  • Educating to corporeity in DaD: the formative and expressive potential of
           the body in movement

    • Abstract: The present contribution aims to reflect on the fundamental importance of the promotion of corporeal education in educational contexts, in the light of adoption of distance teaching, due to the current and dramatic pandemic emergency. In rethinking and redesigning teaching, increasingly digitised, the fundamental question refers to the impossibility of thinking of a contemporary teaching that does not make use of technology and, at the same time, make use of a technology linked to the traditional principles of pedagogy and teaching.Research was conducted on a sample of 78 children between the ages of 9 and 11, first through a bodily meaningful approach to promote the involvement of online students, resilience, motivation and then through the administration of the questionnaire Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (Carraro, Young & Robazza, 2008), to confirm the role and importance of practice and pleasure in motor and sports activities. It is necessary to think of new models of teaching, mediated by technology and corporeity, which becomes a playful educational medium that allows education, logical and analytical thought to be able to best deploy its potential (MIUR, 2018).

  • Emergency Distance Learning in the Italian University

    • Abstract: The suspension of face-to-face teaching activities, due to the pandemic emergency, led universities to rearrange their teaching strategies using online learning environments and video-conference tools as a temporarily replacement of classrooms, without an accurate attention to training strategies. In this scenario, there is a need to reconsider current practices in order to determine the appropriate development strategies of academic policies to address the future of innovation of higher education. The purpose is to develop a training system that could adequately integrate users’ needs, capitalise good practices and provide a boost in innovation caused by the distance learning experience. A right step in this direction is to develop a higher education context marked by high level of learning environments’ hybridisation that could flexibly answer users’ needs and meet increasing demand for professionalism in the work marketplace. In this paper, a documentary research of university Emergency Distance Learning practices is presented. The aim is to draw the profile of current situation in order to reflect on future development trajectories of higher education.

  • The academic use of plagiarism software in Physical Therapy educational
           research: a case study

    • Abstract: Recently, cases of plagiarism in education have been on the rise with the underlying causes of their appearance being numerous. Due to the large extent of this phenomenon, specialised software has been developed and is available for users to check the presence or absence of plagiarism. The purpose of this paper is to study cases of plagiarism in education, as well as the available plagiarism software. Also, this case study presents a practical example of the implementation of the control process using plagiarism software, as well as its results, in an already published article. This case study points out the importance of performing a further quality control to those parts of the text where a textual coincidence was spotted by the plagiarism detection software.

  • Digital environments as third spaces: analyses of simple artefacts in the
           rooms of the MOdE

    • Abstract: With the spread of digital environments that allow the user to design and produce contents, we have asked ourselves whether digital museums can be considered as ‘third spaces’ in which it is possible to exhibit, research, aggregate and re-elaborate, in a shared narrative, materials and experiences coming from different contexts. Conceiving the digital museum as a third space of contamination between formal and informal, presence and distance, real and digital presupposes the rethinking of the functions of the museum itself, capable of connecting both the demands for safeguards and those of accessibility to the cultural heritage, for an access to knowledge that is increasingly open. Starting from these premises, this contribution references the digital museum Museo Officina dell’Educazione (MOdE) as a third space by specifically analysing the digital settings produced by students of the upper secondary schools and by university students.

  • Educational audiovisual text design: empirical evidence and new research
           perspectives

    • Abstract: The article presents a systematic analysis of international literature concerning the design of educational audiovisual texts at university level. The theme appears very important in light of the extensive use of these cognitive artefacts in flipped, blended,Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) teaching processes. This is even more important in the era of health emergency that has led to the use of audiovisual text as the main teaching medium at school and university. The aim of the work is to provide a contribution to research on educational technologies for the purpose of identifying new instructional design principles that support multimedia learning. The analysis highlighted new research directions, such as the significant role of the camera point of view in learning complex manual procedures, new design elements on the ways of representing the teacher and his/her communicative attitude, and the increasingly close relationship between educational sciences and neuroscience. The result may be useful, on the one hand, as a stimulus for an in-depth study of the new lines of research identified, by researchers on educational technologies, and on the other, for a more informed evidence-based use of audiovisual texts in teaching practices.

