          • Authors: Göran Sonesson, Ieva Tomaševičiūtė
            Pages: 8 - 56
Abstract: Kognityvinė semiotika, pastaruoju metu įvairiose terpėse pristatoma kaip nauja humanitarinių ir socialinių mokslų paradigma, siekia sujungti kognityvinius mokslus su semiotika.
Keywords: Translations ; Semiotics of the Sensible: From Sensation to Intuition

            • Authors: Jacques Fontanille
              Pages: 57 - 81
Abstract: Classifying semiotic systems by the sensory channels employed to communicate them is simple, but specious: we thus fail to inquire into that which is actually semiotic about different types of sensory experience. In order to explicate their distinctive semiotic properties, these sensory types – touch, hearing, vision, olfaction, sensomotorics – need to be interrogated as phenomena. This way, each of the semiotic sensible modes shall be characterized by a specific field of presence. Schematic forms of the sensible thus obtained will give rise to a typology of sensible “bodies” – the envelope-body, the cavity-body, the point-body, the flesh-body – as well as to a typology of their “dynamics” (deformation, intimate movements etc.) and, finally, to a typology of semiotic “imprints” which these dynamics give rise to. Next, we should interrogate the possibilities of employing such typologies in concrete analyses. Our primary presupposition is that, in most cases, objects of analysis – text, painting, film, choreography etc. – are multisensory, and thus the task of their explanation involves an articulation of several sensible modes. This kind of articulation is decisive for interpretation. The case of artworks is very suggestive in this sense: for example, in a painting, the same “visual” substances of expression can give rise to both a figurative and iconic presentation, grounded in the typical field of visuality, and to a plastic dimension which brings forth other types of field – somatic, affective, symbolic, or mythical. This means that the articulation of sensible modes is the object of a second-order schematization – the schematization of a trans-sensible dimension, wherein intuition produces schematic forms that become expressions for contents not directly determined by sensory modes. The trans-sensible dimension activates syntheses of sensible modes; as we have learned from Kant, these syntheses are not of the conceptual order: they are activated in intuition, make use of the imagination, and are always contained in the sensible order which is both sensory and emotional.
Keywords: Articles ; On Materials Imitating Materials: Exploring Historical Decorated Papers

              • Authors: Ieva Rusteikaitė
                Pages: 82 - 117
Abstract: Crossing the boundaries of any one discipline, the article provides an overview of research into historical decorated paper conducted by the author over the last several years. Examples of this seemingly very specific, ephemeral material, considered as an imitation of other materials, applied in bindings of printed books and manuscripts during the 18th and 19th centuries, are presented as anonymous artifacts of the past, strikingly characterised by their own materiality and thus involving also the researcher’s senses. Besides a historical overview of the main techniques of paper decoration in Europe, the place of this applied decorative element in the three-dimensional structure of the handmade book is also explored. The second part of the paper addresses the relevant problem of ornament as a plastic discourse, which has so far received less attention in semiotic research. Through a closer analysis of a several samples of decorated paper, questions about the semantic structure of the ornament and its effects are raised. Finally, when placed in the context of certain habits, needs and interests of eighteenth-century European society, decorated paper and its ornamental language emerge as a multilayered object with a culturally defined meaning.
Keywords: Articles ; Diagrams as centerpiece for an enactivist epistemology

                • Authors: Michele Cerutti
                  Pages: 118 - 140
Abstract: In the present work I will examine two semiotic contributions, Legg (2021) and Caravà (2019) respectively, that explore the possible connection between semiotics and enactivism. Both attempt to offer a semiotic interpretation of the enactivist theory of perception and cognition, with the aim of showing how semiotics can contribute to the debate on mental representations. I will argue that Legg’s proposal, based on the Peircean concept of the dicisign, assigns to basic cognition conditions that are not necessary, from the point of view of enactivism. Caravà’s, in turn, assigns non-sufficient conditions. I will argue that if we want to semiotically interpret the enactivist framework the concept that describes necessary and sufficient conditions is that of the diagram.

                  • Authors: Audrey Moutat
                    Pages: 141 - 166
Abstract: Based on the various semiotic works devoted to the sensory world and to perception, this article proposes to retrace the generative path of sensory meaning from the immediate perception to its conceptualization. The aim is to highlight not only the constitutive dynamics of the semioses involved in this journey, but also the complex relationships involved in the emergence of sensitive signification. In order to do this, we will return to the constitutive principles of the plan of expression of perceptual semiosis and the dynamics that animate it, before determining their role in the articulation of sensory meaning. In this way, the concept of structure will prove decisive in uncovering a theory of knowledge of the sensible world. We shall see that, from icon to diagram, structure is the object of an abstractive operation that reconfigures not only phenomena and their tensive dynamics, but also the intentional variations of subjects that are functionally associated with them. In this respect, we will underline the importance of the elementary contrast in the classification of the perceived and the construction of the concept, understood as a prototypical example of the class. Finally, we will raise the profoundly unstable character of the perceptual semiosis and the influence games that constantly renegotiate the elementary meaning of the sensory.

                           Flights)

                    • Authors: Izabelė Skikaitė
                      Pages: 167 - 198
Abstract: Olga Tokarczuk’s fragmented novel Flights (Bieguni, 2007) encompasses various genres and themes that distinguish corporeality. Its analysis reveals how a corporeal isotopy of the content plane explains the expression plane, i.e., the novel’s composition. Therefore, this article contributes to the marginally explored research field in the semiotics of literature – the interaction between content semantics and poetics. In the novel, not only can various forms of the human body be found – such as bodies engaged in different modes of travel, sick bodies, and body specimens – but also contrasting corporeal ideologies that elucidate the connection between different fragments of the book. The article describes the novel‘s characters – pilgrims, runaways, and anatomists – and their relationship with movement and the body, revealing their worldview. Moreover, it solves the problem of matching the opposite conceptions of the body, the phenomenological and the mechanical, and addresses how the opposing characters’ attitudes can be integrated into the text’s semantic universe. The axiology of the protagonists is expressed by the category of integrity/disintegration. This, along with the corporeal relationships that repeat in different stories, discloses that Tokarczuk’s text functions as a particular body. Furthermore, it suggests a specific conception of the literary text.

                             of ‘Visual Form’

                      • Authors: Fred Andersson
                        Pages: 199 - 235
Abstract: The concept and nature of Form in linguistic as well as visual signs has been debated among several semioticians and art historians. Some notable analytical attempts have been put forward by Saussure, Hjelmslev, Vygotsky, and, regarding visual signs in particular, by Meyer Schapiro, Floch, Greimas, and the Groupe µ, among others. Greimas and Floch proposed a distinction between two levels of semiotic Form in visual representation, each being constitutive of a separate system of semiotic articulation: figurative language and plastic language. With arguments drawn from behavioural science, the interdisciplinary Groupe µ presented a different version of the same distinction as one between iconic and plastic signs. In this paper, I shall give a short outline of these and some further proposals, especially Meyer Schapiro’s view on the formal structure of pictures and visual signs, and his analysis of visual signifiers as ‘vehicles’ of spatial meaning. Schapiro’s account of the ‘image-sign’ will be presented as coloured by his socio-historical perspective and the empirical pragmatism of Peirce. Regarding the relationship between ‘iconic’ and ‘plastic’ meaning, Schapiro’s studies of Romanesque sculpture and non-figurative painting anticipate some observations later made by the Groupe µ. However, rather than attempting to defend any specific account of the nature of visual or plastic Form, a pluralistic position will be proposed here.
