  • The implementation of an intensive second language reading intervention
           program for Arabic L1 learners of English as a foreign language

      Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of focused reading interventions on the eye movement patterns and reading scores of second language (L2) learners. We compared two groups of proficiency matched Arabic L2 learners before and after an intensive reading intervention program. Two classes received a barrage of reading interventions and two classes served as comparison groups. The intervention program consisted of textual enhancement, phonological awareness training, training in word recognition, spelling instruction and oral text reading fluency. Analysis of reading scores showed a significant improvement over time, but no significant impact of the intervention. Both the intervention and comparison groups showed improvement in their eye tracking measures, but no significant difference in gains between the intervention and the comparison groups was found. The study provides a building block for future studies using focused pedagogical interventions with this particular group of learners.

  • The impact of models and reformulations on EFL primary school children’s
           noticing and written output

      Abstract: The present study aims to contribute to the literature about written corrective feedback (WCF) by addressing two under-researched aspects: on the one hand, making a comparison of models and reformulation as to their effect in noticing and incorporation of linguistic features in learners’ revised drafts; on the other hand, exploring the use of these WCF types by a group of 28 primary school learners (11–12 years old) engaged in collaborative writing. Language related episodes occurring during collaborative work and learners’ written output were examined at three different times: (i) before being given any feedback; (ii) immediately after being provided with models or reformulations; and (iii) a month later. Results show few significant differences but clear trends as to the different effect of models and reformulations on learners’ subsequent drafts.

  • The relative effects of focus on form versus focus on forms on learning
           the second conditional in English

      Abstract: While previous research has found beneficial effects for form-focused instruction (FFI), there is still contention over the relative effectiveness of different types of FFI. This study investigated the effects of focus on form (FonF) and focus on forms (FonFs), as two FFI options, on developing EFL learners’ explicit and implicit knowledge of the English present unreal conditional. Learning was measured through two testing devices: discrete-point items and oral interviews. The results indicated that while both FonF and FonFs were effective in developing the learners’ explicit and implicit knowledge in both the short and long terms, they differed in the extent to which they fostered these types of knowledge. FonF was found to be more effective in developing the learners’ implicit knowledge, whereas FonFs was more beneficial in fostering their explicit knowledge. Moreover, it was found that time had a role in consolidation of the form in the FonF group.

  • The pragmatics of L2 gestures in beginners’ classes of Italian

      Abstract: This article examines the responses that two groups of beginners of Italian in Canada (n=30) and in Italy (n=30) contributed to a multimodal exercise, where six culturally-based Italian gestures were presented alone and in combination with mini-dialogues. The main goal of this study was to encourage Italian L2 pedagogy to become more oriented towards the teaching of the pragmatics of body movements occurring during interactions. This work advocates that it is important to promote awareness of the pragmatic roles of the body from the early stages of language development to better prepare L2 learners in the recognition of the nonverbal contents communicated in a target language. One of the main results of this study suggests that combining target gestures with speech is a necessary pedagogical approach to enable the understanding of the semantics and the pragmatics of multimodal messages in L2 communication.

  • The effect of field independence on processing instruction on the
           acquisition of English passive by Iranian EFL learners

      Abstract: This work reports on a classroom-based study that investigated the role of field independence in the effectiveness of processing instruction. From a high school in Iran, fifty six learners were recruited and randomly assigned to an experimental and a comparison group. The former was taught through processing instruction while the latter received traditional output-based instruction on English passive. A sentence-level interpretation task was used in a pretest-treatment-posttest design to measure instructional effects. The results illustrated that processing instruction significantly improved learners’ acquisition of the target structure, whereas the traditional instruction was not effective. Furthermore, no interaction was found between the learners’ field independence and their performance in the immediate and delayed posttests. This could be attributed to the unique characteristic of processing instruction and its systematic nature neutralising learners’ differences and consequently creating an optimum learning condition benefitting all the learners.
