  • COMMEMORATING NATIONAL DAYS IN ADVERTISEMENTS IN A "NEW TURKEY": IMAGES OF
           EVERYDAY NATIONALISM

    • Authors: Canan Neşe KINIKOĞLU
Abstract: This study examines how Republican national days are remembered in advertisements in a “new Turkey”, where secularist-Kemalist nationalism and its historiography have drifted away from their central position of power under the Justice and Development Party rule. Focusing on the post-2012 period in Turkey, when regulations on national days were changed, it carried out a content analysis of 27 advertisements, enlisted on the YouTube Ads Leaderboard, about Republican national days. There are three important findings in this study. First, in most of the advertisements national days are remembered through images of everyday nationalism that purport an idea of truthfulness. Second, in advertisements which use images of the past, these days are redefined with reference to Kemalist official historiography. Third, these are reinforced by the shared emotions for the nation and its symbols. Accordingly, the study argues that in a “new Turkey”, advertisements about national days are political arenas, where the nation is redefined, appropriated, made ordinary and popularized beyond the political orientation and polarizations of the corporations.

  • EVERYDAY LIFE AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NATIONALIST SUBJECT

    • Authors: Tayfun YILDIRIM
Abstract: This study discusses the construction of the nationalist subject based on the theories of everyday life and nationalism. Nationalist historiography takes the elements that make up the nation as given. In order to discuss the construction of the nationalist subject, it is necessary to break away from the essentialist narrative of nation. The nation is reproduced every day by daily practices. Rituals, symbols, and discourses construct the nationalist subject in everyday life. This study seeks to explain the construction of the nationalist subject via Louis Althusser's theory of ideology and Michael Billig's banal nationalism theory. Theories of nationalism generally point out that nationalism is imposed on individuals through indoctrination. Therefore, this study tries to indicate that subjects are both the product and the perpetrator of nationalism. Finally, it aims to address the commitment to national identity based on Judith Butler's theory of subordination.

  • NATION OF FOOD, FOOD OF NATION: LOOKING FOR EVERYDAY NATIONALISM IN
           MASTERCHEF TURKEY

    • Authors: Elifcan ÇORUK
Abstract: This study aims to examine Masterchef Turkey TV show as a mediator within the framework of the daily relationship between nationalism and food. Everyday nationalism argues that nationalism permeates into routine habits, thus the nation is reproduced daily and unconsciously. This argument intersects the daily routine of cooking and eating with discussions of how nationalism is reproduced. This intersection also shows that warm nationalism takes place in the present, and in this respect, it has become ordinary in daily life. From this point of view, the theoretical background was first examined in the study, and then the data obtained from the 2019 season of the Masterchef Turkey show were evaluated at the intersection of daily nationalism and food relations. The data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis method within the scope of the study.

  • NATIONALIST ROMANTICISM: POPULAR NATIONALISM AS A MASCULINE PASSION

    • Authors: İlker ÖZDEMİR; S. Yetkin IŞIK
Abstract: Despite the fact that nationalism is a political construct which is builded from above/political elites, these constructs don't always overlap reality, theory doesn't always overlap practice and how nationalism is received from the society and with what dynamics it is internalized, adapted to actions or how its continuity is ensured cannot be kept under control of the states as pointed out by several thinkers who wrote about the subject of nationalism. This diversity of nationalism within a single society and variability of nationalism according to the conjuncture are also proof of this uncontrollability. In this article, populist nationalism is discussed not as an ideology, but as a discourse and the emotional tendencies triggered by this discourse. Nationalist romanticism is the expression of these emotional tendencies, and this form of romanticism includes interconnected elements such as masculinity, anti-intellectualism and violence/militarism. And in this article, romantic nationalist tendencies are discussed in the context of masculine centrism, anti-intellectualism and violence/militarism. Nationalist romanticism is based on masculine passions that are shaped by the effort to be strong and appear strong. While violence and militarism are sublimated as masculine values; intellectual, ethical and aesthetic efforts are devalued which are seen as the loss of power/masculinity within these framework. As a result, the sublimation and highlighting of masculine values negatively affects the formation of a well-organized civilized society.

  • DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPH IN THE AGE OF TRUTH: THINKING 'POST-TRUTH' AND
           'POST-DOC' TOGETHER

    • Authors: Alper ERÇETİNGÖZ
Abstract: This study aims to determine how the documentary photography, whose objective is to 'reveal the truth', is positioned in an era where images are produced by using digital technology and 'truth becomes unimportant'. It is aimed to analyze the new conceptions of documentary photography, based upon the discussions of 'reality' in post-modernist photography and to question the current function of documentary photography by tracing the 'post-doc' photography practice which has replaced the traditional approach. In the analysis carried out by following the question, 'Is photography still a documentary in post-truth are'', it was observed that a new understanding of reality emerged, in which fiction became immanent to truth, and that the post-doc approach, which bases its philosophy on this new reality, uses its own fictional reality instead of the 'power of truth' to influence people. In this context, it has been understood that today, documentary photography continues to exist not by the 'truth', but by a constructed version of the reality that it claims to be stronger than itself.

  • CHILDHOOD AT THE BIRTH OF CINEMA: EARLY CINEMA AS A VISUAL THRESHOLD

    • Authors: Ebubekir DÜZCAN
Abstract: This article discusses the early cinema period around its relationship with childhood. The period known as the birth of cinema or early world cinema between the years 1895-1920 is in a strong interaction with both child images and child audiences. On the other hand, this period can be considered as an important threshold within the historical context of childhood. The internationally acclaimed children's star series have won the admiration of not only child audiences but also adult audiences. The fact that movies featuring child stars appeal to both children and adults means that the categories of "childhood" and "adulthood" are getting closer. This is based on the common viewing experience of children and adults in the same movie theater. As a result, "adult" features may appear in child stars, while many adult stars have "childlike" features.

  • TURKISHNESS IN ADVERTISEMENTS: POLITICAL POTENCY STUCK IN LIMINALITY

    • Authors: Onur ÖZGER
Abstract: This study aims to discuss which discourses and signifiers surround the image of Turkishness in the advertisements, which is circulated as a cultural commodity and commercialised as well. It will further explore the ways, in which the representations of “us” and “them” duality are presented in the advertising discourses in the reconstruction of the Turkish nation as a political identity. The study concentrates on the advertisements as one of the daily communication mediums of nationalism, with specific references to two separate advertisements scripted with nationalist narratives: Yapı Kredi Bank’s advertisement World’s Most Innovative Bank Yapı Kredi (2018) and Turkish Airlines’ advertisement When You Dream (2014). The reason for specifically choosing these two advertisements is, one of them attempts to determine the outsider “other” while the latter intends to establish the insider “other”. Furthermore, the overarching motive in the choice of these two brands is that both keep a special place in the development and representation of the national capital. While Yapı Kredi is the first private bank of Turkey, THY is the only national flag carrier airline in the country. Against this backdrop, the study will initially examine the national identity and Turkishness at the intersection of nationalism and popular culture as the theoretical background, and then it will investigate the discourses and signifiers circulated by the two selected advertisements through the critical discourse analysis.

  • EVERYDAY CONSTRUCTION OF TURKISH NATIONALISM IN NEWS DISCOURSES: THE
           MURDER OF SEVAG BALIKÇI

    • Authors: Bengi BEZİRGAN-TANIŞ
Abstract: This study examines how Turkish nationalism is constructed and reproduced within the discursive sphere through its re-encounter with ‘the Armenian issue’. Focusing on the murder of Sevag Balıkçı on April 24, 2011, it aims to examine the discursive strategies through which this confrontation is presented in national newspapers every day. The critical discourse analysis method was used to determine how the three national newspapers selected in the study covered this incident. According to the findings of the research, the ethnic origin of the victim, his martyrdom status, and his sacrifice for the nation were determined as the prominent themes in the media representations of the case. Therefore, this study discusses how nationalist discourses could be included in news discourses daily by constantly implying and reminding of nationhood. In this regard, it has been revealed that national newspapers positioned the Balıkçı murder in a way that brings out the discursive, representational, and exclusionary aspects of Turkish nationalism by isolating the murder of Balıkçı from its historical and political background and breaking its connection with ‘the Armenian question’.

  • EXPERIENCING EVERYDAY NATIONALISM IN THE CITY: KILIS IN THE PROJECTION OF
           SYRIAN FORCED MIGRATION

    • Authors: Duygu ALTINOLUK; Bayram KOCA
Abstract: We can state that the actors and emphasis on time in nationalism have changed along with the debates on everyday nationalism that started in the 1990s and continue to increase today. Thus, it is possible to say that nationalism was designed by ordinary people in everyday life. Therefore, nationalism has become something that is performed daily by ordinary people. While nationalism seeks an “enemy” for itself by grounding itself on the distinction of “us” and “them”, the enemy it finds acts as the glue that holds the nation together and provides the dynamism of survival. While the enemy of one period was the communists, following 1980 and especially in the 1990s, it was the Kurds. After 2011, on the other hand, with the Syrian refugees, we can state that the new other is the Syrians. In this study, everyday nationalism performance against the refugees in Kilis, which has the highest refugee population, will be examined. Therefore, the study which is designed as an autoethnographic research analyzes the performances of everyday nationalism in Kilis by focusing on how anti-refugee opposition is experienced by the researchers.

