Abstract: One of the more pivotal chapters in Galdós's 1876 novel Doña Perfecta is number 18, titled "Tropa," and it is in this chapter that the novel's tragic hero, Pepe Rey, concocts the scheme, abetted by his old friend lieutenant colonel Pinzón that will finally unleash the forces that end in Pepe's death and the insanity of his would-be bride Rosario. The chapter involves the Crown-ordered billeting of soldiers in unwilling Orbajosa homes as prelude to a campaign to stamp out reactionary resistance to the liberalizing central government (295). Abstract: This essay explores the use of gossip by Benito Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán in two of their most-well known works: Fortunata y Jacinta (1886-87) and Los Pazos de Ulloa (1886). Gossip conversations between characters are a major theme in both novels, and gossip propels plot. Moreover, as this essay explores, the narrators of both novels use an intimate, gossipy narrative voice and gossip-like narrative strategies, albeit in different ways and with different emphasis.
