  • Toward a Phonetic Description of Hand Placement on Bearings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this article, the sixth in a series detailing our proposed phonetic notation system for signed languages, we focus on describing placement of the hand on placement bearings, as described in Liddell and Johnson (2019). We demonstrate that notating the direction of the bearing and the location of the hand on that bearing allows for the description of both nonindicating and indicating signs. The foundation of our descriptive scheme for placement draws on our observations in the most recent of these papers (Liddell and Johnson 2019), which argues that the hand locates on placement bearings. For more than fifty years, analysts have assumed that loci on the body and loci in the space immediately ahead of the body were ... • Mothers, Mountain Devils, and Pointing to Eternity: The "Horns" Handshape
           in Australian Indigenous Sign Languages

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the rich and diverse communicative ecologies of Indigenous Australia, sign plays an important role, with sign used as an alternative to speech when speech is either impractical or inappropriate.1 The sociolinguistic circumstances that give rise to Australian Indigenous sign languages may be contrasted with deaf community sign languages, including large-scale ones associated with nation-states (for example American Sign Language [ASL], British Sign Language [BSL], Australian Sign Language [Auslan]), and sign languages used in small rural and village communities (for example Kata Kolok in Bali and Adamarobe Sign Language in Ghana). In most circumstances Australian Indigenous sign languages are a culturally driven ... Read More

"Queering Deafhood‚" "Deafing Queerhood," and "Queer Sign Language

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Germany, particularly in Berlin, the public discussion of queer and queer-feminist concerns has increased tremendously in recent years, both within the Deaf community and in spaces that are considered Deaf-hearing intersections. Examples include publications (e.g., Gegenfurtner 2017; Rosenberger et al. 2019) and events (e.g., Martin⋆a Vahemäe-Zierold and Sofie F. Sennel's talk "Deaf and LGBT—Many Intersectional Perspectives" at the Sixth German Culture Days of the Deaf 2018, or Silvia Gegenfurtner, Simone Lönne, Melanie Loy, and Xenia Dürr's theme evening "Deaf Stress Factor: Hearing Ignorance" on October 27, 2018, in Berlin), as well as courses and workshops (e.g., sign language workshops on gender and queer by ... • Toponymy in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language): Formal and
Semantic-Motivational Analysis of the Signs that Name the Cities of Acre

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Naming what exists using words constitutes a human activity that is considered the first stage of man's knowledge of the universe (Biderman 2001, 13). When naming people and places is specifically discussed, the differences pertaining to the field of language, especially with regard to its linguistic status (Maeda 2000, 246) must be taken into consideration, as the names of individuals and geographical spaces are synchronously found in the system of the code itself (i.e., more general) and in the onomastic system (i.e., more specific). It is clear that there is a very close relationship between the semantic component and the nominated referent when people and places are nominated. There are details that connect to ... Read More

  • Temporal Affixation in Polish Sign Language

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In an article by Tomaszewski and Eźlakowski (2021) an analysis of the negative affixation occurring in Polish Sign Language (PJM) and its origin was undertaken from the perspective of concatenative morphology, concerning the sequential combination of morphemes that are expressed one after another in a linear order. For comparison, similar affixes in other sign languages were also mentioned. Nonetheless, some negative affixes in PJM are unique morphological segments not seen in other sign languages. Further research revealed more of this phenomenon. In this article, a different kind of affixation is described. PJM possesses so-called temporal affixes that correspond to the year, the day, the hour, the minute, and the ... Read More
