Abstract: Welcome to the Journal of Biocommunication, the professional journal of the Association of Medical Illustrators and the BioCommunications Association. This JBC, issue 46-2, represents our second issue of the 2022 publishing year. I would like to thank our Management Board, our editors, our advisors, and our authors for their contributions to our success. Our first JBC Showcase features the amazing work of AMI member and UIC faculty member, John Daugherty. John was the recipient of the AMI's Lifetime Achievement Award at AMI's 2022 annual meeting in Des Moines, Iowa. In this Showcase, John shares a number of his award-winning images with us. Our second JBC Showcase features the award-winning natural science photography of Charles "Chip" Hedgcock, a medical/scientific photographer from Arizona. Chip has combined his love of the outdoors with more than 30 years of natural science photography. Chip was honored as the 2016 BioCommunications Association's Louis Schmidt Laureate. Our JBC Gallery features the Professional Category award winners from the Association of Medical Illustrators' 2022 annual meeting Salon. We think that you'll enjoy seeing these award-winning images and media. We appreciate the ongoing support from our JBC community around the world. In particular, we acknowledge the support of the Association of Medical Illustrators and the BioCommunications Association. It's a privilege to be the professional academic journal of these two organizations.

Abstract: This JBC Showcase features the award winning medical illustration of John Daugherty. John was the recipient of the Association of Medical Illustrators’ 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. His award was presented at the Awards Ceremony during the AMI’s 2022 annual meeting held in Des Moines, Iowa. The purpose of the Lifetime Achievement Award is to acknowledge and honor a medical illustrator who has been a Professional AMI Member for at least 30 continuous years, and whose life, work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the profession and fellow illustrators. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the AMI to an individual, reaching beyond the service awards, to recognize a special person who has enriched our lives and influenced our ideals.

  • The Age of Uncertainty

    • Authors: Richard Byrne
Abstract: Paul Valéry was a French, symbolist poet who once wrote, “The problem of our times is that the future is not what it used to be.” I think that’s where we are! Remember when you used to know how things were going to turnout' I mean, this is the way it was, and this is the way my mom was, and this is the way my grandma was, and I’m going to be like them. My view is that we create the future. It’s not already out there; we create it. It’s not out there just to be foretold; we make it up as we go along. What’s important about the future is not what’s coming; it’s what were doing now.

  • Breakthrough Thinking

    • Authors: Richard Byrne
Abstract: We’ve been talking about the computer age and whether or not it’s actually a real thing. I hope you realize by now, that it either is, or isn’t, depending on your own perspective. It really depends upon your attitude, your perception, what you see in the world, and the advantage you take of the opportunities that to come you. I think we’re living in an age of breakthrough. I think there are breakthroughs all around us. You all know about the technological ones, you know about the scientific ones. The question is, are we making the same kind of breakthroughs in our personal lives' Are you making breakthroughs at business, in education, in government, in your family, in your home' How do we prepare to do that'

  • Training Camp

    • Authors: Richard Byrne
Abstract: Have you ever been part of a championship season' There is nothing like it. You don’t have to be on the team, but have you ever signed up' Frequently, when a football team in the pros has been losing and begins to win, and people look around at the local bar, on the bus, or at work and they say, “The team won! What happened there' I don’t know.” Then the next week you say, “Hey, the team won again! I can’t believe that! Why, that team won twice, that’s amazing!” Then the tempo begins to build. It only takes one or two wins. After the third win, people start meeting at lunch. “Was that outrageous'! Did you see that third quarter' That was really great because the team won!” There’s this contagion, this disease called ‘Championship Fever,’ and it absolutely envelops us. It’s wildfire.

  • Championship Living in a Computer Age

    • Authors: Richard Byrne
Abstract: We live in the computer age; I’m absolutely sure of it. Earlier in this series, I hedged my bets and said, “Is it really real, and do you think so, and it’s up to you,” and so forth. I’m here to tell you now, we live in a computer age. Furthermore, we live in an age of breakthrough. There are lightening leaps, and quantum jumps being made in every aspect of human life right now. I am sure that you can learn to embrace this new momentum, in order to break through any barriers in your own life. You can find those old anchors to your past, you can let go of them, and you can break through to a new unanticipated plateau.
