      Authors: Amy E. Mickel
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Collaboration is the process of people working together toward a common goal and occurs in a wide range of contexts. When done well, almost anything is possible. Because of its potential, collaboration is touted as one of the most promising ways to address today’s most difficult and complex problems. However, not all collaborative efforts realize their potential for a variety of reasons, including the relational aspects of collaboration. Central to collaboration and its efficacy, interpersonal relationships can be enhanced through positive communication. This research explores positive and negative communication patterns in collaborative contexts. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data collected from 278 participants involved in varied collaborative efforts. Fifteen collaborative communication practices emerge as playing an important role in fostering collaboration. Findings from this research contribute to the growing field of positive communication scholarship by offering positive communication practices that people can employ to strengthen interpersonal relationships in collaborative efforts. Guidance on ways practitioners can apply these findings is provided.

      Authors: Chih-Hung Chen
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Innovation Performance (IP) serves as a measure of a company’s effectiveness in translating innovative endeavors into tangible outcomes, encompassing new products, processes, services, and enhancements to existing offerings. This study investigates the relationship between IP, Innovation Knowledge Management (IKM), which includes Innovation Culture (IC) and Knowledge Management (KM), and Supervisory Communication Frequency (SCF). SCF refers to the frequency and quality of communication between supervisors and subordinates, influencing the impact of IKM on IP. Using a structured questionnaire, 320 valid responses were collected from companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE). Data analysis employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Process Macro Model 1, with reliability and validity assessed based on criteria from Hair et al. and Fornell and Larcker. Discriminant validity was confirmed with construct correlations lower than the square root of the average variance extracted (AVE). Path analysis revealed significant differences in IP scores across SCF frequency groups (F (4, 315) = 12.47, p

  • A World of Possibilities: Introducing Positive Communication Scholarship
to Inspire Better Business and Organizational Communication Research

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Julien C. Mirivel, Ryan P. Fuller
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This special issue is an invitation to study business communication with a positive perspective. For decades, researchers in business communication have predominantly explored the problems, challenges, and issues facing organizations and leadership communication. Whether those include exploring the nature of crisis (e.g, Waller & Iluzada), communication responses and outcomes of sexual harassment (e.g., Mills & Scudder), or the role of internal communication in culture creation (e.g., Yue, Men, & Ferguson), researchers’ theoretical and methodological lenses are often used to critique, point to, or reveal the problematic nature of business life. In this special issue, we want to celebrate the extraordinary, what works well in organizations, and the nature of positive communication and its inspirational force for people and organizations. Specifically, we argue that Positive Communication Scholarship should inspire better practice. To support this endeavor, we begin with a brief history of the positive communication movement in the field of communication. Then, using this history, we define positive communication scholarship and describe what it will help our discipline accomplish. We also introduce the articles featured in this special issue, advance an agenda for future research, and end with a call to action.

  • Professional Caregivers’ Communicative Resilience and Flourishing During
the COVID-19 Pandemic: When Disruption Lasts

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Ryan S. Bisel, Katherine Ann Rush, Arden C. Roeder
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
The pandemic was a prolonged and ongoing work disruption, especially for professional caregivers. This explanatory sequential mixed method study revealed that caregivers’ communicative resilience (CR) was positively associated with their experience of flourishing and negatively associated with burnout and intentions to turnover—indicating that CR is, indeed, predictive of the wellbeing of professionals coping with a lengthy disruption at work. Analysis of professional caregivers’ (N = 264) survey responses demonstrated that the continuity factor of CR predicted wellbeing outcomes (i.e., flourishing, burnout, and turnover intentions). However, the change factor of CR did not. Then, highly communicatively resilient caregivers (n = 11) were interviewed to explore their lived experiences of flourishing—experiences characterized by positive emotions while doing meaningful and rewarding work. Implications for positive communication scholarship in organizations conclude the paper.

