  • Prototype-based classifier learning for long-tailed visual recognition

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper, we tackle the long-tailed visual recognition problem from the categorical prototype perspective by proposing a prototype-based classifier learning (PCL) method. Specifically, thanks to the generalization ability and robustness, categorical prototypes reveal their advantages of representing the category semantics. Coupled with their class-balance characteristic, categorical prototypes also show potential for handling data imbalance. In our PCL, we propose to generate the categorical classifiers based on the prototypes by performing a learnable mapping function. To further alleviate the impact of imbalance on classifier generation, two kinds of classifier calibration approaches are designed from both prototype-level and example-level aspects. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets, including the large-scale iNaturalist, Places-LT, and ImageNet-LT, justify that the proposed PCL can outperform state-of-the-arts. Furthermore, validation experiments can demonstrate the effectiveness of tailored designs in PCL for long-tailed problems.

  • Experimental investigation of the gate voltage range of negative
           differential capacitance in ferroelectric transistors

      Abstract: Conclusion In this study, the impacts of sweeping rate and device parameters on the gate voltage range of the NDC phenomenon are investigated based on experiments. With the increase of the frequency and dielectric capacitance, the beginning gate voltage of the NC emergence will increase, and the gate duration voltage range and the maximum gate voltage amplification factor appear to increase first and then decrease. This work suggests a big challenge for scaled NCFETs to operate at high frequency with low VDD.

      Abstract: Conclusion In this study, the TID effects on the FTJs with HfO2/Al2O3 dielectric bilayer are investigated. The P-V, C-V, I-V, endurance, and read current characteristics are analyzed before and after radiation. The I-V, P-V and endurance characteristics show very little change after the total dose of up to 1 Mrad (Si), which means the ferro-electricity is not affected by the TID. However, owing to the positive fixed charges formed in Al2O3 film and the interface traps accumulation during the radiation, the read current of the programed device is increasing, while the read current of the erased device is reducing after radiation. These findings are useful in understanding the radiation mechanisms of HfO2/dielectric bilayer-based FTJs and can promote the application of FTJs in the nuclear and aerospace environments.

      Abstract: Abstract The mainstream crowd counting methods usually utilize the convolution neural network (CNN) to regress a density map, requiring point-level annotations. However, annotating each person with a point is an expensive and laborious process. During the testing phase, the point-level annotations are not considered to evaluate the counting accuracy, which means the point-level annotations are redundant. Hence, it is desirable to develop weakly-supervised counting methods that just rely on count-level annotations, a more economical way of labeling. Current weakly-supervised counting methods adopt the CNN to regress a total count of the crowd by an image-to-count paradigm. However, having limited receptive fields for context modeling is an intrinsic limitation of these weakly-supervised CNN-based methods. These methods thus cannot achieve satisfactory performance, with limited applications in the real world. The transformer is a popular sequence-to-sequence prediction model in natural language processing (NLP), which contains a global receptive field. In this paper, we propose TransCrowd, which reformulates the weakly-supervised crowd counting problem from the perspective of sequence-to-count based on transformers. We observe that the proposed TransCrowd can effectively extract the semantic crowd information by using the self-attention mechanism of transformer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to adopt a pure transformer for crowd counting research. Experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed TransCrowd achieves superior performance compared with all the weakly-supervised CNN-based counting methods and gains highly competitive counting performance compared with some popular fully-supervised counting methods.