  • Blended learning design for teaching innovation: university
           teachers’ perceptions

    • Abstract: In the Italian university context, almost all universities offer blended degree courses, digital environments and e-learning systems. In many cases, dedicated centres also provide technical support and, less frequently, teaching and methodological support. The development of digital learning environments often does not correspond to the spread of an effective culture of educational innovation in university courses.The research examined the experiences of instructional design among 44 university teachers of blended degree courses at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The analysis focused on teachers’ level of satisfaction and the processes of teaching innovation linked to the blended methodology, investigating also the possible criticalities and strengths related to the process of (re)design and innovation. The activities of training and design for teachers contributed to the dissemination of good teaching practices and professional development.In line with what emerged from the research on blended learning, it seems necessary to build a framework for the adoption and implementation of ‘blended learning’ strategies at the institutional level, starting from the construction of a concrete agenda setting shared between the actors of the innovation process.

  • Design for learning in the third space: opportunities and challenges

    • Abstract: Many educational agents offer paths that allow school to turn itself into a ‘third space’. Caritas Ambrosiana, based on a ‘pedagogy of facts’, proposes interventions to promote soft skills in schools. This non-formal education agency committed Research Center about Media Education, Innovation and Technology (CREMIT) of Catholic University for a project to improve their school programme and training effectiveness. We chose the participatory action research paradigm to verify how to design an educational path by applying third-space principles in the school context and how digital media can be embedded into the practice to enable a more porous exchange of experiences and expertise between students, educators and the school curriculum.The accompanying plan was designed on the basis of the initial questionnaire data analysis: sociomateriality was the main focus because it was considered by Caritas educators as one of the least important elements to include in the design process. The second reason is the need to rethink on-site training formats to face the challenges of the Covid-19 emergency.As expected, after the training intervention, sociomateriality had a significant growth in the design practices. The other third-space pedagogy elements (peering, experiential orientation, motivation, pleasure of making together) are maintained and reinforced, thanks to digital literacy.

  • Teaching digital skills to future teachers: a distance workshop experience

    • Abstract: In the school year 2020–2021, the Covid-19 pandemic imposed distance learning (in Italian, the DAD acronym is used). Therefore, the Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences of the University of Perugia has proposed an innovative programme for the training of future teachers by developing a distance learning laboratory focusing coding and computational thinking applied to teaching in kindergarten and primary school. During the educational technologies laboratory, held by Prof. Floriana Falcinelli, the students experimented coding both without computer (unplugged) and using the Scratch software. The programmed animations and video games were in direct connection with the Lifelong Kindergarten of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where Scratch was created. The highly innovative aspects concerned both the proposed contents and the dimension of interaction and collaboration as entirely developed in online environments.

  • Visual communication in research: a third space between science and art

    • Abstract: Ample scientific literature recognises the role of visual thinking in the constructive process of ideas and mental images and the function of visual intelligence in the communicative processes. Starting from the sectoral studies, we have turned our attention to the visual communication of the results of scientific research, relating it to some characteristics of artistic communication to find a shared ground, that is, a third space inhabited by common languages and competencies. In so doing, we have overcome the traditional antinomy between humanists and scientists, starting instead from the results of a recent study that has shown how such an opposition does not find real confirmation in the sector of science communication. We have thus analysed three case studies (graphical abstract, augmented reality, audiovisual documentation) on the grounds of a 10-year long experience of research in the field of visual communication (iconography and iconology, art teaching, video research) to acknowledge visual thinking and graphical/artistic competencies, situated in the third space between didactics and art, a fundamental role in the formation of a scientist and a researcher.

  • Distance education and cultural heritage: transformations in the
           post-literacy age. The case of MArTA

    • Abstract: The age of literacy, also known as modern age, was based on vision, regulation and control, whereas the post-literacy age, characterised by the advent of digital technologies, is based on an immersive, multisensorial and participatory approach. The ICT provide new opportunities to rethink and redesign the ways in which cultural heritage has been imagined and enjoyed. Participation and connection, on the one hand, and personalisation, recontextualisation and immersive interaction, on the other hand, are the key elements of the change that is involving cultural heritage and related institutions, including education. After analysing the central role of media literacy in digital humanities, the article focuses on a best practice from the MArTA Museum in Taranto and on innovative strategies to discover and launch new educational opportunities through heritage. The general aim is to design online and offline educational opportunities in order to revive local cultural traditions and generate cultural, social and economic opportunities.

