  • Throughput and latency targeted RL spectrum allocation in heterogeneous

      Abstract: Abstract The increased adoption and development of 5 G-based services have greatly increased the dynamic nature of traffic, including types, sizes, and requirements. Flex-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) have become prolific in supporting these services. However, this transition led to issues such as lower traffic throughput and resource wastage in the form of bandwidth fragmentation. With the continued growth of these services, proper traffic management to reduce this issue has become essential. To overcome this challenge, we propose a Throughput and Latency-First Reinforcement Learning-based spectrum allocation algorithm (TLFRL) in IP-over-fixed/flex-grid optical networks. The main target of TLFRL is to reduce the need to reallocate the spectrum by lowering the fragmentation and blocking probability. We achieve this by leveraging advanced demand organization techniques while using traditional networking infrastructure intelligently to offload compatible services, avoiding latency violations. Extensive simulations evaluated traffic throughput, fragmentation, and average latency. The results show that the proposed solution outperforms contemporary fixed grid-based and heuristic approaches. It also provides comparable results to state-of-the-art flex-grid spectrum allocation techniques.

  • Discreet: distributed delivery service with context-aware cooperation

      Abstract: Abstract End-to-end encrypted messaging applications such as Signal became widely popular thanks to their capability to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of online communication. While the highest security guarantees were long reserved for two-party communication, solutions for n-party communication remained either inefficient or less secure until the standardization of the MLS protocol (Messaging Layer Security). This new protocol offers an efficient way to provide end-to-end secure communication with the same guarantees originally offered by the Signal protocol for two-party communication. However, both solutions still rely on a centralized component for message delivery, called the Delivery Service in the MLS protocol. The centralization of the delivery service makes it an ideal target for attackers and threatens the availability of any protocol relying on MLS. In order to overcome this issue, we propose DiSCreet (Distributed delIvery Service with Context-awaRE coopEraTion), a design that allows clients to exchange protocol messages efficiently and without any intermediary. It uses a probabilistic reliable-broadcast mechanism to efficiently deliver messages and the Cascade Consensus protocol to handle messages requiring an agreement. Our solution strengthens the availability of the MLS protocol without compromising its security. We compare the theoretical performance of DiSCreet with another distributed solution, the DCGKA protocol, and detail the implementation of our solution.

  • A revocable attribute-based access control with non-monotonic access
           structure

      Abstract: Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized data manipulation across various applications, particularly in online healthcare paradigm, where medical data are collected and processed for remote monitoring and analysis. To improve the privacy and security of such sensitive healthcare data, the attribute-based encryption (ABE) with non-monotonic access policies has recently provided a fine-grained access control within cloud and IoT-based healthcare ecosystems. Specifically, the adoption of multi-authority ABE with untrusted authorities has eliminated the need for a trusted authority. However, ensuring the privacy of user’s identity and attribute sets from these untrusted authorities remains a significant challenge in this context. To address this challenge, this paper introduces an enhanced multi-authority ABE approach, incorporating a robust attribute revocation mechanism. This enhancement safeguards user’s identity and attribute-set privacy while remaining resilient against collusion attacks and ensuring backward secrecy. Moreover, the proposed approach provides non-monotonic access policies, which supports positive and negative constraints using NOT operation as well as AND and OR operations.

      Abstract: Abstract Fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks offer flexibility to address various emerging use cases. Radio virtualization enhances flexibility by enabling multiple heterogeneous virtual radios to coexist on the same hardware. One method for virtualizing radio devices involves using virtual machines and containers to multiplex software radio implementations over generic multipurpose radio hardware. This paper reviews security issues in this context, evaluates the experimental bounds of communication for software-defined radio (SDR) devices, and assesses virtualization’s impact on radio virtualization’s performance. This study aims to determine the suitability of virtual environments for SDR applications. The results indicate that container-based radio virtualization performance is comparable to SDR applications running on native Linux.