  • Small-signal stability and robustness analysis for microgrids under
           time-constrained DoS attacks and a mitigation adaptive secondary control
           method

      Abstract: Abstract With the close integration of cyber and power systems, the consensus-based secondary frequency control in a microgrid is increasingly vulnerable to communication failures such as transmission delays and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, which can affect the efficiency of frequency recovery in the secondary frequency control. Leveraging the small-signal model, this paper develops a novel cyber-physical system model to analyze the cross-layer effect of DoS attacks on microgrids. In this way, the cross-layer impact on the microgrid from the cyber system to the physical system can be convincingly analyzed. Based on the root approximation method, the tolerant saving time is designed for the microgrid as the index to evaluate the tolerance margin of the time-constrained DoS attack, and then the relationship between the margin and secondary control coefficients is found. A mitigation adaptive secondary control technique is proposed so that the attacked microgrid can dynamically tune the secondary control gain according to the saving time and tolerant saving time (TST). The simulation results show that although the microgrid with high secondary control gain has good dynamic robustness, its TST is low. In addition, the proposed adaptive secondary control system is significantly better than the traditional control system in terms of the stability performance of the microgrid under a DoS attack.

  • RLLNet: a lightweight remaking learning network for saliency redetection
           on RGB-D images

      Abstract: Conclusion We developed a lightweight learning framework for efficient RGB-D SOD. First, a hierarchical cross-modal principal network extracts complementary depth features by learning multiscale refinement features. RGB and depth features are alternately input into the CIGM for gradual refinement. A cross-modal interaction strategy can prevent mutual degradation between RGB and depth features and achieve preliminary background noise interference. Then, the GDAM receives prior cues and imports them into a lightweight network that initializes weights. Finally, the saliency map is predicted by the weighted addition of the initial saliency map of the reversed background. Its performance on eight benchmark datasets demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed RLLNet in terms of efficiency and robustness.

  • Human-object interaction detection via interactive visual-semantic graph
           learning

      Abstract: Conclusion In this study, we propose modeling the context visually and semantically by combining a visual graph and a semantic graph and learning a vital context in the HOI problem using a group of graph update-modules, including graph inner update modules and graph cross update modules. We fuse the contextual features from the visual graph and semantic graph with the visual characteristics of the human-object pairs in a network to detect HOIs. We evaluate our proposed model on two challenging datasets, HICO-DET and V-COCO, and demonstrate excellent performance. Our work can provide a reference for modeling contextual information in the HOI problem.

  • Physical investigation of subthreshold swing degradation behavior in
           negative capacitance FET

      Abstract: Abstract Power consumption has become one of the bottlenecks limiting the future development of integrated circuits. Tunnel FETs (TFETs) and negative capacitance FETs (NCFETs) can break the subthreshold swing limitation (60 mV/dec at room temperature) of conventional metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) to reduce the operating voltage and thus power consumption. However, induced by the band-to-band tunneling mechanism, TFETs have a subthreshold swing degradation issue and relatively low ON current. Although NCFETs with ferroelectric/dielectric gate stack can theoretically maintain a high ON current comparable to conventional MOSFET, the physical origin of sub-60 SS is controversial and the mechanism of switching behavior in NCFET is still not clear. In this work, by experimentally investigating the whole negative differential capacitance process and its gate voltage amplification coefficient, an intrinsic issue of SS degradation with increased gate voltage is also found in NCFET for the first time. Based on the physical investigation and simulation results, it is shown that the intrinsic SS degradation in NCFET is resulting from the instant dielectric polarization response. Both the decrease of dielectric thickness and the increase of dielectric constant may lead to the severer SS degradation, which is not favorable for scaled NCFETs.

  • Onfocus detection: identifying individual-camera eye contact from
           unconstrained images

      Abstract: Abstract Onfocus detection aims at identifying whether the focus of the individual captured by a camera is on the camera or not. Based on the behavioral research, the focus of an individual during face-to-camera communication leads to a special type of eye contact, i.e., the individual-camera eye contact, which is a powerful signal in social communication and plays a crucial role in recognizing irregular individual status (e.g., lying or suffering mental disease) and special purposes (e.g., seeking help or attracting fans). Thus, developing effective onfocus detection algorithms is of significance for assisting the criminal investigation, disease discovery, and social behavior analysis. However, the review of the literature shows that very few efforts have been made toward the development of onfocus detector owing to the lack of large-scale public available datasets as well as the challenging nature of this task. To this end, this paper engages in the onfocus detection research by addressing the above two issues. Firstly, we build a large-scale onfocus detection dataset, named as the onfocus detection in the wild (OFDIW). It consists of 20623 images in unconstrained capture conditions (thus called “in the wild”) and contains individuals with diverse emotions, ages, facial characteristics, and rich interactions with surrounding objects and background scenes. On top of that, we propose a novel end-to-end deep model, i.e., the eye-context interaction inferring network (ECIIN), for onfocus detection, which explores eye-context interaction via dynamic capsule routing. Finally, comprehensive experiments are conducted on the proposed OFDIW dataset to benchmark the existing learning models and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ECIIN.