  • Listening to LGBTQIA Individuals’ Pre-Employment Needs: A Mixed-Methods
           Positive Communication Study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Thomas J. Socha, Kayla Blansett-Peters, Kellie Fennell, Caitlin Finley, Fredous Gambo, Sasha Grigoreva, Zachary Hall, Tyran Hunt, D. J. Mack, Matty Madden, Worth Osgood, Loreto Richard De Miguel, Sherita Washington
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
We listened to LGBTQIA individuals in this exploratory, mixed-methods, positive communication study to better understand preemployment needs from their point of view. Among the most frequently occurring needs LGBTQIA individuals sought in prospective employers were to feel (in order of prominence): “included,” “comfortable,” “safe,” “supported,” and “secure,” in organizations where employers “respected” and “communicated” “transparently” with all workers; qualities mentioned more often than “equal treatment” and “access to help.” Like all employees, LGBTQIA individuals begin to form (pre)employment communication understandings and practices starting with a first job (as teenagers) where early preemployment communication experiences can affect later employment communication practices. Implications for positive employment recruiting communication and for future positive employment communication practices with LGBTQIA individuals are offered.

  • Motherhood at Work: Positive Communication and Maternity Leave
           Negotiations (Un)Bounded by Job Types

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Patrice M. Buzzanell
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This study explored the experiences of two sets of employed mothers (n = 32) who returned to paid labor after taking maternity leaves in the United States prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviews with 11 women working in “active” job types (high discretion, complexity, and resources) as well as 21 women working in “passive” job types (low job discretion, complexity, and resources), revealed differences in their negotiation processes and their positive communication with their managers. Women in active positions co-constructed feminist negotiations with hybrid strategies attending to organizational and their own health priorities and enabled by positive communication. In contrast, women in passive positions did not perceive workplace policies or interactions with their bosses to be flexible, negotiable, or resembling positive communication. Implications consider further research on structural opportunities and constraints to negotiate work-family policies and practices such as ongoing conversations and/or workshops on the benefits of and training in positive communication for employees’ health and well-being.

  • Quality Gratitude Expressions and Happiness at Work

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Peter W. Cardon, Janna Wong
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This research involved a mixed-methods study to explore the nature and outcomes of gratitude expressions in the workplace. A qualitative journaling study revealed that quality gratitude expressions in the workplace involve the following traits: genuine, acknowledgement of positive outcomes, acknowledgement of time and effort, acknowledgement of social support, personalized, and playful. The interview study revealed that key outcomes of quality gratitude expressions were feeling valued, a sense of attachment, and engagement. A follow-up survey of professionals showed that while the quality and quantity of verbal gratitude expressions contribute to higher perceptions of feeling valued and attachment to colleagues, the quality and quantity of written gratitude expressions contribute to all three aspects of happiness: feeling valued, attachment, and engagement. These findings suggest that gratitude expressions are aspects of positive communication that contribute significantly to thriving individuals and communities in the workplace.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Elizabeth A. Williams, Jennifer S. Linvill, Emeline Ojeda-Hecht, Meghan R. Cosgrove, Autumn Buzzetta, Abby Konkel
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
The Great Resignation and COVID-19 pandemic are two extended crises marked by organizational change and employee turnover. This study examines the positive organizational communication experiences that influenced employee retention during this time of organizational crisis. Data for this research were collected through 25 semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a phronetic iterative approach. Through the use of structuration theory, the findings indicated that participants’ positive experiences of organizational communication transformed into reasons to stay with their workplaces during a time of extended crisis. Participants identified how organizational structures were reaffirmed or changed as employees and leaders utilized different resources and created new rules for interaction. Findings of this study show how positive organizational communication experiences can mitigate negative experiences and strengthen employee retention. During crises, organizations and their leaders should focus on fostering connection, belonging, and open communication among all employees.

  • The Role of Public Relations in an Illiberal State: The Case of Russia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Sergei A. Samoilenko, Elina Erzikova
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Drawing upon in-depth interviews with seasoned public relations practitioners, this study suggests that the field of public relations in Russia has gradually transformed over the last 30 years from being relatively independent to being largely subordinated to political and business elites. Failure to sustain the role of public relations as a driver of democratization has coincided with the overall decline of democratic institutions in the country. Current practices in the field primarily focus on promoting government and business interests and lack a systemic approach to developing relations with citizens to address social problems. This study, which focuses on the Russian context, contributes to the body of literature on business communications and international public relations by analyzing how a country’s sociopolitical and economic context can influence transformations within the field of public relations; in this case, evolving from being relatively independent to becoming subordinate to political and business elites.

