Abstract: The Greek philosopher Plato was among the first to recognize that individual health is a function of social and environmental influences and not just a consequence of supernatural phenomena. Plato believed that a healthy body was the consequence of living in harmony and order with other citizens and nature alike. Two millennia later, the first international conference on public health promotion took place in Ottawa, Canada in 1986. It was there that a standard definition originated: “health promotion is a process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.” Since then, the definition of public health has expanded to include interventions that focus on disease and disability prevention.