  • Inferring the confidence level of BGP-based distributed intrusion
           detection systems alarms

      Abstract: Abstract Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is increasingly becoming a multipurpose protocol. However, it keeps suffering from security issues such as bogus announcements for malicious goals. Some of these security breaches are especially critical for distributed intrusion detection systems that use BGP as the underlay network for interchanging alarms. In this sense, assessing the confidence level of detection alarms transported via BGP messages is critical to prevent internal attacks. Most of the proposals addressing the confidence level of detection alarms rely on complex and time-consuming mechanisms that can also be a potential target for further attacks. In this paper, we propose an out-of-band system based on machine learning to infer the confidence level of BGP messages, using just the mandatory fields of the header. Tests using two different data sets, (i) from the indirect effects of a widespread worm attack and (ii) using up-to-date data from the IPTraf Project, show promising results, considering well-known performance metrics, such as recall, accuracy, receiver operating characteristics (ROC), and f1-score.

  • Impact of phase modulator on the performance of Costas loop

      Abstract: Abstract  In the present work, a modified Costas loop is presented with the help of mathematical modeling and numerical simulation. The voltage-controlled oscillator output phase along with frequency is controlled using the input control voltage. The modified loop is tested as frequency demodulator circuit where the improvement in sideband attenuation is clearly visible using an additional phase control arrangement. Numerical simulation result leads to a similar conclusion when the ratio of third harmonic to first harmonic and the ratio of first sideband attenuation to carrier are obtained for different proportions of the phase control. Noise bandwidth and lock range of the modified loop are investigated with special emphasis on the dependence of these parameters on the phase modulator gain. Lock range of the loop is evaluated analytically. An excellent demodulation capability of the loop has been reported in the presence of the additional phase control. Analytical results coupled with numerical findings presented are in good agreement.

  • A review on lexical based malicious domain name detection methods

      Abstract: Abstract Nowadays, domain names are becoming crucial digital assets for any business. However, the media never stopped reporting phishing and identity theft attacks held by third-party entities that rely on domain names to mislead Internet users. Thus, Palo Alto Networks revealed in their studies 20 largely cyber-squatted domain names targeting popular brands. Based on their behavior, domain names appear in public lists that objectively evaluate their reputation. Blacklists contain domain names that have previously committed suspicious acts, whereas whitelists include the most popular and trustworthy domain names. For a long time, this listing technique has been used as a reactive approach to counter domain name-based attacks. However, it suffers from the limitation of responding late to attacks. Nowadays, techniques tend to be much more proactive. They operate before any attack occurs. As part of the CSNET conference, we published a short paper that describes a plethora of domain name attacks and their associated detection techniques using their lexical features (Hamroun et al. 2022). In this paper, we present an extended version of the original one which discusses the previously mentioned points in more detail and adds some elements of understanding when it comes to malicious domain name detection. Hence, we provide a literature review of malicious domain name detection techniques that use only the lexical features of domain names. These features are available, privacy-preserving, and highly improve detection results. The review covers recent works that report relevant performance categorized according to a new taxonomy. Moreover, we introduce a new criterion for comparing all the existing works based on targeted maliciousness type before discussing the limitations and the newly emerging research directions in this field.

  • A distributed platform for intrusion detection system using data stream
           mining in a big data environment

      Abstract: Abstract With the growth of computer networks worldwide, there has been a greater need to protect local networks from malicious data that travel over the network. The increase in volume, speed, and variety of data requires a more robust, accurate intrusion detection system capable of analyzing a huge amount of data. This work proposes the creation of an intrusion detection system using stream classifiers and three classification layers—with and without a reduction in the number of features of the records and three classifiers in parallel with a voting system. The results obtained by the proposed system are compared against other models proposed in the literature, using two datasets to validate the proposed system. In all cases, gains in accuracy of up to 18.52% and 3.55% were obtained, using the datasets NSL-KDD and CICIDS2017, respectively. Reductions in classification time up to 35.51% and 94.90% were also obtained using the NSL-KDD and CICIDS2017 datasets, respectively.

