  • Improving EFL Students’ Competencies in Writing Procedure Texts
           through the Process Approach

      Abstract: Abstract. This research aims at improving learners’ competencies in writing procedure texts through a process approach. First-year students do not demonstrate sufficient mastery of writing skills. Therefore, to overcome this matter, the investigator used classroom action research. The design of the research was action research which was composed of four phases, specifically planning the action, application, observation of the action, and reflection on the action. The subject of the research was the first-year class consisting of 29 students of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo. Four instruments were employed to gather the data, i.e. observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire, and students’ writing test. The finding of the research indicated that Cycle 1 has not fulfilled the criteria of success. Related to the first criterion, 70% of the learners did at minimum 64.3% of the activities (9 activities out of 14 activities) in the observation checklist, and in Cycle 2 showed 78.5% has fulfilled the criteria of success. Concerning the second criterion 65.5% (19 learners) of the learners, gained a score on a par or more than 60, the research has fulfilled the criteria of success but required rectifying. In Cycle 2, the research finding showed 95% of the learners (28 learners), the research has fulfilled the criteria of success.  Concerning the final criterion, at least 82% of the learners (24 learners) served positive reactions to the application of the process approach as shown by the outcome of the questionnaire, observation checklist, field notes, and students’ writing test.Keywords: writing competencies; procedure texts; process approachAbstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur melalui pendekatan proses. Siswa tahun pertama tidak menunjukkan penguasaan keterampilan menulis yang cukup. Oleh karena itu, untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, peneliti menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu perencanaan tindakan, penerapan, pengamatan tindakan, dan refleksi tindakan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu yang terdiri dari 29 siswa MTs Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo. Empat instrumen digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data, yaitu daftar periksa observasi, catatan lapangan, angket, dan tes menulis siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Siklus 1 belum memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Terkait dengan kriteria pertama, 70% peserta didik melakukan minimal 64,3% tindakan (9 kegiatan dari 14 kegiatan) dalam daftar periksa observasi, dan pada Siklus 2 menunjukkan 78,5% telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Untuk kriteria kedua 65,5% (19 peserta didik) peserta didik, memperoleh nilai setara atau lebih dari 60, penelitian telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan tetapi perlu diperbaiki. Pada Siklus 2, hasil penelitian menunjukkan 95% peserta didik (28 peserta didik), penelitian telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Untuk kriteria akhir, setidaknya 82% peserta didik (24 peserta didik) memberikan reaksi positif terhadap penerapan pendekatan proses seperti yang ditunjukkan oleh hasil angket.Kata kunci: kompetensi menulis; teks prosedur; pendekatan proses

  • Quality of Translation for Post in Social media Facebook

      Abstract: The focus of this research is the quality of translation produced by Translation for Post on social media Facebook. As one of the social media with the most users, Facebook always improves its service features such as Market places, job vacancies, and even online games. One of the interesting things is a translation feature on Facebook, namely Translation for Post. After the researcher collected the data and analyzed it, there were 50% less accurate data and 70% less acceptable data. While for the quality of the readability, about 30% is included in the medium readability. Translation for Post is entered into the machine translator, so it is not surprising that there are vocabulary limitations or appropriate equivalents in the target language.

  • Exploring Two Different ranslation Versions of Culinary Specific Terms the
           Subtitle of lm 'Chef'