  • Incomplete multi-view clustering via local and global co-regularization

      Abstract: Abstract The incompleteness of multi-view data is a phenomenon associated with real-world data mining applications, which brings a huge challenge for multi-view clustering. Although various types of clustering methods, which try to obtain a complete and consensus clustering result from a latent subspace, have been developed to overcome this problem, most methods excessively rely on views-public instances to bridge the connection with view-private instances. When lacking sufficient views-public instances, existing methods fail to transmit the information among incomplete views effectively. To overcome this limitation, we propose an incomplete multi-view clustering algorithm via local and global co-regularization (IMVC-LG). In this algorithm, we define a new objective function that is composed of two terms: local clustering from each view and global clustering from multiple views, which constrain each other to exploit the local clustering information from different incomplete views and determine a global consensus clustering result, respectively. Furthermore, an iterative optimization method is proposed to minimize the objective function. Finally, we compare the proposed algorithm with other state-of-the-art incomplete multi-view clustering methods on several benchmark datasets to illustrate its effectiveness.

  • Range-angle-dependent beamforming for FDA-MIMO radar using oblique
           projection

      Abstract: Abstract Frequency diverse array (FDA)-multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar is characterized with a range-angle-dependent transceive beampattern by introducing incremental frequencies among the transmit array elements and separating the transmitted waveforms with matched filtering in the receiver. In this respect, the paper aims to control the range-angle-dependent transceive beampattern for FDA-MIMO radar by designing the weight vector according to the desired response. At the design stage, the weight vectors to control the beampattern responses of different regions are devised by performing the orthogonal decomposition technique. Then, a filtering matrix using the oblique projection operator is constructed to filter the weight vectors for different regions, where two iterative algorithms are developed either considering concurrent or successive control of multiple regions. In such a way, a desired range-angle-dependent transceive beampattern is formed with simultaneously broadened nulls and a flat-top mainlobe. At the analysis stage, the method has been applied to interference mitigation in FDA-MIMO radar, where the mismatch exists both in the sidelobes and mainlobe. Simulated and measured results are provided to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

  • Deep reinforcement learning for optimal denial-of-service attacks
           scheduling

      Abstract: Abstract We consider an optimal denial-of-service (DoS) attack scheduling problem of N independent linear time-invariant processes, where sensors have limited computational capability. Sensors transmit measurements to the remote estimator via a communication channel that is exposed to DoS attackers. However, due to limited energy, an attacker can only attack a subset of sensors at each time step. To maximally degrade the estimation performance, a DoS attacker needs to determine which sensors to attack at each time step. In this context, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, which combines Q-learning with a deep neural network, is introduced to solve the Markov decision process (MDP). The DoS attack scheduling optimization problem is formulated as an MDP that is solved by the DRL algorithm. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the efficiency of the optimal DoS attack scheduling scheme using the DRL algorithm.