  • Reliable feature selection for adversarially robust cyber-attack detection

      Abstract: Abstract The growing cybersecurity threats make it essential to use high-quality data to train machine learning (ML) models for network traffic analysis, without noisy or missing data. By selecting the most relevant features for cyber-attack detection, it is possible to improve both the robustness and computational efficiency of the models used in a cybersecurity system. This work presents a feature selection and consensus process that combines multiple methods and applies them to several network datasets. Two different feature sets were selected and were used to train multiple ML models with regular and adversarial training. Finally, an adversarial evasion robustness benchmark was performed to analyze the reliability of the different feature sets and their impact on the susceptibility of the models to adversarial examples. By using an improved dataset with more data diversity, selecting the best time-related features and a more specific feature set, and performing adversarial training, the ML models were able to achieve a better adversarially robust generalization. The robustness of the models was significantly improved without their generalization to regular traffic flows being affected, without increases of false alarms, and without requiring too many computational resources, which enables a reliable detection of suspicious activity and perturbed traffic flows in enterprise computer networks.

      Abstract: Abstract With the increasing sophistication and heterogeneity of network infrastructures, the need for Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) is becoming more critical than ever. VNE consists of mapping virtual networks on top of the physical infrastructure to optimize network resource use and improve overall network performance. Considered as one of the most important bricks of network slicing, it has been proven to be an NP-hard problem with no exact solution. Several heuristics and meta-heuristics were proposed to solve it. As heuristics do not provide satisfactory solutions, meta-heuristics allow a good exploration of the solutions’ space, though they require testing several solutions, which is generally unfeasible in a real world environment. Other methods relying on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and combined with heuristics yield better performance without revealing issues such as sticking at local minima or poor space exploration limits. Nevertheless, these algorithms present varied performances according to the employed approach and the problem to be treated, resulting in robustness problems. To overcome these limits, we propose a robust placement approach based on the Algorithm Selection paradigm. The main idea is to dynamically select the best algorithm from a set of learning strategies regarding reward and sample efficiency at each time step. The proposed strategy acts as a meta-algorithm that brings more robustness to the network since it dynamically selects the best solution for a specific scenario. We propose two selection algorithms. First, we consider an offline selection in which the placement strategies are updated outside the selection period. In the second algorithm, the different agents are updated simultaneously with the selection process, which we call an online selection. Both solutions proved their efficiency and managed to dynamically select the best algorithm regarding acceptance ratio of the deployed services. Besides, the proposed solutions succeed in commuting to the best placement strategy depending on the strategies’ strengths while outperforming all standalone algorithms.

  • Wi-Fi faces the new wireless ecosystem: a critical review

      Abstract: Abstract Over the last three decades, we have become more dependent on wireless connectivity to access services and applications from nearly anywhere. The overstated emergence of the all-encompassing fifth generation (5G) of mobile systems begs the question of the future of the new generation of IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) solutions. However, Wi-Fi has certain advantages compared to cellular systems in different ways: (i) a fast-paced standardization process; (ii) a diverse, agile, and highly competitive manufacturer base; and (iii) a broad base of early adopters for both office and house wireless networks. In addition, the rise of enabling technologies, such as software-defined wireless networks, may allow more robust and reliable Wi-Fi networks to bridge gaps in Wi-Fi technology to reach several vertical sectors. This review provides a technical analysis of the relationship between broadband wireless and Wi-Fi technologies. Wi-Fi has taken decisive steps with the evolution of several standards, and there is already evidence that Wi-Fi may partially (or completely) fulfill 5G’s strict service requirements. Next, we discussed the Wi-Fi and 5G convergence, which allow more control over user experiences and provide better service. This review concludes with an analysis of open challenges in the convergence of 5G and Wi-Fi systems. We conclude that Wi-Fi technology has and will continue to have a decisive role as an access technology in the new ecosystem of wireless networks.

  • Deep learning-based sequential models for multi-user detection with M-PSK
           for downlink NOMA wireless communication systems

      Abstract: Abstract Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques have the potential to achieve large connectivity requirements for future-generation wireless communication. NOMA detection techniques require conventional successive interference cancellation (SIC) techniques for uplink and downlink transmissions on the receiver side to decode the transmitted signals. Multipath fading significantly impacts the SIC process and correct signal detection due to propagation delay and fading channel. Deep learning (DL) techniques can overcome conventional SIC detection limitations. Signal detection for a multi-user NOMA wireless communication system that relies on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is discussed using various DL approaches in this paper. For multi-user signal detection, different deep learning-based sequential model neural networks, gated recurrent unit (GRU), long short-term memory (LSTM), and bi-directional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) are applied. The deep neural network is initially trained offline with multi-user NOMA signals in the OFDM system and used to recover transmitted signals directly. DL-based sequential models with different cyclic prefixes and fast Fourier transforms with various M-phase shift keying (M-PSK) modulation schemes are discussed with deep learning optimization algorithms. In simulation results, the conventional SIC technique with minimum mean square error approach is compared to the effectiveness of DL-based models for signal detection of multi-user NOMA systems by their bit error rate performances. The root mean square error performance of different deep learning-based sequence models with other optimizers is also discussed. Moreover, the robustness of the Bi-LSTM is evaluated with the reliability of other DL-based sequential model applications in the multi-user downlink NOMA wireless communication systems.