      Abstract: Abstract. This paper attempts to unfold the phenomena of two different translation versions of culinary terms in film ‘Chef’, namely the subtitle version of ‘Siberian’ and of ‘Agent Nas’. The objectives of the study are to describe the translation techniques used in translating the culinary specific terms in each subtitle version and to explain the influence of the translation techniques used towards the accuracy, acceptability, and the readability of the culinary specific term translation. The study is a product, context, and participant-oriented translation research based on qualitative paradigm that employs a case study model. The data collection techniques are document analysis and focus group discussion and the data technique analysis adopt the principles of ethnography manifested in the use of domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis as well as finding cultural values. The result of the study shows that the two subtitlers have different frequency level in using the techniques and that the techniques used affect the quality of the culinary term translation. The most obvious distinction is that Siberian resorts to many pure borrowings compared to Agent Nas. This translates to a good score of accuracy, but potentially reduce the level of acceptability of the translation. In addition, Agent Nas resorts to annotation technique that is meant to improve the understanding of the viewers while Siberian does not. All in all, the overall translation quality of culinary terms produced by the two subtitlers is almost equal with Agent Nas version slightly better than Siberian.Keywords: culinary specific term translation; translation techniques; translation quality; subtitleAbstrak. Penelitian ini berusaha untuk mengungkap fenomena dua versi terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner yang berbeda dalam film ‘Chef’, yakni versi subtitle ‘Siberian’ dan versi ‘Agent Nas’. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan istilah khusus kuliner pada masing-masing versi subtitle dan menjelaskan dampak penggunaan teknik penerjemahan tersebut terhadap tingkat keakuratan, keberterimaan, dan keterbacaan terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian penerjemahan yang berorientasi pada produk, konteks, dan partisipan yang berdasarkan pada paradigma kualitatif yang berbentuk studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah analisis dokumen dan diskusi kelompok fokus dan teknik analisis data yang digunakan menerapkan prinsip etnografi dalam bentuk analisis dokumen, taksonomi, komponensial, serta menemukan tema budaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bawha dua penerjemah tersebut memiliki tingkat frekuensi penggunaan teknik penerjemahan yang berbeda dan teknik yang digunakan berdampak pada kualitas terjemahan yang dihasilkan. Perbedaan yang paling mencolok adalah penggunaan teknik peminjaman murni oleh Siberian jauh lebih sering dilakukan dibandingkan dengan Agen Nas. Namun demikian, Agent Nas juga ditemukan menggunakan teknik anotasi yang dimaksudkan untuk memudahkan penonton untuk memahami terjemahan sedangkan Siberian sama sekali tidak menggunakannya. Secara garis besar, kualitas keseluruhan terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner yang dihasilkan oleh kedua versi subtitle hampir sama dengan nilai Agent Nas sedikit lebih tinggi dari Siberian.   • English-Indonesian Subtitling Strategies of Lara Jean’s Utterances in
           “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” Movie on Netflix

      Abstract: Abstract. Streaming platforms, such as Netflix, gained their popularity significantly during the pandemic prominently since people avoid watching films in theatres. Thus, the study of translation, specifically subtitling, is necessary since there will be more films with different languages to be produced and streamed by people from different countries. This research aims to study and interpret the subtitling strategies used on Netflix, specifically in “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” movie. Employing a qualitative library research method and document analysis for the data collecting technique, this research unveils the subtitling strategies as well as the subtitle quality of Lara Jean’s utterances in “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” film on Netflix. The data source is chosen since the film is considered popular as it is the adaptation of the best-selling novel “Always and Forever, Lara Jean.” From the 428 utterances, it is discovered that there are seven strategies applied; respectively paraphrase, transfer, condensation, deletion, expansion, imitation, and transcription. Meanwhile, three strategies that are not found are decimation, dislocation, and resignation. Paraphrase is the most frequently applied strategy since many utterances require localization and alteration to become clearer for the Indonesian audience. On the other hand, decimation, dislocation, and resignation are not used respectively due to the rate of the film, translatable utterances, and soundtracks that are not translated.Keywords: film; netflix; subtitling strategies; subtitling quality; translationAbstrak. Layanan streaming, seperti Netflix, meraih popularitas secara signifikan selama pandemi karena masyarakat menghindari menonton film langsung di bioskop. Oleh karena itu, penelitian mengenai terjemahan, khususnya subtitling, diperlukan karena film dalam bahasa asing akan semakin banyak diproduksi dan ditonton oleh orang-orang dari berbagai negara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan memaknai strategi subtitling yang digunakan oleh Netflix, khususnya pada film “To All the Boys: Always and Forever.” Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan mengungkap strategi serta kualitas subtitling dari ucapan Lara Jean dalam trilogi “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” di Netflix. Sumber data tersebut dipilih karena film yang dianggap populer ini merupakan adaptasi dari novel “Always and Forever, Lara Jean.” Dari 428 ujaran, terdapat tujuh strategi yang diterapkan, yaitu parafrase, transfer, pemampatan, penghapusan, penambahan, imitasi, dan transkripsi. Sedangkan tiga strategi yang tidak diterapkan yaitu desimasi, dislokasi, dan angkat tangan. Parafrase merupakan strategi yang paling banyak ditemukan karena terdapat banyak ujaran yang disesuaikan dengan konteks lokal dan diubah agar menjadi lebih jelas bagi penonton Indonesia. Sementara itu, desimasi, dislokasi, dan angkat tangan tidak digunakan karena kategori film, ujaran yang dapat diterjemahkan, dan lagu yang tidak diterjemahkan.Kata kunci: film; kualitas subtitling; netflix; strategi subtitling; terjemahan

  • Senior High School Second-Grade Language Students’ Perceptions on
           the Use of YouTube Videos

