  Abstract: For all their lives, my parents and many people of their World War II generation saved scraps of aluminum foil, washing them off and carefully folding them away in a drawer for reuse. They were frugal, for sure, but it was a frugality wrought by growing up during an economic depression. My father often remarked that on the farm where he grew up, they had to sell their livestock because they couldn't afford to feed them. The feed for the cattle was cheap, he said, but there wasn't money to buy it. My mother's family lost their home during the Depression and was forced to travel to the northern states to harvest crops.   Abstract: In 2020, as the world was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, which in the United States disproportionately affected communities of color, there was another crisis—racial injustice—that boiled over as a result of yet another string of prominent incidents of police brutality. In the United States, police kill people of color at disproportionate rates to white people.   Abstract: During the 2020 spring semester, the spread of COVID-19 became a major concern for colleges and universities across the United States. The rise in COVID-19 cases reached such high levels that the New York Times tracked them to anticipate possible deadly outbreaks.1 Almost 400,000 COVID-19 cases were reported on more than 1,800 campuses by December 11, 2020.2 Given this significant number of COVID-19 cases, I set out as part of Voces of a Pandemic—a rapid-response oral history project created to capture and archive the stories of the Latino/a community during the pandemic—to explore how the pandemic affected higher education, particularly Latino/a staff and faculty.   Abstract: Centro Cultural Aztlán, a nonprofit cultural center located in San Antonio, Texas, conducts oral interviews with artists and preserves the oral narratives to promote Chicano and Latino arts and culture in its public programming work. A group of young activists associated with the Chicano movement established Centro Aztlán in 1977. The founders envisioned an organization that would reconnect Mexican American communities with their ancient cultural roots through public events celebrating ancestral traditions and promoting the production of Mexican cultural knowledge over generations.   Abstract: In Border Medicine: A Transcultural History of Mexican American Curanderismo, Brett Hendrickson, an associate professor of religious studies and a former pastor in Arizona, argues that the Mexican American religious healing known as curanderismo has had an impact on American religious history. He examines the relationship between curanderismo and American metaphysical medicine and healing while focusing on transcultural exchanges.   Abstract: The Cuban rafter crisis came to a head in 1994, when thousands of Cubans were intercepted and sent to the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay. In 1994, President Clinton labeled Cubans fleeing on rafts through the Florida Straits as "illegal refugees," changing the migratory status of Cubans fleeing the island. This change in policy was an extension of Cold War and postrevolutionary Cuban diplomatic relations. Escape to Miami examines how the four decades of Cuban-US relations after the Cuban Revolution affected Cubans on the island and in Miami.