  • On the capacity of multiple antenna systems

      Abstract: Abstract The significant role of multiple antenna techniques is vital to enable wireless systems to support the ever-rising demand for higher data rates and reliability. Thus, investigating these systems is continually important, and one of the essential aspects of this study is analyzing the capacity of such systems to gain insight into their performance. This paper presents several closed-form formulae to express the capacity of the multiple antenna system, by introducing newly derived finite and unconditionally valid solutions. It is also mathematically describing the outage probability of multiple antenna system in several scenarios. The numerical results show the tight fit between the obtained formulae and the Monte Carlo simulation outcomes.

  • Semi-blind AF transmission in secure NOMA systems

      Abstract: Abstract In the wireless channel state information (CSI)-assisted amplify-and-forward (AF) networks, an instantaneous CSI of the first hop is required to scale the amplification gain. However, the deployment of instantaneous CSI always remains difficult in real applications because it increases the CSI overhead and causes resources wastage such as power and bandwidth. In order to reduce the CSI overhead and the system complexity, we suggest the integration of semi-blind relay in secure non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems where only a statistical CSI of the first hop is used to generate the amplification gain. This paper addresses the performance analysis of the secure semi-blind AF-NOMA (S-SBAF-NOMA) schemes in which the base station communicates with a pair of users via a semi-blind relay node in the presence of one eavesdropper. First, we provide the expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at each receiver node. We then derive new analytical and asymptotic expressions for strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC) and secrecy outage probability (SOP). To ensure the exactness and the tractability of mathematical analysis, we provide some numerical results obtained through simulation rounds in Matlab, and we compare them with those of secure CSI-assisted AF-NOMA (S-CSIAF-NOMA) networks. Our results show that the proposed S-SBAF-NOMA scheme achieves comparable secrecy performance/same performance bounds as compared to S-CSIAF-NOMA scheme at the gain of a decrease in processing complexity and system overhead. Numerical results also demonstrate that S-SBAF-NOMA networks achieve superior secrecy performance for lower values of target data rates and SNR of the illegal link.

  • Capacity aware Wi-Fi networks deployment

      Abstract: Abstract Wireless technologies are used in almost every application domain. Applications have different requirements in terms of quality of service and network performance. When designing a wireless network, it is important to know the expected performance of the system. Including the application needs in the design of the network would help achieve the required performance. This paper focuses on the high throughput required for a Smart Farming use case. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology had greatly boosted the performance of wireless networks by introducing beamforming, which provides many benefits allowing wider coverage and better data rates. We propose a capacity-aware coverage study for Wi-Fi networks deployment in rural areas. We make our coverage estimations based on link budget calculations. We compare different deployment strategies and discuss the added value of beamforming. Our results are based on an analytical link budget estimation and a simulation study using the NS-3 simulator. We added all the needed functionalities on top of the existing Wi-Fi Module in NS-3. Results in terms of capacity, coverage, and number of access points deployed are discussed. We also developed an empirical analytical model that is based on the simulation results, which helps in estimating performance results for any deployment field size.

  • Two level data centric aggregation scheme for wireless sensor networks

      Abstract: Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) sense and collect information from a desired phenomenon with the help of sensor nodes that have limited computational power, battery, and memory. Several data aggregation approaches are proposed to make the sensor networks energy-efficient, increasing the network’s lifetime by controlling data redundancy at aggregator nodes. Redundant data is suppressed before transmission to the sink. In this work, our aim is to enhance the network lifetime by efficiently utilizing the network’s energy through controlled data redundancy and minimizing data transmission to the sink. Data aggregation occurs in two steps: firstly, within clusters where the cluster-head serves as the aggregation point, and secondly, at a central point in the network where the gateway node acts as the aggregation point. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed approach yields better results compared to a benchmark clustering protocol in terms of network stability, the number of data packets transferred to the destination, energy dissipation of nodes, and overall network lifetime.

