  • Evacuation- and hurricane-related experiences, emotional distress, and
their associations with mothers’ health risk behaviors.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objective: Extreme weather events pose major risks to human health and have a greater psychological impact on women and parents, but little is known about how they affect health risk behaviors. This study evaluated how disaster-related experiences before, during, and after Hurricane Irma were associated with mothers’ health-risk behaviors, and the extent to which posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depressive symptoms potentially mediated these relationships. Method: Mothers (N = 534; 33% underrepresented minorities) residing in Southern Florida completed an online survey about their evacuation experiences before and hurricane experiences during and after Irma. Mothers also completed measures of PTSS, depressive symptoms, and health risk behaviors (i.e., substance use, sedentary behaviors, and difficulty falling or staying asleep). Confirmatory factor analysis assessed the fit of the health-risk behavior indicators on a latent factor. Structural equation modeling evaluated relationships between variables. Results: A one-factor model for health risk behaviors fit the data well. After controlling for income, loss and disruption after the storm and depressive symptoms were directly associated with mothers’ health risk behaviors. Before-the-storm evacuation stressors, actual life-threatening events during the storm, and loss and disruption after the storm were related to mothers’ PTSS and depressive symptoms and also associated with health risk behaviors indirectly via depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Stressful experiences before, during, and after hurricanes are associated with mothers’ health-risk behaviors via postevent emotional distress. Health interventions should include strategies that help parents cope with the impact of extreme weather events, both before and after such events occur. Mothers’ distress potentially could affect child health. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Habit and goal-related constructs in determining toothbrushing behavior:
           Two sensor-based longitudinal studies.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objectives: Two longitudinal studies were conducted to examine how habits and goal-related constructs determine toothbrushing behavior from a dual-process perspective. We aimed to describe the variations of habit strength, intention, and attitude and to test their associations with actual behavior at both inter- and intraindividual levels. In addition, toothbrushing behavior was measured both by self-report and sensors with the goal to compare these measures. Method: In Study 1, 40 young adults were instructed to brush their teeth twice a day, and their behaviors were measured by accelerometers for 3 weeks. Participants also self-reported their instrumental and affective attitude, habit strength, and behavior frequency weekly. Effects of interest were estimated using structural equation modeling. Study 2 replicated Study 1 with a larger and more diverse sample (N = 79), adding a measure of behavioral intention. Results: Supporting the dual-process account, habit strength predicted future behavior in addition to goal-related constructs. Habit strength also attenuated the influences of goal-related constructs on behavior, but this pattern only emerged interindividually and for self-reported behavior. In addition, toothbrushing behavior was more strongly driven by affective rather than instrumental attitude. In both studies, associations among variables were weaker within-person and when sensor-measured behavior was modeled. Conclusions: The partial support for the dual-process account suggests the need of using habit-based interventions to complement intention-based interventions when attempting to change oral health routines. Our findings also highlight the importance of affective aspects of toothbrushing behavior and the potential to incorporate sensor-based objective measures in research and interventions. • Association of quantitative information and patient knowledge about
           prostate cancer outcomes.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objective: When the volume or complexity of health information exceeds the capacity to process it, patients may misinterpret or ignore critical information. Numerical information is especially challenging to process for many patients, yet no empirical data shows whether numerical information influences how well they could process and recall it. Method: Using natural language processing tools, we estimated the amount of numerical and probability-related (quantitative) information that was provided in 112 paired urology–radiology clinical consultations with patients who had been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. The primary outcome measured was patient knowledge about their prostate cancer outcomes assessed before and after the consultations. Results: Patients with prostate cancer, Gleason score 6 or 7, and stage Time 1 or Time 2 participated in the study. Paired consultations included on average 11,086 words spoken. The relationship between quantitative information provided in consultations and patient knowledge about their cancer outcomes followed an inverted U-shape. There was a positive association between quantitative information and patient knowledge about their cancer outcomes. However, after the amount of quantitative information exceeded 4% (422 quantitative words) in paired consultations, the relationships between knowledge and the number of quantitative words became negative. Individual differences in education were not associated with observed relationships. Conclusion: Despite concerns about patients’ capacity to process quantitative information, we found that patients’ knowledge about cancer risks is positively associated with a certain amount of quantitative information. In the consultations, patients need to receive quantitative information that is well balanced with qualitative explanations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Precarious manhood and intentions to initiate preexposure prophylaxis