  • Event-based sliding mode control under denial-of-service attacks

      Abstract: Abstract This paper deals with the problem of estimator-based sliding mode control against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and discrete events via a time-delay approach. A networked system is considered an uncertain dynamical system with matched and mismatched perturbations and exogenous disturbance in the network environment. A network-resource-aware event-triggering mechanism is designed with aperiodically releasing system measurements. Furthermore, to describe the DoS attack duration and inter-event time, a time-delay modeling approach considers the DOS attack duration and inter-event time as a “time delay” of the measurements between the sensor and controller over the network is proposed. Consequently, an interval-time-delay system with uncertainties is formulated. A state-observer-based sliding mode controller, by which the ideal sliding mode can be achieved, is proposed against the DoS attacks. The resulting sliding motion is proved to be robust and stable with an ℒ2 gain performance. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability of the present sliding mode control are validated in a simulated pendulum system.

  • Generalized message passing detection of SCMA systems based on dynamic
           factor graph for better and flexible performance-complexity tradeoff

      Abstract: Abstract Multiuser detection based on the message passing algorithm (MPA) has been considered for sparse code multiple access (SCMA) systems. Recently, some complexity-reduced MPA detectors have been proposed, among which the MPA detector based on dynamic factor graph (DFG-MPA) has been shown to outperform other MPA detectors with comparable complexities. However, all these MPA detectors are somehow not very flexible in terms of performance-complexity tradeoff, i.e., the granularities of computational complexity reduction are relatively large. In this paper, a generalized scheme of DFG-MPA, termed as GDFG-MPA, is proposed to make a better and more flexible performance-complexity tradeoff. The proposed scheme features two aspects: (1) instead of banning a message update forever, a banned message update at some iteration is allowed to be updated at later iterations; (2) different numbers of message updates are banned from updating at different iterations. Optimization of GDFG-MPA can be made by allocating banned message updates among iterations. Numerical results have demonstrated that compared to DFG-MPA the proposed GDFG-MPA can achieve much better performance at the same computational complexity or achieve the same performance with much lower complexity. Moreover, the proposed GDFG-MPA is more flexible in tuning the performance and complexity tradeoff.

  • Deepwalk-aware graph convolutional networks

      Abstract: Abstract Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) provide a promising way to extract the useful information from graph-structured data. Most of the existing GCNs methods usually focus on local neighborhood information based on specific convolution operations, and ignore the global structure of the input data. To extract the latent representation for the graph-structured data more effectively, we introduce a deepwalk strategy into GCNs to efficiently explore the global graph information. This strategy can complement the local neighborhood information of a graph, resulting in the more robust representation for the graph data. The fusion of the local neighboring and global structured information of a graph can further facilitate deep feature learning at the output layer of GCNs for node classification. Experimental results show that the proposed model has achieved state-of-the-art results on three benchmark datasets including Cora, Citeseer, and Pubmed citation networks.

  • Progressive learning with multi-scale attention network for cross-domain
           vehicle re-identification

      Abstract: Abstract Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims to identify vehicles across different cameras that have non-overlapping views. Most existing vehicle reID approaches train the reID model with well-labeled datasets via a supervised manner, which inevitably causes a severe drop in performance when tested in an unknown domain. Moreover, these supervised approaches require full annotations, which is limiting owing to the amount of unlabeled data. Therefore, with the aim of addressing the aforementioned problems, unsupervised vehicle reID models have attracted considerable attention. It always adopts domain adaptation to transfer discriminative information from supervised domains to unsupervised ones. In this paper, a novel progressive learning method with a multi-scale fusion network is proposed, named PLM, for vehicle reID in the unknown domain, which directly exploits inference from the available abundant data without any annotations. For PLM, a domain adaptation module is employed to smooth the domain bias, which generates images with similar data distribution to unlabeled target domain as “pseudo target samples”. Furthermore, to better exploit the distinct features of vehicle images in the unknown domain, a multi-scale attention network is proposed to train the reID model with the “pseudo target samples” and unlabeled samples; this network embeds low-layer texture features with high-level semantic features to train the reID model. Moreover, a weighted label smoothing (WLS) loss is proposed, which considers the distance between samples and different clusters to balance the confidence of pseudo labels in the feature learning module. Extensive experiments are carried out to verify that our proposed PLM achieves excellent performance on several benchmark datasets.