  • REPRESENTATION OF THE “DÖNER MURDERS” IN THE GERMAN MEDIA: THE
DIALECTIC BETWEEN NEW-RACISM AND “EXTREME” GERMAN RACISM

    • Authors: Sevil ÖZÇALIK DUMANOĞULLARI; Selin KUL
Abstract: This article will examine the relationship between German daily racism and National Socialist Underground (NSU) activities, which are described as ‘extreme’, based on the representation in the German media of the murders committed by the NSU, which operated without being revealed between 2000 and 2011. Considering the general characteristics of the far-right social movements on the rise in Europe, it is shown that the media encourages daily racist discourse against immigrants. In this respect, discourses that are described as ‘extreme’ have come to a point where they define the boundaries of the mainstream with the daily representations of racism in the media. Based on this, the claim of this article is that the coverage of the NSU murders in the German media reproduces the ‘new racist’ argument based on the cultural imcompability that has started to be effective in German social and political life since the 2000’s and the association of immigrants with crime. This reproduction when it comes to anti-immigration, blurred the boundaries of ‘extreme’ and the mainstream, giving an organization like NSU the opportunity to act without being exposed for years.

  • CONTEMPORARY ART AND THE CRITIQUE OF EVERYDAY NATIONALISM

    • Authors: Erdem ÇOLAK
Abstract: In discussions of everyday nationalism, bottom-up readings of nationalism that take into account human activities have brought a remarkable dynamism to the study of both nationalism and everyday life. However, since most of the studies on everyday nationalism focus on how ordinary people construct their national identities in everyday life, they do not sufficiently address the relations of production and distribution of critiques of nationalism produced in everyday life. This paper will discuss some artworks created by different artists from different countries around the world by intervening in national symbols and the critical perspectives they bring to national identity, national history, and national policies of states. I argue that artworks produced in this way disrupt the rhythm of everyday life and make controversial interventions into ethical, aesthetic, legal, and political spheres.

  • ORIENTALIST IMAGERY AND GAZE IN THE FILMS IL BAGNO TURCO, ZENNE DANCER,
           AND AUF DER ANDEREN SEITE

    • Authors: Sanem PEKER DAĞLI; Zeynep ÖZARSLAN
Abstract: Orientalism still provides a rich literature to explore the representations of the Orient from a Western perspective as well as the manifest and latent power relations designating the Orientalist imagery. Following Edward Said’s theorization of Orientalism, this paper examines Orientalist imagery, iconography, and gaze from a sexual difference perspective in Turkey’s cinema on the trajectory of the films Il Bagno Turco aka Hamam, Zenne Dancer aka Zenne, and Auf Der Anderen Seite aka Yaşamın Kıyısında. The paper discusses the representations of the West(ern) and East(ern) characters, cities, spaces and culture and Orientalist gaze in the selected films from a sexual difference perspective. Semiotic film analysis is implemented as the methodology, deploying Roland Barthes’s conceptualizations on semiotics as a supporting component. The analysis reveals that the visual and narrative structures of the selected films are ornated with both manifest and latent Orientalist elements, the leading of which are romanticism and homoeroticism of the Oriental.

  • REIMAGINING THE REFUGEE IMAGE: ALTERNATIVE REFUGEE APPEARANCES ON
           INSTAGRAM

    • Authors: Merve ALÇAYIR
Abstract: Dominant representation regime has been presenting refugees as a “universal subject”, and refugeeness as an experience characterized by poverty, victimization and neediness. However, recent qualitative studies focusing on refugee experience have revealed that forced migration is not experienced homogenously, as mass media and international migration regime try to present it, but the experience varies depending on the social, political, economic and cultural conditions in which migration takes place. Similarly, media does not always present refugees as passive victims, fleeing violence and persecution; but sometimes as political subjects, for example as happened in the aftermath of the Second World War. Drawing on the idea that the Internet offers marginalised groups a space to reframe the narratives around their experiences, this study analyses the refugee images produced and shared on Instagram by people with forced migration experience. Research focuses on whether visual narratives produced based on lived experience offer an opportunity to subvert or erode the dominant cliches. Results suggest that although the alternative refugee images produced by refugees on Instagram are still limited in number, these posts make different aspects of the refugee experience visible and provide an optimistic framework for positive change in the long run.