  • Four Dimensions of Brand Storytelling: Framework for Managing and
           Analyzing Online Brand Stories

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Dorit Zimand-Sheiner
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Corporate brand storytelling is gaining significance as social media and company websites become crucial avenues for consumer engagement. As part of an effort to create engagement with the brand story across all platforms, the current article suggests combining myths’ elements. Adopting the literary approach to myths, this paper defines myth as a narrative that holds significance among its followers. Based on previous research, this paper proposes a corporate brand storytelling model encompassing story, meaning, ritual, and transmedia dimensions. To assess how leading corporate brands use storytelling elements across their online platforms a quantitative content analysis was performed. Four key insights were derived from the study. First, storytelling should be systematically managed and studied according to our model. Second, rituals and transmedia are underutilized in integrating and disseminating brand storytelling. Third, storytelling should extend beyond paid advertising to achieve desired outcomes. Lastly, the incorporation of mythmaking and storytelling highlights the significance of cultural aspects, urging multinational brands to integrate local cultural elements.

      Authors: Yufan Sunny Qin
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
The goal of this study is to expand current knowledge on employee engagement in remote work by investigating the effect of dialogic communication on remote employee engagement. Drawing on dialogic theory and social exchange theory, the study tested a conceptual model that examines how organizational dialogic communication can enhance remote employees’ psychological need satisfaction for relatedness and organizational identification, ultimately leading to increased employee engagement. The study surveyed 527 full-time employees who work remotely in the United States, providing empirical evidence that contributes to the theoretical understanding of organizational communication and employee engagement in remote work environments.

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
By leveraging the trust they have instilled in followers, social media influencers open up new brand communication opportunities. Drawing on interpersonal and brand trust theories, this study conceptualizes influencer trust as a relational, multidimensional concept, and adopts the trust transfer theory to explain how this trust helps with brand communication outcomes. Using a national survey, the study shows that influencer ability, benevolence, integrity, authenticity, interactivity, relatability, and past experience quality contribute to trust in influencer, which then contributes to brand trust and consequently purchase and word-of-mouth intentions. Influencer-brand congruence also plays a moderating role in the model. Relatability and interactivity consistently contribute to all dimensions of trust (i.e., cognitive, affective, and behavioral trust), while other factors only predict certain dimensions. All trust dimensions could transfer from influencers to brands, with cognitive and behavioral trust being the most transferable. The moderating role of influencer-brand congruence only applies to cognitive trust.

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This paper aims to uncover blind spots in research on employee communication regarding LGBT+ to provide guidance for future research. To this end, we conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA-guidelines. A systematic literature search in four databases yielded 3,055 records. Our final sample included 164 publications reporting on 178 quantitative studies (207,181 participants and 3,740 organizations). We extracted information regarding publication details, the content of the record, and the sample from eligible records. Blind spots relate to lacking research (a) outside the U.S., (b) in communication journals, (c) from strong author networks, (d) regarding single LGBT+ dimensions and intersectionality, (e) regarding less obvious forms of employee communication, (f) regarding longitudinal, experimental, research synthesizing, and observational approaches, (g) on other variables than job satisfaction, well-being, or commitment, and (h) on communication theories including LGBT+. For research in the field to thrive, we provide guidance for tackling these blind spots.

Authors: Charis Shin, Jiawei Sophia Fu
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Despite scholarly consensus that communication is significant to entrepreneurial organizing, communication research in entrepreneurship is nascent. To advance theory and empirical research, this article presents a systematic review of entrepreneurship studies published in communication journals. Through a comprehensive keyword and literature search, we identified 49 relevant articles published in the past 30 years. Content and computational analyses suggest scholars have studied entrepreneurship in a variety of communication domains and sub-fields, including news and journalism, new media technologies, and social networks. Furthermore, most research has focused on conventional entrepreneurship and the processes supporting it rather than entrepreneurship’s antecedents and/or outcomes. Based on our review, we highlight six areas for future research in the intersection of communication and entrepreneurship: (1) entrepreneurial identity, (2) innovation, (3) social networks, (4) digital technologies, (5) institutions, and (6) entrepreneurship by historically underrepresented and minoritized groups.