  • : third spaces meet pastoral contexts

    • Abstract: Media education is a cultural framework that can be applied in different contexts: schools, families, informal educational environments, along with pastoral work. With Pope Francis’ championing, there is an increasing need to bridge pastoral care and the media, which can become new important forms of proximity and open opportunities to connect and assume responsibility towards others. Our aim is to understand how parishes can think of themselves as third spaces. The paper tackles this question through the exploration of the initiative Aperto per ferie. The initiative was created to enable professionals to experience the summer camp activities despite the Covid-19 pandemic, finding new ways of aggregation in pastoral youth clubs and taking advantage of digital community meetings. It developed a digital space to promote a unifying experience. With digital technologies, the boundaries of the community are redrawn. The correspondence with the territory (of the parish and the diocese) is no longer pre-determined. A community with porous edges is making its way and is more open and permeable to contributions coming from outside, and perhaps more accessible, even by those who do not frequent parish environments.

    • Abstract: The didactic-performative experience at a distance, centred on the body in action of the training laboratories activated at the University of Study Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan and the University of Study Suor Orsola Benincasa of Naples, encouraged, through the exercise of ‘simplex property’ of the separation of functions, the crossing of borders of ‘presence/distance’, using Didactics at Distance (DAD) as an opportunity to search in everyone the potential patrimony of the action, able to go beyond the classical meanings of interaction, relationship, experience, emotion, through an effort of imagination and simulation, which even interaction with the machine can stimulate.The research work recalls the ambivalence and the plurality of interpretative keys of the teaching experience and includes its analogies with the performing arts.Starting from the ‘stage presence’, as a scenic ‘bios’ and source of energy, a third energetic space has been investigated, which can amplify the relational dimension. A space which the biologist Sheldrake defines as ‘morphogenetic field’ is the one in which it is possible, through the activation of an empathic climate, to make all the processes of emotional sharing, expressive rediscovery and acquisition of awareness sprout, making the experience of DAD a formative and transformative one.

  • Exploring school levels of digital readiness in pandemic time

    • Abstract: COVID-19 lockdown measures adopted by governments in March 2020 have impacted our society as never happened before. The school system was not an exception. Interventions to allow students for distance learning through the support of ‘old’ (e.g. TV) or ‘new’ media (e.g. digital platforms) have been promoted, involving millions of students and teachers worldwide. This paper presents a study on school leaders and teachers’ perceptions on the school levels of digital readiness through the comparison of their views before and during the lockdown. The participation in the EU project DETECT provided the context for exploring the school levels of digital readiness. Data were collected belonging to two different phases and allowing to investigate teachers’ perceptions in using technologies for remote teaching. The school is living an unprecedent period where dramatic experiences are also disclosing new opportunities. Our study found that school had a strategy before the COVID-19 emergency, but it was too focused on infrastructures’ acquisition, while the development of competences on the side of both teachers and students requires an investment in long-term training, up to the point of reshaping the current teaching practices and also planning for interdisciplinary educational activities addressed to the students.

  • Sudden Shift to Distance Learning: Analysis of the Didactic Choices Made
           by Italian Secondary School Teachers in the First COVID-19 Lockdown

    • Abstract: Following China, the next severely affected country due to the COVID-19 epidemic was Italy. In consideration of the increasing number of infections, the government via the Ministerial Decree (DPCM) of March 2020 established various restrictive measures for the entire Italian territory, even involving the closure of schools. Hence, for the first time, the Italian school system had to adopt distance learning.The mixed methods research in this context involves a non-probabilistic sample of 6,384 secondary school teachers answering a questionnaire issued from 5 August to 1 September 2020, and 30 telephone interviews were conducted among those who had made themselves available during the compilation of the questionnaire to be contacted for the qualitative part of the research.Therefore, the answers collected in the report1 relay what happened in the second quarter of the school year from 2019 to 2020, the period of the first lockdown in Italy, through which we try to particularly understand the didactic activities implemented by teachers, the main decision maker of the choices, the assessment methods, the autonomy of teachers in managing distance learning and the teachers’ training needs.

