Authors:Mogens Olesen Pages: 008 - 031 Abstract: When Denmark hosted the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2022, the riders were met by huge crowds and a jubilant atmosphere. On Twitter, Danish and international audiences extended this behavior as co-producers of a transmedia sports event of global reach. Using the theoretical framework of a typology depicting four general discursive tweet modes, this study examines the communicative patterns involved as Danish residents shared their experiences and reactions to hosting the Grand Départ. A content analysis of their tweets revealed that the exceptional circumstances of hosting a major sporting event prompted them to focus more on themes surrounding the event than on the actual cycling. A subsequent qualitative analysis of Danish and international tweets focusing on the inter- play of global and local themes surrounding the Danish Grand Départ identifies evaluative, participatory, humorous/ironic, and emotional dimensions as central expressions of glocal consciousness. Authors:Kirsten Frandsen Pages: 032 - 052 Abstract: This article analyses sports events as mega-events with global appeal and increasing socio-economic and cultural significance, and as genres which have now become important in the television industry’s transformation from broadcast to online streaming. It presents findings from a qualitative production analysis of how the Tour de France 2022 was shaped in a twofold strategic context. Genre specific aspects of the media event in the ongoing transformation of the television industry and wider strategic interests behind the hosting and organization of the start of the race in Denmark 2022 are discussed and their intertwinements are described. Based on interviews, documents, observations, screenshots and select broadcasts, the article presents a thematic analysis of how the event in Denmark was shaped in a shared concern for television’s ability to provide exposure of the race and the Danish context and public service broadcaster TV 2’s particular strategic branding interests in the event. Authors:Alice Nemcova Tejkalova, Anna Hrbáčková, Veronika Macková, Ondřej Trunečka, Kateřina Turková Pages: 053 - 075 Abstract: Based on a mixed method approach (content analysis and CDA), this article examines the media coverage of a football game between AC Sparta Praha and Rangers FC, played in Prague in the autumn of 2021, that was followed by heavily mediated discussion regard- ing the controversial booing of Rangers FC player Glen Kamara, who was sent off from the game after having been given a red card due to a pair of fouls. The audience in attendance was accused of Kamara’s racist abuse, but the UEFA later decided that there was insuf- ficient evidence of racism at the match. This case study focuses on the media coverage in Scottish, Czech, and UK nationwide media, as well as related discussions on Twitter. We revealed competing constructions of reality depending on diverse interpretations of the facts and lack of intercultural understanding. Authors:Neil O'Boyle Pages: 075 - 093 Abstract: This article demonstrates how the concept of paratexts can be employed in the analysis of unfolding sports events. Drawing on the work of Jonathan Gray and Matt Hills, it reflects on the “extended presence” of sports events across media, space, and time – how mean- ing is created before, during, and after their apparent conclusion, and how their mediated “centres” appear to move in the process. By way of illustration, it examines a boxing event in early 2023 involving the popular British boxers Chris Eubank Jr. and Liam Smith; how- ever, it focuses on the events before the event – namely, the preceding press conference and weigh-in – and suggests that these “entryway events” were paratextually significant in shaping expectations and attitudes towards the “main event”. The article also demon- strates how sports events feed into wider processes of social inclusion and exclusion, often acting as lightning rods for public discussions of socio-political issues, such as race, class, gender, and (in this case) sexual orientation. Authors:Danilo Callea Pages: 094 - 113 Abstract: The article examines the current challenges and opportunities facing the Italian public broadcaster Rai in relation to global sporting events in the digital scenario. Adopting a sys- temic perspective, the study explores the tensions among the increasing commercialisation/ political disenchantment of major sporting events, and the public remits of Rai to secure them within the current EU regulation on sport rights and in terms of public service media. An historical overview of Rai’s linkage with sports is provided to contextualise the discussion of the online TV service RaiPlay and its current strategy for both on-demand sports content and the live coverage of recent global sporting events, such as Tokyo 2020 and Qatar 2022. The article concludes by emphasising the potential for Rai to enable new forms of engage- ment, while also urging a careful consideration of the traditional remits and values of public service in the face of evolving media landscapes. Thus, the media have enormous potential and responsibility when writing about societal issues, such as mental health. Mental health coverage has traditionally been criticised for creating stigma, as the topic is often presented in combination with violence and crime. Since the 1990s, researchers have found that more positive representations challenge negative portrayals, and that such representa- tions change the audience’s attitudes towards the issue. Few studies on the topic have been conducted in Norway; therefore, one cannot confirm or deny whether the exact coverage change is occurring. Using a quantitative framing analysis, this study argues that mental health issues were normalised in the two most-read online news sources, Verdens Gang (VG.no) and Norsk Rikskringkasting (NRK.no), in 2018–2021. Authors:Jakob Linaa Jensen, Jonas Dalbøge Pages: 136 - 155 Abstract: I denne artikel undersøges det, hvem danske journalister kommunikerer med på det sociale medie Twitter, nu kendt under navnet X. Data er baseret på en analyse af 25 journalisters interaktionsmønstre og efterfølgende fire kvalitative interviews. Det konkluderes, at de i overvejende grad interagerer med andre journalister og kun i begrænset omfang med borgerne. Dette kan indikere, at journalister i al fald på visse punkter indgår i lukkede net- værk, det der i litteraturen undertiden er kaldt ”filterbobler”. De opfølgende interviews viser, journalisterne er bevidst om denne skævhed, men at stærke professionslogikker, kollegiale netværk og frygten for at miste journalistisk objektivitet er blandt de faktorer, der trækker i modsat retning af mere borgerinddragelse. Således er journalistisk professionsetik, normer og vaner altså på paradoksal vis, i modsætning til forpligtelsen som vagthund, vejrhane og demokratisk talerør. Dette kan føre til lavere troværdighed for journalister og dermed bidrage yderligere til den tabte forbindelse til borgerne.