  • Entrepreneurial Podcasting: A Linguistic Ethnographic Perspective

      Authors: Geert Jacobs
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This article sets out to address a gap in the business communication literature by focusing on entrepreneurs’ use of podcasts. I will first report on the business communication research that has been done so far on podcasts and will then go on to expand the scope and explore the literature on podcasts in the wider communication field. This will lead me to propose a set of four key characteristics of the genre, which I will use as the basis for a qualitative study of a single six-episode podcast series launched by an entrepreneur in a North Western European country. Drawing on a linguistic ethnographically inspired analysis I will investigate the hybrid nature of the entrepreneurial podcast (featuring personal transparency and storytelling, but no process transparency or interactivity) and I will argue that it is opening up new opportunities for leadership communication. I will conclude by reflecting on how the analysis presented here can be seen to index the genre’s transition from a homespun to a corporate medium, echoing the notion of media re-colonization and tying in with concerns about leadership branding voiced in the critical management literature.

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This study aims to provide an integrative understanding of the antecedents of voice endorsement from the digital voice context. This paper focuses on the distinctive information displayed on online idea management platforms and employs the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to examine how peripheral cues (the number of readings, likes, comments, voicer status, and voicer identity) and central cues (voice persuasiveness and voice sidedness) influence voice endorsement. We empirically tested our research model with the archival database of 201 employee voice posts on the online idea management platform from a large Chinese enterprise. The results of archival analysis showed that several factors were significantly related to voice endorsement. Specifically, the number of comments, voicer status, and voice persuasiveness were positively related to voice endorsement. Voicer identity and voice sidedness were negatively related to voice endorsement. However, the number of readings and the number of likes were not significantly related to voice endorsement. Moreover, issue involvement significantly moderated the relationship between the number of comments and voice endorsement, as well as the relationship between voice persuasiveness and voice endorsement, and between voice sidedness and voice endorsement. Theoretical and practical implications for voice endorsement are discussed.

Authors: Michael S. Henry, Douglas A. Parry, Daniel B. Le Roux
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Enterprise social networks (ESNs) are a communication standard within virtual teams. Among other affordances, ESNs enable colleagues to provide each other with social support. In this paper, we analyzed the message logs of virtual teams in a large open-source software project to determine how virtual teams use ESNs to provide particular forms of social support to each other and, secondly, to determine how the visibility of these interaction patterns influences team functioning. Our findings reveal distinct ESN use patterns in relation to four types of social support, each described using a metaphor: a dynamic notice board for information sharing, a community of practice for teaching and knowledge sharing, a team huddle for emotional support, and a job board for instrumental support. The findings provide structure to the diverse set of social support actions in this context and identify the higher-order functions that the visibility of social support produces.

Citizenship Behaviors: The Mediating Role of Citizenship Motives

Authors: Colin Hesse, Alan C. Mikkelson
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Organizational communication patterns were used to predict the extent to which employees engaged in organizational citizenship behaviors. Both job satisfaction and citizenship motives were examined as potential mediators in the relationship between organizational communication patterns and organizational citizenship behaviors. Using a census-matched nationally representative sample (N = 378) data were collected from participants from a variety of industries and organizations. As predicted, the conversation and positive conformity orientations positively predicted organizational citizenship behaviors. The negative conformity dimension negatively predicted in-role and organizational citizenship behaviors but counter to the prediction was a positive predictor of individual citizenship behaviors in the path analysis. Citizenship motives served as a full or partial mediator for both the positive conformity and conversation orientations relationship with organizational citizenship behaviors; however, job satisfaction did not act as a mediator for any of the relationships between organizational communication patterns and organizational citizenship behaviors.

Empowered Engagement on Advocacy Willingness and Mediating Roles of Value
           Congruency and Moral Elevation

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This study examines how empowered engagement affects employees’ willingness to advocate for corporate social advocacy (CSA) initiatives. A survey (N = 234) indicates that employee empowerment correlates with an increased willingness to advocate for CSA initiatives. Additionally, the study identifies two mediating variables that enhance this effect: value congruency with the organization and moral elevation. These findings demonstrate the underlying psychological processes within employees: empowered engagement, value congruency, and moral elevation, and all sequentially influence employees’ inclination to promote CSA initiatives. This research augments the existing body of CSA literature by underscoring the pivotal role of grassroots support and advocacy from employees. The implications of these findings offer strategic guidance to corporate management, highlighting the potential of harnessing employee empowerment to achieve meaningful social impact through CSA initiatives.