           among Black sexual minority men.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objective: The use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection is significantly low among Black sexual minority men (BSMM), although this group experiences the greatest HIV burden in the United States. One contextual factor suggested to impact BSMM’s HIV prevention efforts is the concern about, and adherence to, cultural conceptions and expectations of masculinity. The present study sought to better understand the association between masculinity and PrEP uptake by examining associations between gender-relevant beliefs and perceptions, and intentions to initiate PrEP among a sample of BSMM residing in the U.S. South. Method: Participants (N = 114) completed assessments of precarious manhood beliefs, attitudes toward PrEP, concerns about PrEP use impacting support from social networks, projected perceptions of masculinity, and intentions to initiate PrEP. Results: Precarious manhood beliefs were associated with greater intention to initiate PrEP; however, the indirect path of this association through attitudes toward PrEP was associated with lower intentions to initiate PrEP. In a hierarchical regression model, projected perceptions of masculinity were associated with intentions to initiate PrEP over and above other factors considered. Specifically, believing that one will be perceived as less masculine for seeking PrEP was associated with lower intentions to initiate PrEP. Conclusions: Findings suggest that BSMM’s construal of masculinity in relation to HIV and PrEP is associated with intentions to initiate PrEP. Implications for increasing PrEP uptake among BSMM are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Four-symptom model of medical-related posttraumatic stress among adult
           cancer patients.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objective: Four symptoms of posttraumatic stress (PTSS: intrusion, avoidance, alterations in arousal and reactivity, and negative alterations in cognitions and mood) were put forth by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM–5). Patients with chronic major medical illness and their family caregivers often perceive the illness experience as traumatic, yet DSM–5 criteria precludes medical illness as a potential traumatic exposure. In this article, we address the applicability of the four symptoms to a medical population. Method: Adult patients with colorectal cancer (n = 130, M = 55.83 years old, 60.0% female, 46.9% Hispanic) and their family caregivers (n = 160, M = 51.01 years old, 72.5% female, 49.0% Hispanic) completed questionnaires around the time of cancer diagnosis and treatment initiation (Time 1 [T1]), and 1- (Time 2 [T2]) and 2- (Time 3 [T3]) year postdiagnosis. Intrusion, avoidance, and alterations in arousal and reactivity symptoms were assessed using the Impact of Events Scale–Revised and negative alterations in cognitions and mood were quantified with selected conceptually congruent items from various psychosocial measures. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis revealed good fit of the four-symptom model of PTSS for caregivers at all three times and for patients at T2. Factor loadings of the four symptoms were high, ranging from .47–.97 and .62–.96 among patients and caregivers, respectively. Conclusions: Findings extend the application of the four posttraumatic stress symptoms to patients with chronic major medical illness (cancer) and their family caregivers. Assessment and treatment of subclinical, yet substantial psychological distress precipitated by major medical illness like cancer are warranted. • Improving an old way to measure moderation effect in standardized units.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Moderation effects in multiple regression, tested usually by the inclusion of a product term, are frequently investigated in health psychology. However, several issues in presenting the moderation effects in standardized units and their associated confidence intervals are commonly observed. While an old method had been proposed to standardize variables in moderated regression before fitting a moderated regression model, this method was rarely used due to inconvenience and even when used, the confidence intervals derived were biased. Here, we attempt to solve these two problems by providing a tool to conveniently conduct standardization in moderated regression without the step of standardizing the variables beforehand and to accurately form the nonparametric bootstrapping confidence intervals for this standardized measure of moderation effects. Health psychology researchers are now equipped with a tool that can be used to report and interpret standardized moderation effects correctly. • Beliefs about influenza and avoidance of free influenza immunization among
           people with chronic diseases.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Objective: People with chronic diseases may have poor influenza-related outcomes. The study objective was to examine the association between the dimensions of the Health Belief model and noncompliance with influenza immunization. Method: study participants were community-dwelliing individuals from the Foča region (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina) listed to receive free influenza immunization for the season 2017/2018 due to chronic diseases. After vaccination season was completed, we included all nonvaccinated people and the corresponding number of vaccinated people. The data collection lasted from April to December 2018 using a sociodemographic questionnaire and modified Health Belief model Applied to Influenza. Results: The study sample consisted of 295 people of which 149 (50.5%) were immunized against influenza in the past season. Adjusted logistic regression model suggested that people who scored lower on domains of Seriousness (odds ratio [OR] = .79, 95% confidence interval [CI] [.69, .91]), Benefits (OR = .83, 95% CI [.76, .91]) and Cue to action (OR = .79, 95% CI [.73, .86]), but higher the Barriers domain (OR = 1.10, 95% CI [1.03, 1.17]), were less likely to receive vaccination in the past season. People who did not receive recommendation from a health care worker and who were never vaccinated against influenza did not comply with influenza vaccination across all models (p < .01). Conclusion: Perceiving influenza as less serious, less beneficial, having fewer cues to action, and perceiving more barriers to influenza vaccination were associated with skipping influenza immunization. Not receiving health care worker recommendation and never being vaccinated against influenza were also associated with avoidance of vaccination.
