  • Communication, Semiosis, and Living Systems

In this paper, I analyze the process of semiosis emergence from the semiotic point of view to clarify the implications it may have for the field of communication studies regarding the extension of its anthropocentric boundaries. The research is based on Peirce's semiotics and the theoretical framework of cybersemiotics, a transdisciplinary theory of communication, cognition, information, and signification.

  • Bodily regimes and meaning production in Bolsonaro’s visual discourse: a
           sociosemiotic perspective

Abstract In this paper, we analyze the semiotic strategies through which Jair Bolsonaro’s body is represented in his Instagram profile. In order to do that, we build upon Landowski’s elliptic semiotic square, through which we display Bolsonaro’s different bodily postures and lifestyles. The diagram shows four bodily regimes through which the body of the current Brazilian president is portrayed: 1) the military body, 2) the buffoonish body, 3) the institutional body, 4) the popular body. The results show that the institutional body is the least present, while the other three reinforce Bolsonaro’s non-political identity and anti-establishment discourse.

  • Collective intelligence semiotics in the Stranger Things series

This study analyzes the Netflix’s original series, Stranger Things, as an emerging collective intelligence concept. For this purpose, we conducted a semiotic analysis through three inductive and interpretative stages: using the Transmedia Intertextual System, identifying pre-existing references, and analyzing reactions in the fandom universe. The research found the production as a transmedia intertextual masterpiece that points towards an emphasized canonization of the media-nostalgic content and a sequential performance of the collective cultural memory.

  • Netflix TV fiction series showrunners’ interaction and communication
           strategies on Twitter

Abstract This paper studies the techniques used by showrunners to communicate with their audience on the social network Twitter. Following a literature review of the television landscape resulting from streaming services and social media, the techniques, content, and audiovisual-textual elements present in the Twitter activity of the showrunners of original Netflix TV series are quantitatively and qualitatively examined. In spite of the heterogeneous activity, the findings indicate repeated use of the TV series’ hashtag, informative/promotional tweets, and external links.

  • Youth sound consumption practices, between big platforms and the radio
           ecosystem: the case of Colombia-Spain

Abstract This paper presents an analysis and correlation of youthful sound consumption practices from the comparative specificities of Colombian and Spanish university ecosystems. Through a quantitative-qualitative methodology applied to a sample of 160 subjects, a generational cut pattern is confirmed both in the use of devices and in the type of content demanded. Likewise, the emergence of a hybrid consumer in whose digital sonosphere contents from global platforms, radio and podcasts coexist, and who is interested in the offer of the own radio ecosystem is outlined.

  • The Myth of Romantic Love in the journalistic account of femicides of
women of legal age in Colombia

Abstract This article seeks to demonstrate the role played by the Colombian written press in the construction of the social narrative on the femicide of adult women in the country, through the identification of the dominant macrostructure in more than 1 000 journalistic products from more than 20 local and national newspapers. The sample, which was taken over three years, was subjected to a content analysis that showed that the dominant macrostructure is neither the understanding of femicide as a social phenomenon, nor the dissemination of the antifemicide law in Colombia, but the Myth of Romantic Love as a discursive element present in most of the cases published in the national press.

  • The other faces of the prosumer: a review of the foundational concepts of
           pro-am (professional amateur) and maker

Abstract The concept of prosumer, with four decades since it was coined by Alvin Toffler, has remained the most prevalent conceptual term in studies on consumption-production. However, different concepts that add nuance to the idea of prosumer have been appearing throughout, at least, two decades. Thus, the objective of this work is to carry out a review of the heuristic elements of two relevant, and considered foundational, concepts in this area, to extend the terminological range in this field of studies: the pro-am and maker concepts.

           America: new opportunities

Abstract The paper values the potential of open data as an opportunity for the development of peaceful and inclusive societies. Studies the Latin American infomediary sector, in the context set by the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, through the DEPUC analysis (Description, Participation, Use and Characteristics) of 35 cases: the result is the characterization of the contribution of these products to governance and the participation and empowerment of citizens as factors of development of marked transnational relevance and Latin American cooperation.

  • Instant messaging as an informative source in organizational
communication: WhatsApp Business in Mexico and Spain

Abstract WhatsApp is the most used messaging service in Mexico and Spain. This research is innovative in evaluating the implementation and interaction mechanisms of WhatsApp Business, a specific version of the app that has been created for companies. From a sample made up of 200 companies, presented here is a comparative study of both countries. The results show a low level of implementation and significant deficiencies in dialogic development. Hence, the need to adapt to the usual spaces of citizen participation is identified.

  • Mexican digital journalism studies: two decades of scattered research

This article analyzes the evolution of Mexican digital journalism studies. To achieve this goal, it carries out a systematic review of the empirical research on this country’s digital journalism developed between 2000 and 2020. Identifying four dominant research lines (hypertextuality and interactivity, digitization and technological convergence, role performance and business models), it exposes the continuity deficit of each one of them and the scattered nature of the studies that make up this research subfield.

  • Spanish cinema in the Netflix catalog: a diversity perspective

Abstract The arrival of the multinational Netflix has had a strong impact in all markets. This article analyses the diversity of its catalog in Spain using the results of two catalog stills taken in November 2018 and July 2019. In addition, these data are compared with those of the main international SVOD platforms operating in Spain (HBO, Amazon Prime Video and Rakuten TV) and with those of the platforms of Spanish origin (Movistar+, Filmin and FlixOlé). The work draws conclusions that are not very encouraging regarding the diversity of Spanish cinema in the Netflix catalog.