      Abstract: Abstract. YouTube is a website that provides a lot of videos from all over the world. Then, YouTube also offers many benefits for the educational area, such as for learning a language. This study aimed to discover a private Senior High School second-grade students’ perceptions of using YouTube videos in language learning. The participants of this study consisted of ten second graders of language programs in that Senior High School. The data in this study were gathered by distributing open-ended questionnaires and doing some semi-structured interviews. This study found that YouTube has been very familiar to the students because most students watched YouTube every day for almost five hours. However, students faced some challenges and difficulties while learning the language through YouTube videos. Hopefully, this study can be useful for teachers and students to use YouTube effectively to learn languages.Keywords: YouTube; perceptions; language-program students; language learning.Abstrak. YouTube adalah sebuah situs internet yang menyediakan banyak video dari seluruh dunia. Situs ini menawarkan banyak manfaat dalam bidang pendidikan termasuk pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa kelas dua sebuah SMA swasta tentang penggunaan video dari situs YouTube dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Responden penelitian ini terdiri dari sepuluh siswa kelas 2 dari sebuah program bahasa di SMA tersebut. Data diperoleh dari kuesioner “open-ended” dan juga wawancara “semi-structured”. Dari data, ditemukan bahwa YouTube sudah sangat dikenal dikalangan siswa karena sebagian besar siswa menonton vdeo YouTube setiap hari selama hampir lima jam. Namun demikian, ada juga beberapa tantangan dan kesulitan yang di hadapi siswa saat belajar bahasa melalui situs YouTube. Penelitian ini diharapkan bisa bermanfaat bagi guru maupun siswa dalam belajar bahasa melalui YouTube sebagai sarana belajar yang efektif.Kata kunci: YouTube, persepsi, mahasiswa program bahasa, pembelajaran bahasa

  • Syntactic and Morphological Analysis of Portfolio Reports of Kindergarten
           Teachers in Surabaya, Indonesia

      Abstract: Abstract. As part of a community service project aimed at providing a customized English course to International Kindergarten teachers in Surabaya, Indonesia, this study investigated the types of grammatical (syntactic and morphological) errors made by the kindergarten teachers in the portfolio reports they wrote, and why the errors were committed. The data were taken from 9 (nine) portfolio reports of those teachers, and interview transcripts to three of them. The writers analyzed the errors using the Linguistic Category Taxonomy based on Dulay et al (1982) and categorized the reasons behind those errors into either Interlingual or Intralingual Errors (Richard, 1974). The result showed that Syntax – Noun Phrase type of error made up the biggest total number of errors (42 %), followed by Syntax – Verb Phrase (31%) and lastly, morphological – third-person singular incorrect (12%). This study also found that the most frequent source of errors is Intralingual in nature (89%). Overall, the results showed that any training aimed at those kindergarten teachers in particular, and in teacher training colleges in general, should address those most frequently committed errors. This Error Analysis on kindergarten teachers’ portfolio reports is the first in this field and constitutes a valuable input for teacher training colleges of Early Childhood Education program.Keywords: error analysis, interlingual error, intralingual error, kindergarten teachers, linguistic category taxonomy, portfolio reports, Abstrak. Sebagai bagian dari kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris kepada guru-guru PAUD internasional di Surabaya, Indonesia, penelitian ini menyelidiki tipe-tipe kesalahan tata Bahasa (dari segi sintaks dan morfologi) yang dilakukan oleh guru-guru PAUD dalam menulis rapor portofolio anak didik, dan juga mengapa kesalahan tersebut terjadi. Data diambil dari 9 (Sembilan) rapor portofolio para guru PAUD tersebut, beserta transkrip wawancara kepada tiga guru. Penulis menganalisis kesalahan tersebut dengan menggunakan Taksonomi Kategori Linguistik berdasarkan Dulay et al (1982). Sumber kesalahan tersebut dibagi ke Interlingual atau Intralingual, menurut Richard (1974). Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa total kesalahan terbesar (42%) terjadi pada bidang Sintaks yaitu pembentukan Noun Phrase, diikuti oleh bidang Sintaks juga yaitu pembentukan Verb Phrase (31%), dan yang terkahir adalah bidang Morfologi yaitu kesalahan bentuk orang ketiga tunggal (12%).Pada keseluruhan, hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan Bahasa Inggris bagi para guru PAUD tersebut pada khususnya, maupun pada institusi keguruan pada umumnya, perlu memperhatikan aspek sintaks dan morfologi tersebut di atas. Error Analysis pada rapor portofolio ini baru pertama kali ini dilakukan, dan dapat memberi sumbangan berarti pada pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di institusi keguruan PAUD di Indonesia.Kata kunci: analisis kesalahan, Bahasa Inggris, guru PAUD, kesalahan interlingual, kesalahan intralingual, rapor portofolio, taksonomi kategori linguistik
