields, and specifically against cochlear implants. To that purpose, we will study the two deaf associations which pushed forward mobilizations about the cochlear implant in France: “les Sourds en Colère” (1993-1997) and “L’association de Défense des Personnes Implantées Cochléaires” (ADPIC, since 2007). We will show, on the one hand, how these associations’ nature and composition have evolved, and on the other hand, changes on their uses of law; we will see how definitions of deafness and cochlear implants evolve alongside these transformations. While, in the early 90’s, “les Sourds en colère” association used public health regulations and laws in their struggle against cochlear implants qualified as a medical experimentation, two decades later, within a new medical, juridical and activism era, the ADPIC defines itself as a victims’ association claiming for reparation. Doing so, it moves to the human rights field and presents cochlear implantation as a violation of the physical integrity of deaf people. These various ways to qualify cochlear implantation are, more basically, different ways of questioning definitions of deafness, disability and the medical rehabilitative intervention.

  • Negotiating Care: Living Arrangements and Adults with Cognitive
           Disabilities in South Brazil,
    • Abstract: Helena Fietz
Assisted Living for adults with disabilities is a recent subject inboth Brazilian legislation and public debates. Although stillstigmatized by the idea that those who seek different livingarrangements for their children would be abandoning them, the concernwith both the autonomy of people with disabilities and the well-beingof the caregivers has prompted this theme to gain force in public andprivate spheres. Drawing from an ethnographic work with mothers ofadults with cognitive disabilitiesy from Porto Alegre, Brazil, whoconstituted a group to demand governmental action regarding assistedliving facilities, I propose a reflection on how such plea enables afurther discussion on the way disability and care are enacted. I arguethat by thinking of their trajectories through the care practices theyentail, one can track the moralities surrounding their experience ofmotherhood and how they are telling of the way disability is dealt within this specific time and place. Situating their claim within broaderdebates on institutionalization, I stress how their plea cannot beunderstood without a critical stand on ableism and the invisibility anddevaluation of care work.

  • The Communicational Dimension for the Inclusion of People with
           Disabilities in Organization
    • Abstract: Ana Cristina Cypriano Pereira and Gabriel de Abreu Figueiró
This article aims to identify the communication processes existing between organizations and their workers with disabilities, discussing the importance of building accessible relationships and the role of communication in the inclusion of these subjects in the work environment. Given the importance of the subject of the social and professional development of people with disabilities and for the construction of a more inclusive society, a research is proposed that points out the contributions that a communication professional, especially in public relations, can bring as a result of the exercise of their activity in the process of inclusion of these subjects within the organizations. For the accomplishment of this work, a case study was developed with two organizations that already have inclusion programs established. From the results obtained, one can perceive the existence of spaces of social exclusion even in inclusive processes and the importance of the use of assistive solutions as tools that help the construction of accessible communication within the organizations, in order to provide greater professional development and of the subjects with disabilities.

The following short text will explore the professional challenges faced by Mr. Davood Salimi, an Iranian immigrant who suffers from hearing, memory, and coordination issues. At Salimi’s request, the name of his medical condition will not be disclosed. The article will provide readers with a basic summary of Salimi’s biographical information, such as his professional qualifications, and explain the tragic circumstances which led to the development of his medical condition. The invaluable career assistance which AIM CROIT provided for Salimi will also be briefly discussed. In addition, the founding of this organisation and its many accomplishments will be succinctly explained. Finally, the article will conclude with a summary of Salimi’s future career goals and his advice for other individuals who suffer from disabilities.
