    • Authors: Japan Intakalaya, Theerawat Theerapojjanee
      Pages: 223 - 250
Abstract: This article presents differences between Simplified Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji characters that may cause problems of Simplified Chinese character writing for learners of Chinese with a Japanese language proficiency. This research aims to: (1) analyze differences between the appearance of Simplified Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji characters; (2) study the statistical proportion of differences between aforementioned character sets; and (3) synthesize precautions of Simplified Chinese character writing for learners of Chinese with a Japanese language proficiency. The data studied in this research are from 3,500 commonly used Chinese characters and 2,136 commonly used Japanese Kanji characters. The analysis of differences between the appearance of the characters relies on the Chinese and Japanese character dictionaries with the character writing concept of Wang Xiurong (2013). The finding of the research was that there are 2 types of differences between the appearance of Simplified Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji characters. The first type is the differences that do not affect the interpretation but different from the writing tradition. Most of the differences are caused by the stroke style of the character. The second type is the differences that affect the interpretation which are caused by the change of character simplification of Simplified Chinese character and Japanese Kanji character. Most of the differences are due to the independently different form of the character’s counterpart between two languages.

    • Authors: Surasit Amornwanitsak
      Pages: 317 - 357

Abstract: This article aims to present the relationship of Interlocutors and the use of Address terms in modern Chinese, applying Pragmatic theory which states that people use language to do things, and use language differently depending on the situation they are in. The purpose of research is therefore to find out the use of Chinese address terms based on three factors: gender, social status and degrees of intimacy, and emotions between interlocutors. The samples of Chinese address terms in this research were collected from eighteen Chinese tv series on WeTv app (2018-2021). The results were found as follows; 1) Gender factor not only influenced the forms of Chinese address, but also influenced the choice of address terms. 2) Social status and degrees of intimacy are two factors influencing the choice of Chinese address terms. The speakers address intimate interlocutors who have the equal or lower social status by their’s “Name”. In contrast, the speakers used “Position/Status/Career” and “Male/Female address term” to address persons of higher social status or older person. 3) Emotional factor, Chinese people used the similar forms of address when they feel normal, sad or fear, but they used “Other Nouns” to address addressee when they feel happy or angry.

  • Intertextuality and Chinese National Image Construction: A Case Study of
           Chinese News Discourse about COVID-19

    • Authors: Siqi Yao
      Pages: 386 - 411
Abstract: This article studies the Chinese national image conveyed through ancient Chinese poetic referential intertextuality in Chinese newspapers during the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to the Fairclough model of critical discourse analysis (CDA) related to using intertextuality strategy. Sixteen items of data were collected from Chinese digital newspapers from April 2020 to April 2021 and analyzed. Results were that most Chinese newspapers used intertextuality strategy by quoting ancient poetry in news discourse coverage of COVID-19, mostly through direct references to Chinese literature, classic poetry, classic Confucian literature and poetic works by foreign scholars. Referencing ancient Chinese poetry may reflect Chinese national image in three aspects: 1) international exchange 2) responsibility and 3) abiding morality. This intertextuality may transmit positive Chinese anti-pandemic imagery and publicize the excellent Chinese traditional culture. It also emphasized the significance and the value of building “A Global Community of Health for Mankind” consciousness during the pandemic prevention processes as well as deepen the understanding of China by all countries in the world.
