  • AN ANALYSIS OF INDONESIAN-ENGLISH CODE MIXING USED BY MALE AND FEMALE
           BROADCASTERS AT SWARAUNIB RADIO STATION

    • Authors: Novri Ferdiansyah, Arasuli Arasuli, Alamsyah Harahap
      Pages: 1 - 11
Abstract: The objectives of this research were to find out 1). the most common types of code-mixing used by male and female broadcasters at Swaraunib radio station 2).to find out the reasons for using Indonesian - English code-mixing by male and female broadcasters at Swaraunib Radio station. The subjects of this study were 6 broadcasters at Swaraunib radio station, with 3 male and 3 female broadcasters. The design of this research was descriptive, used quantitative as well as qualitative data. The result showed that there were three types of code-mixing proposed by Hoffman. The results for male broadcasters showed that there were 282 (87%) cases of intra-sentential code mixing, 31 (9,6%) cases of intra-lexical code mixing, and 11 (3,4%) involvement in a change of pronunciation. Meanwhile, the results for female broadcasters showed that there were 357 (89,9%) cases of intra-sentential code mixing, 28 (7,1%) cases of intra-lexical code mixing, and 12 (3%) involvement in a change of pronunciation. While for reasons of using code-mixing, female broadcasters and male broadcasters both used seven reasons from Hoffman's theory. The reasons were talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, and expressing group identity and solidarity In addition, female broadcasters using code-mixing tended to be more conscious and intentional than male broadcasters, and female broadcasters were more expressive than male broadcasters in the use of code-mixing. In conclusion, although the most common types and reasons for using code mixing between male and female broadcasters were similar, there were still differences that were influenced by gender factors. However, code mixing can be used to create a good and interesting communication, especially in broadcasting media.

  • ENGLISH VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR PROFICIENCIES OF SMPN 17 STUDENTS IN
           BENGKULU CITY

    • Authors: Reza Muhamad, Zahrida, Mukhrizal
      Pages: 12 - 18
Abstract: The objectives of this research were to find out “how the student’s English vocabulary and grammar proficiencies were” . The population was all students of SMP N 17 Bengkulu City. The samples were approximately 57 students, with detail were 4 classes of 7th grade. The design of the research was descriptive quantitative. The instrument was English grammar and vocabulary test to measure students’ skill. The results of the research showed that the total average score from grade 7th, their total average score was 33, their average vocabulary score was 20 and then their average grammar score was 44. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the 7th grade students’ vocabulary and grammar skills of SMPN 17 Bengkulu City were still low, also the difference between their average grammar and vocabularyscores of grade 7 was very far, but both’s scores were still under the minimum score (75). This phenomenon could have been prevented if junior high school students had received English background knowledge when they were still in elementary school. This phenomenon is what the researchers are trying to show that this is the effect of not getting background knowledge of English when they were in elementary school. Of course this will cause problems for these students in the future, because the level of difficulty in terms of English study they will encounter in the future will be more difficult.

  • A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF SEVERAL THESIS ABSTRACTS BY
           UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITAS BENGKULU

    • Authors: Bayu Wijaya, Safnil Arsyad, Mei Hardiah
      Pages: 19 - 26
Abstract: The abstract in every research paper has always served as an attention-grabber, either encouraging readers to continue reading the research or discouraging them from doing so. This research is aimed to find the most dominant move and step of thesis abstract by undergraduate students and to identify any differences. This research used a mix method approach. The design of this research is descriptive, using quantitative as well as qualitative data. The data was taken from thirty undergraduate thesis abstracts of Education faculty from University of Bengkulu who graduated between 2019 to 2022. Hyland’s five-move model will be used for research instrument. The result showed that, the majority and most dominant moves that found were Move 2 (purpose) 100%, followed by Move 3 (Method) 97%, Move 4 (Product) 97% and Move 5 (Conclusion) 80%, while the most dominant Step that found was Step 1 of Move 2 (Stating the purpose directly) 100%. Also, there is no significant differences of Move from the three study programs (English, Physic and Guidance and Counselling). Conclusion, most of the students were simply following the “Thesis Writing Guidelines” in writing their abstracts. Therefore, it would be better for the department in charge to revise the guidelines and use this research as a reference or guidance for a better abstract writing.