  • SHAKE-ESDRL-based energy efficient intrusion detection and hashing system

      Abstract: Abstract Outstanding progress in unsolicited intrusions along with security threats, which interrupt the normal operations of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), have been attracted by the proliferation of WSNs and their applications. In WSNs, this demands an intrusion detection system (IDS), which can detect such attacks with higher detection accuracy. Designing an effective model for IDS using the SDK-LSHB-based SHAKE-ESDRL algorithm to improve accuracy and lessen training time and response time is the goal of this work. At first, duplicate removal, missing data removal, and data transfer are the steps through which the dataset was processed. From the processed data, by providing the extracted attributes as input to the entropy-based generalized discriminant analysis (E-GDA) method, the number of attributes is reduced. After that, the LogSwish-based deep reinforcement learning algorithm (LS-DRLA) method wielded the reduced attributes for intrusion detection (ID). By utilizing the SHAKE 256 algorithm, the attributes that fall into the attacked class label are hashed and stored in the hash table during this process. Next, to test the real-time data with the trained IDS, the WSN nodes are initialized. For this, by utilizing the supremum distance (SD-K-Means) algorithm, the sensor nodes (SNs) are clustered centered on the cluster heads (CHs) selected by the linear scaling-based honey badger optimization algorithm (LS-HBOA) method. At last, utilizing real-world-based datasets, the proposed algorithms are evaluated and the results are compared using statistical metrics.

  • Experimental assessment of SDR-based 5G positioning: methodologies and
           insights

      Abstract: Abstract While GPS has traditionally been the primary positioning technology, 3GPP has more recently begun to include positioning services as native, built-in features of future-generation cellular networks. With Release 16 of the 3GPP, finalized in 2021, a significant standardization effort has taken place for positioning in 5G networks, especially in terms of physical layer signals, measurements, schemes, and architecture to meet the requirements of a wide range of regulatory, commercial and industrial use cases. However, experimentally driven research aiming to assess the real-world performance of 5G positioning is still lagging behind, root causes being (i) the slow integration of positioning technologies in open-source 5G frameworks, (ii) the complexity in setting up and properly configuring a 5G positioning testbed, and (iii) the cost of a multi-BS deployment. This paper sheds some light on all such aspects. After a brief overview of state of the art in 5G positioning and its support in open-source platforms based on software-defined radios (SDRs), we provide advice on how to set up positioning testbeds, and we demonstrate, via a set of real-world measurements, how to assess aspects such as reference signal configurations, localization algorithms, and network deployments. Our contribution further includes an assessment of the efficacy of utilizing measurements obtained from a single-link limited-size testbed to forecast localization performance in more elaborate (and hence more expensive) multi-node network settings. We posit that our methodological insights can assist in lowering the entry cost barriers associated with conducting 5G positioning experiments and, consequently, promote additional experimental research in this domain.

  • A lightweight, efficient, and secure identity-based authentication scheme
           for underwater green transport systems

      Abstract: Abstract The underwater green transport system (UwGTs) is a network of connected, intelligent underwater sensors or Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The sensor networks used in UwGTs are distinct from traditional territorial wireless sensor networks in many ways, including their lengthy propagation delays, restricted bandwidths, and poor reliability. UwGTs would face significant security difficulties due to these unique traits. The main goal of this paper is to resolve authentication issues across the entire UwGTs network. The more significant challenge in developing an authentication scheme for UwGTs is to develop a simple, efficient, and secure system that considers the sensor nodes’ resource limitations. In light of this, we suggest an identity-based signature-based authentication scheme based on elliptic curve cryptography that enhances network lifetime by reducing sensor node energy consumption. The security of the suggested scheme has also been confirmed using a formal security assessment technique like the Random Oracle Model (ROM) and Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) software tools. In addition, the proposed scheme is more effective and lightweight regarding computation costs, communication costs, energy consumption, and comparative energy efficiency than the existing identity-based authentication schemes.