  • Content characterization of Latin American film productions on Netflix: a
           Bolivian perspective

Abstract We study international film flows between Bolivia and Latin America to explore the lack of Bolivian content on Netflix and its limited presence in other SVOD platforms. We characterize Netflix originals, third-party content, and recent Bolivian films, and develop a thematic analysis of their synopsis and genre description, completed with the results of a survey on the Bolivian consumption of streaming content. We identify common patterns in Netflix content and show how it differs from the more nationally minded Bolivian cinematic tradition. Our results point to a homogenizing effect SVOD platforms like Netflix might have on film productions.

  • From São Paulo to Seoul: Netflix’s strategies in peripheral
           markets

Abstract Aiming to examine Netflix’s strategies in its global expansion and based on the debates on the transnationalization of TV flows, we observe the platform’s presence in two peripheral markets: Brazil and South Korea. In both, we find similar tactics, such as the licensing and commissioning of local content and partnerships with national production companies. Although we identified a recent shift in the company’s strategies from Latin America towards the Asian market, we argue that it is imperative to deconstruct Netflix’s position as a mediator of narratives to and from the “rest of the world”.

    • Abstract: Resumen Este trabajo estudia cómo la serie Sex Education difunde transnacionalmente discursos sobre sexualidades no normativas, igualdad y diversidad LGBTIQ+. Abstract This paper analyzes the series Sex Education’s role in the transnational dissemination of discourses on non-normative sexualities, equality and LGBTIQ+ diversity. From a LGBTIQ+ Studies perspective, a mixed design with non-experimental ex-post-facto methodology has been applied through transmedia measurement instruments and the ILGA World and Global Attitudes reports. Netflix -through Sex Education- is confirmed to transnationally spread values of diversity and LGBTIQ+ equality in countries without full social and legal protection for such diversity, promoting the construction of alternative subjectivities.

  • Product placement analysis in three Netflix original series

Abstract Advertising has encountered an obstacle with the proliferation of platforms like Netflix and this has sparked a boost in product placement. Through a content analysis, this exploratory study examines the use of product placement in three of Netflix’ original series to understand how it behaves on this platform. The results indicate that it is a settled formula, but that the type of location or the number of brands is determined by the plot. Likewise, the fact that the audience is not restricted to a specific country seems to favor the presence of global brands.

  • Netflix in Argentina: accelerated expansion and little local production

The aim of this article is to analyze the development of Netflix in Argentina, showing its market penetration, its business strategies, the regulatory framework in which it operates, its content offerings and its subscribers’ consumption. Regarding the menu they offer, the analysis focuses on the “Netflix Originals” section, where the company includes the contents they consider most attractive. The main hypothesis is that the accelerated expansion that the platform has had in Argentina, strengthened by agreements with the main telephone and pay tv companies, has not been accompanied by a specific strategy to develop the production of local contents.

  • Communicative habitus and social distancing. Effects on the modes of sign
           production during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract In the year 2020, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Mexico’s government implemented health policies of “social distancing”. In this essay, we make a theoretical reflection on this policies’ effects on signs’ production. The paper begins with our definition of communicational habitus and the semiotic relationship with social distancing to analyze systems’ evolutionary control from a systemic-semiotic approach.

  • Cinema and transdiscursive semiotics. Digital cinema in the multiscreen
era: a new environment, a new spectator

Abstract In recent years, a new cinematic environment has been taking shape, where the act of watching a film in a cinema had already been articulated as a minor commercial element within the film industry. But this trend, with the arrival of COVID-19 and the ban on commercial cinemas, was accelerated, generating the new multi-screen cinema: which has dominated the international scene in 2020, the first quarter of 2021, and which has introduced changes that will no longer be reversible. This may lead us to question whether we are still talking about cinema, in the sense it has been given since its invention.

  • The Effect of Sense of Movement in Audiovisual Media: A Study on
Kineticism as a Formant of Expression in Globo News’ Institutional

Abstract This paper analyzes the Brazilian cable television channel Globo News’ institutional motion sequence Intolerância. Israeli designer, Noma Bar, illustrated and directed Intolerância, which reveals in its discursive structures how the gaze of a Latin American country hegemonic media on the identity conflicts between West and East is aligned with Western powers. In the wake of Floch’s theoretical developments in plastic semiotics and Bergson’s postulations on the mechanism of the philosophy-centered filmmaking movement, this study aims to consider kineticism as a constitutive formant of visuality in audiovisual texts. The analyzed motion sequence is a notably exemplary object of establishing such hypothesis.

  • Immersive and brand journalism in educational and cultural information.
           The case of RTVE Lab

Abstract The aim of this research is to analyze the use of immersive and brand journalism in the information published by RTVE Lab.

  • Instant messaging as an informative source in organizational
communication: WhatsApp Business in Mexico and Spain

Abstract WhatsApp is the most used messaging service in Mexico and Spain. • Memes and semiotic processes related to the pandemic in Mexico

In order to examine the semiotic processes associated with the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico, the present work analyses memes that circulated on the Internet in the first half of 2020. Based on an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, this study reveals how these digital discourses contribute to the construction of social meanings that reinforce discrimination and exclusion, spread global ideologies, act as a vehicle for the collective expression of emotions and become a semiotic resource for either the reinforcement of sudden and massive processes involving semiotic constraints (such as social distancing or confinement), or for the semiotic conversion brought about by the “new normal”.
