Abstract: For all their lives, my parents and many people of their World War II generation saved scraps of aluminum foil, washing them off and carefully folding them away in a drawer for reuse. They were frugal, for sure, but it was a frugality wrought by growing up during an economic depression. My father often remarked that on the farm where he grew up, they had to sell their livestock because they couldn't afford to feed them. The feed for the cattle was cheap, he said, but there wasn't money to buy it. My mother's family lost their home during the Depression and was forced to travel to the northern states to harvest crops. She would never forget the "short hoes" that required the pickers to stoop over to harvest ... Read More

  • "Screw the Pandemic, I Had to Show Up": Latino/a Experience and Racial
           Activism during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 2020, as the world was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, which in the United States disproportionately affected communities of color, there was another crisis—racial injustice—that boiled over as a result of yet another string of prominent incidents of police brutality. In the United States, police kill people of color at disproportionate rates to white people. Given the disparate impact of the pandemic on communities of color, many people of color were facing concurrent crises in the summer of 2020.1 Following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, among others, protests erupted across the country and the world, including in Minneapolis; Portland, Oregon; and Austin, Texas. Despite the pandemic ... Read More

  • "We Need to Be Human": Using Oral Histories of Latino/a Staff and Faculty
to Examine Neoliberalism in the Age of COVID-19

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: During the 2020 spring semester, the spread of COVID-19 became a major concern for colleges and universities across the United States. The rise in COVID-19 cases reached such high levels that the New York Times tracked them to anticipate possible deadly outbreaks.1 Almost 400,000 COVID-19 cases were reported on more than 1,800 campuses by December 11, 2020.2 Given this significant number of COVID-19 cases, I set out as part of Voces of a Pandemic—a rapid-response oral history project created to capture and archive the stories of the Latino/a community during the pandemic—to explore how the pandemic affected higher education, particularly Latino/a staff and faculty. Latino/a individuals were among the populations ... Read More

  • Exploring the Latino COVID Experience through Oral Histories: Stories to
           Inform Research

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic posed unexpected challenges for communities worldwide. In the United States, COVID-19 led to approximately 87 million cases of the virus and more than 1 million deaths as of June 2022, leaving a lasting impact on US society as well as the finances and health of the nation.1 In addition, the pandemic and subsequent social distancing orders created physical, mental, financial, and educational strains that disproportionately affected people of color, particularly Latinos.2 To document the experiences of Latinos during this crucial time, the director of the University of Texas at Austin (UT) Voces Oral History Center (Voces Center), Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, launched a new oral history project in ... Abstract: Centro Cultural Aztlán, a nonprofit cultural center located in San Antonio, Texas, conducts oral interviews with artists and preserves the oral narratives to promote Chicano and Latino arts and culture in its public programming work. A group of young activists associated with the Chicano movement established Centro Aztlán in 1977. The founders envisioned an organization that would reconnect Mexican American communities with their ancient cultural roots through public events celebrating ancestral traditions and promoting the production of Mexican cultural knowledge over generations. Over the past forty-five years, the organization has presented visual art exhibitions, community celebrations, arts markets, festivals ... Read More

Abstract: What—and when—was your introduction to oral history'First, I am grateful and humbled by this opportunity to share my life in oral history with the US Latina & Latino Oral History Journal. Thank you for this honor!I never took an oral history course as an undergraduate. [Ortiz received an associate's degree from Olympic Community College in 1988 and then earned his bachelor's from Evergreen State College in 1990.] I began learning the craft of oral history as an organizer with the United Farm Workers of Washington State. During the eight-year boycott of Chateau Ste. Michelle Wines, where vineyard workers were struggling for union representation, I was frequently asked to give workshops about the history of the labor ... Read More

  • Foro: The Civil Rights in Black and Brown Project

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In February 2022 the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration convened oral historians Katherine Bynum, Sandra Enríquez, and Joel Zapata to discuss their oral historical research in Texas, Missouri, Arizona, and Oregon. The center's director, Stephen Pitti, and Texas historian Max Krochmal led a conversation that focused on the Civil Rights in Black and Brown Oral History Project, an effort to collect, interpret, and disseminate new oral history interviews with Latinx communities, African Americans, and Anglo-Americans in Texas. The conversation in part provides an account of the recently published Civil Rights in Black and Brown: Histories of Resistance and Struggle in Texas ... Read More

  • Border Medicine: A Transcultural History of Mexican American Curanderismo
           by Brett Hendrickson (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Border Medicine: A Transcultural History of Mexican American Curanderismo, Brett Hendrickson, an associate professor of religious studies and a former pastor in Arizona, argues that the Mexican American religious healing known as curanderismo has had an impact on American religious history. He examines the relationship between curanderismo and American metaphysical medicine and healing while focusing on transcultural exchanges. In this book, the author hopes to reframe history to accurately portray Mexican American curanderismo on the border as a central historical piece of American religion and alternative medicine. The author concludes by comparing curanderismo to other transcultural exchanges to determine ... Read More

  • Conversations with Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Writers by Hector A.
           Torres (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Spanglish, magical realism, and borderlands are arguably quintessential aspects of the Chicana/o zeitgeist. In Conversations with Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Writers, Hector A. Torres takes us through a historical interrogation of Chicana/o literature by way of interviews with prominent writers of our time and uncovers the ways these conceptualizations came to life. He interviews writers about their families, childhood, education, and the trajectory of their careers. The book begins by tracing the genealogy of Chicana/o literature in reflecting on the creation of the Chicana/o literary canon. The middle of the book reflects on the ways Chicana feminisms and mestiza consciousness influenced and in effect ... Read More

  • Escape to Miami: An Oral History of the Cuban Rafter Crisis by Elizabeth
           Campisi (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Cuban rafter crisis came to a head in 1994, when thousands of Cubans were intercepted and sent to the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay. In 1994, President Clinton labeled Cubans fleeing on rafts through the Florida Straits as "illegal refugees," changing the migratory status of Cubans fleeing the island. This change in policy was an extension of Cold War and postrevolutionary Cuban diplomatic relations. Escape to Miami examines how the four decades of Cuban-US relations after the Cuban Revolution affected Cubans on the island and in Miami. This oral history provides deeper insight into how the military base at Guantánamo provided a prototype for the imprisonment and torture of "enemy combatants" there after ... Read More