  • Criteria for distance learning at the time of Coronavirus

    • Abstract: The Coronavirus pandemic, forcing all schools and universities to exclusively activate distance learning (DL), has triggered an unprecedented innovative process. E-learning had remained a niche resource for a few innovators, experts and enthusiasts; but, with the forced DL due to Covid-19, teachers of all levels had to engage in a new form of teaching and in a new didactic paradigm. In this scenario, some criteria can be usefully identified – transmediality, interactivity, active learning and enhancement of experience – capable of guiding the didactic action and directing teachers towards a larger and more effective online teaching. These criteria, tested in an exceptional health situation, can be useful even beyond the emergency phase in view of a radical didactic renewal, even in classes taken live.

  • Online computer science workshops for educators in higher education during
           Covid-19: challenges and opportunities of a forced distance learning

    • Abstract: This study focuses on a course belonging to the University of Bologna’s bachelor’s degrees ‘Expert in Social and Cultural Education’ and ‘Educator in Childhood Social Services’ called ‘Computer Science Lab–based course’, which aims to develop digital competences necessary for the educational profession. Before COVID-19, this face-to-face compulsory workshop-based course consisted of nine parallel teachings with different programmes and teachers. Due to the impossibility of providing regular lessons, teachers have been forced to revise their working methods by using different distance learning strategies. This paper aims to offer an understanding of the situation by analysing teachers’ and students’ perceptions collected through questionnaires in relation to the following aspects: most used and effective teaching strategies; technical, communicative and relational difficulties encountered by teachers and students; aspects related to distance learning methods and perception of the usefulness of the course for the educational profession.

  • Impact of the Digital Literacy Courses Taken by the Prospective Social
           Studies Teachers by Distance Learning on Digital Citizenship Skills

    • Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of the digital literacy course taught to undergraduates with the cooperation of the Council of Higher Education (CHE) and Anadolu University on the ‘digital citizenship skills’ of social sciences teachers. In this context, 30 prospective social sciences teachers who received digital literacy training participated in the study, which employed criterion sampling, a purposive sampling technique. The study followed a pre-test and post-test uncontrolled quasi-experimental model. The digital literacy course process by distance learning covered eight weeks. At the beginning and the end of the digital literacy course, a ‘digital citizenship’ scale was applied to the prospective teachers. In research results, a significant positive difference was detected between the pre-test and post-test scores of prospective teachers obtained from the whole of the digital citizenship skills scale. Between pre-test and post-test scores of ‘digital communication’, ‘digital ethics’, and ‘critical thinking’ sub-dimensions of the digital citizenship scale, a significant difference was not detected. On the other hand, a positive significant difference was detected between scores from its digital skills, digital participation, digital rights and responsibilities, and digital commerce sub-dimensions. Similarly, between digital security points, which is another sub-dimension of the study, a significant difference was detected, though this difference was found to be negative. In this context, it is proposed that similar training should be made more common, more functional subjects in digital topics that teachers do not know should be the focus rather than those prospective teachers are expected to know, some changes regarding digital security must be implemented in institutions that teach the digital literacy course with distance learning and that these should enrich this subject further.

  • Distance relationships and educational fragilities: A Student Voice
           research in digital third spaces

    • Abstract: What impact did distance learning and education have on the most fragile students during the COVID-19 emergency' How is ‘educational fragility’ perceived by teachers and school educators, and how did this concept change during the school closure' How did children and young people perceive their remote learning experiences' The pandemic scenario forced to switch from face-to-face to distance educational relationships, triggering new fragilities and increasing digital inequalities. Therefore, in the digital environment of third space, a qualitative Student Voice research was conducted to collect students’, teachers’ and educators’ perceptions of remote schooling via semi-structured interviews. The study was implemented with working university students and school-going students with special educational needs, aged between 7 and 13 years, pursuing the teacher preparation aspect in the field of social justice. Preliminary results show that distance relationships fostered students’ self-regulated learning and awareness of their own learning processes; however, only in-presence schooling is experienced as a real ‘living-learning space.’ All these aspects and especially the practitioners’ awareness of the outcomes of distance education open up a new perspective towards an ecological theory of educational fragility, which could contribute to define new in-depth knowledge-construction tools in support of the education practice.