  • The Importance of Multimodal Resources for Micro-Oriented Analyses of
Interactions: A Case Study of Emergent Leadership in a Hybrid Meeting

Authors: Julie Janssens, Dorien Van De Mieroop
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
In this article we argue in favor of the fine-grained, integrated analysis of multimodal resources for the study of interaction in organizational contexts. For the case presented here, we use video recordings of an authentic hybrid meeting during which the superior is absent for the majority of the interaction. We scrutinize in particular how proximal and distal deontic claims are made and leadership thus emerges in this meeting, which turns out to be out of sheer necessity to ensure the progressivity of the activity. Given that there is thus no explicit struggle over leadership, many subtle semiotic resources—such as gaze, gestures, nodding and paralinguistic features—are used to enact deontic stances. This makes this case of emergent leadership particularly interesting as it demonstrates the importance of an integrated, nonlogocentric approach to obtain a fuller insight into how meaning—and leadership—is negotiated in day-to-day interactions in organizational contexts.

  • Reporting a Cyber Security Breach: How Organizations Respond

Authors: Jef Naidoo, Ron Dulek, Seth Butler, Brooke Baily
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Cyber breaches and ransomware attacks now occur so frequently that they have become facets of organizational life. These breaches are unique in that they are initially silent; a limited number of organizational members know about the incident so firms usually have ample time to prepare a Cyber Breach Revelation (CBR). This study analyzes 378 press releases acknowledging a cyber security breach. It finds four response clusters that highlight how compromised organizations reveal cyberattacks to external stakeholders: (1) empathetic acknowledgment; (2) assurance of the organization’s breach-handling capability; (3) restoration of confidence; and, (4) re-establishment of trust and loyalty. These clusters provide meaningful insights as to how firms reveal cyber breaches to their stakeholders and, equally as important, open the door for further studies as to the effectiveness and sequencing of these approaches.

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This research analyzes the effect of management communication on shared goals and organizational commitment of employees during post-merger and acquisition integration. In addition, we examine whether a work policy in terms of formalization could moderate the effect of management communication on shared goals of employees. Survey data were collected from 209 employees at a company in the power and energy sector in Thailand which was acquired by another company. We implemented multisource data collection to prevent common method variance issues in cross-sectional surveys. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was then used to analyze the data. Based on the findings, we discovered supporting evidence confirming the positive association between management communication and shared goals. Shared goals also mediate the effect of management communication on organizational commitment. Moreover, moderating effect analysis showed that the degree to which management communication affects shared goals is stronger among employees in the work units that have high levels of formalization than those in work units that have low levels of formalization. In essence, our study provides new evidence showing that workplace formalization could be the factor that intensifies the degree to which management communication encourages employees to develop shared goals. Our research also provides some implications for human capital development and policy recommendations during organizational change.

  • Methods Showcase—Using PLSF-SEM in Business Communication Research

      Authors: Ned Kock
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a data analysis method that is widely used in business communication research, as well as research in many other fields, when scholars need to test complex models with multiple outcomes, interactions, or operations across different situations. To date, however, researchers have had to choose between using covariance-based SEM, and dealing with convergence problems; or composite-based SEM, and facing serious methodological issues. This article describes a way to combine strong aspects of both SEM types through PLSF-SEM. By utilizing this novel method, empirical researchers can employ several of the same tests traditionally used in covariance-based SEM, as well as new tests that rely on latent variable estimates, in a succinct and scholarly way. PLSF-SEM builds on partial least squares (PLS) algorithms to generate correlation-preserving factors; the F refers to it being factor-based, as opposed to composite-based. A primer on the use of PLSF-SEM in business communication research is provided, based on an illustrative model inspired by motivating language theory, and where simulated data was analyzed with the software WarpPLS.

Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
With more corporations incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) tools like social chatbots into their public communication practices, we explore optimal chatbot designs for organization-public relational outcomes. Our 2 × 2 × 2 factorial web experiment with eight custom-designed chatbots showed that communication strategies (verbal and non-verbal social cues such as emoji, memes, filler words, and response delay) had a significant impact (Cohen’s d = 0.536, standardized coefficient β = 0.438) on chatbot social conversation, the central antecedent to the investigated relational outcomes such as trust in business. Furthermore, the effect of chatbot social conversation is partially mediated by perceived organizational listening, highlighting the importance of listening and its related theories and practices in automated business communication.

Authors: Linjuan Rita Men, Yufan Sunny Qin, Alexis Bajalia Fitzsimmons, Marcia W. DiStaso, Eve Heffron
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Drawing insights from leadership, public relations, and communication literature, this study aimed to advance the theorization of leadership communication in disruptive crisis times. Specifically, leadership communication attributes of transparency, authenticity, empathy, and optimism (TAEO) were connected to a central internal communication outcome, employee trust. Through an online survey with 1,044 full-time employees working across diverse industry sectors in the U.S., this study also tested the potential mediators of feelings of uncertainty and psychological well-being. Structural equation modeling analysis results showed that CEO communication attributes of TAEO during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced employees’ feeling of uncertainty and enhanced their psychological well-being, which in turn, boosted employee trust toward the organization. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Authors: Jenilee Crutcher Williams, Michelle T. Violanti
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
Workplace bullying is a widespread issue with nearly 80 million people in the U.S. affected. Bystanders (i.e., non-bullied witnesses), who can adopt constructive or destructive behaviors, become integral to the trajectory of bullying issues. This study uses a sensemaking in organizations theoretical framework to examine how workplace bullying bystanders in academia make sense of their position. Thirty-seven in-depth interviews and grounded theory data analysis were used to answer the research question: How do people make sense of their role as bystanders throughout workplace bullying processes' An additional bystander role was found, the target-bystander (those who experience both perspectives over time). Participants’ prior target experience heavily influenced their sensemaking as a protective bystander throughout two themes that arose from the data: organizational identity and backstage sensemaking. These findings add to bystander conceptualization and aid business professionals (e.g., supervisors, trainers, and human resources) in developing well-rounded intervention strategies.

Trust: Mediating Roles of Perceived Altruism and Perceived Skepticism

Authors: Hyejoon Rim, Chuqing Dong, Yafei Zhang
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
This study uses online surveys administered in the US (N = 491), the UAE (N = 538), and South Korea (N = 548) to examine the associations between transparency strategies in CSR communication (i.e., participation, substantial information, and accountability) and the public’s evaluation of corporate trust. Additionally, it investigates the mediating roles of perceived altruism and skepticism toward CSR, while also exploring how these associations differ across the three selected countries. When testing a proposed model using the combined data from three countries (N = 1,577), our findings suggest that transparency strategies do not directly contribute to corporate trust. However, the participation aspect leads to corporate trust only through the influence of perceived altruism, while substantial information predicts a reduced level of CSR skepticism. Notably, results derived from country-specific data reveal intriguing patterns concerning accountability. In the US, accountability leads to altruism and fosters corporate trust, while in the UAE, it contributes to fostering corporate trust. However, in South Korea, it leads to increased skepticism. Conversely, in South Korea, substantial information contributes to building corporate trust. We discuss the implications of these findings from the unique institutional, social, and cultural perspectives of the countries studied.

Authors: Bulent Uluturk, Elgiz Yilmaz Altuntas, Pelin Hürmeriç
Abstract: International Journal of Business Communication, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a model to investigate the serial mediating roles of motivating language and psychological empowerment in the relationship between authentic leadership and work engagement. Using a sample of Turkish public hospital nurses, the findings indicate that authentic leadership positively affects work engagement directly and indirectly through motivating language and psychological empowerment. These results suggest that authentic leadership plays a pivotal role in creating working conditions that encourage motivating language and psychological empowerment, thus enhancing work engagement. This study is crucial given the growing exodus of Turkish healthcare workers as a result of increasing demands and a lack of job satisfaction. By integrating multiple theories (i.e., social exchange theory, motivating language theory, self-determination theory, and JD-R theory), the current study advances our knowledge of how authentic leadership influences employee work engagement.
