  • For a theory of literary translation – language and culture,
           translation and culture

    • Abstract: The article deals with the issue of translation in relation to the concept of culture and with the role played by language as a mediation tool for values that pass from one reality to another, bearing witness to the complexity and diversity of the vision of the world proposed by cultures and different languages. The theoretical evolution known to the translation field especially during the twentieth century has made it possible to broaden its a priori boundaries of a linguistic nature, up to the establishment of an approach in which translation has increasingly dialogued with cultural dimensions traditionally placed outside its field of action, also taking into account realities and circumstances closely connected with current events and with socio-cultural evolution.

  • Literary translation in the era of digital humanities and the questioning
of the primacy of the source text: for a memography of Molière's
           translations

    • Abstract: The article focuses on the role of Digital Humanities in the creation of a new cyberinfrastructure that relies on the concept of Translation Memory (TM) to create advanced tools in Computer Assisted Translation (CAT). In this new cyberinfrastructure, the source text is broken down into segments and cannot exist in isolation at the same time as older translations act as new source material. The article explores the possibility of establishing a transmedial cartography of the transfer of meaning in literary translations using the notion of a “memographie” prevalent in Digital Humanities. Modelled on hybrid databases, facilitating the creation of tropes in literary language not only from the source text but also from past translations, memographies can facilitate the enhancement of the creative power of the translator in future literary translations. The article uses short extracts from Anglo-American translations of Molière in its case studies, starting from The Playhouse to be Let by Sir William D'Avenant, staged in 1663, up to more recent translations by Richard Wilbur. This is done to illustrate the functioning of the source text and target text coupling in a memorographic plexus that could serve as a new starting point in literary information retrieval systems.

  • “Fratelli dei cani”: Autobiographical and autodiegetic interferences
of the incipit of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Orestiade

    • Abstract: Starting from the examination of a marginal text like Letter of the translator, this article analyzes Pier Paolo Pasolini’s translation of the prologue to Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. The paper delves into the central image of Pasolini’s Letter: the comparison between the translator and a dog picking a bone. This juxtaposition alludes to the method used by the translator, which is based on an instinctive approach to the text, similar to that of a beast. I think that this rhetorical figure was suggested to Pasolini by the figure of the lookout on the roof of Atrides’ royal palace; his solitary nocturnal vigil is compared to the derelict condition of a dog. In the association between man and dog made by Aeschylus at the beginning of his trilogy (Orestea), Pasolini finds an expressive way very congenial to himself. In fact, this analogy is used in many points of his entire production as a writer to indicate the marginalization of the intellectual. The immediate proximity that the contemporary poet feels to the canine world implies an unconscious identification of the translator with the hardships of the Aeschylean character. This direct relationship between the human sphere and the animal sphere would explain the free and personal aspect of some interpretative choices about the introductory monologue of the Greek tragedy. It would also explain why Pasolini intended to reuse the prologue of Agamemnon, which he translated into a chapter of the posthumous novel entitled Petrolio.

  • Writing the History of French Translation in the 21st Century. Towards a
           New Paradigm'

    • Abstract: To write the history of translation in the digital age, we must devise and use new analytical tools. Starting from this premise, this study proposes to examine the ways in which recent technologies influence (the quality of) research in the history of translation as well as to discuss scientific work that seeks to “modernize” the history of translation in accordance with contemporary trends. By adopting a descriptive approach, I will review several traditional materials and instruments of analysis that can be identified in the specialized literature, and then I will move on to modern ones. A corpus of academic texts about the history of French translation serves my purposes well, given the existence of a large body of translation studies of “French expression” produced since the latter half of the 2oth century by numerous Francophone researchers. Main preliminary findings show that we can witness a paradigm shift and that research in the history of translation must change and adapt itself to the current developments that have impacted every field of work.

  • Linguistic variation in the by Carlo Emilio Gadda: translation strategies
           in the two French versions

    • Abstract: From the point of view of linguistic variation, this contribution compares the two translations of Quer pasticciaccio brutto de via Merulana by Carlo Emilio Gadda, made by Louis Bonalumi and Jean-Paul Manganaro. The comparison aims to highlight the differences between the two translations, dated 1963 and 2016, respectively, both published by Éditions du Seuil, in order to explore which version of the novel the French reader can access.

  • The database “Italian writers translated into Romanian: 1990-2023”.
           Analysis and proposals

    • Abstract: The article presents the database Italian writers translated into Romanian: 1990-2023, created and edited by Afrodita Carmen Cionchin, which can be consulted online in the bilingual intercultural magazine “Orizzonti culturali italo-romeni / Orizonturi culturale italo-române”. This is the first vast study that offers a bird’s eye view on the reception of Italian literature in Romania in the years 1990-2023, quantitatively analyzing translations, which exceed 2.200 publications, for a total of 290 publishers. The author lists the most translated Italian books (and first editions) and classifies Romanian publishing houses based on the number of Italian titles published, through targeted observations, reports and proposals.

  • About ’s Translations in Hungarian. Notes and Observations on Ádám
           Nádasdy’s Translation, Magvető 2016

    • Abstract: The first Hungarian translations of Dante’s masterpiece have been published starting from the mid-19th Century. Among these translations, the most important and successful has been the one by Mihály Babits (published between 1912 and 1922). During the 20th century, several other translations were published, but in anthologies or in an incomplete form. Within this frame and tradition, university professor and translator Ádám Nádasdy (born 1947) published, in 2016, his own Dante translation, in unrhymed iambic pentameter. This paper aims to present the Hungarian translations of Divina Commedia, focusing on the characteristics of the latest one, by Ádám Nádasdy.

  • The role of Slovak translators in the dissemination of Slovak literature
in Cuba between 1960 and 1989

    • Abstract: Despite the fact that, as renowned translators such as Anthony Pym (2009) or, in the Slovak cultural context, Katarína Bednárová (2015) have stated, the history of translation cannot be written without considering who those who made the interpretation and understanding of the translated works possible were, the reality is that, in general terms, translators continue to be the great unknowns. For this reason, in this article, we have set out to investigate the figures of those men and women whose work made it possible for Slovak literature to reach a particular Spanish-speaking reading public, that of Cuba, in a specific period of history, that between 1960 and 1989.

  • The importance of terminological knowledge in specialized translation

    • Abstract: This paper focuses upon the translatorꞌs role as a language mediator in professional communication. During the translation process, terminological knowledge is essential since the information conveyed by a scientific and technical writing is encoded in terms which give access to more elaborate knowledge structures. Additionally, the translator faces situations in which a term is borrowed either from the general language or from a field of knowledge and utilized in another field. Therefore, the main challenges encountered by a translator are: identifying the terms, understanding the termsꞌ meaning, finding the suitable termsꞌ correspondents in the target language.

  • The translation of cultural references and wordplays in advertising
           slogans

    • Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze how French cultural allusions and wordplays in advertising slogans can be transposed into Romanian. Drawing on a series of concepts and theoretical observations concerning the field of advertising translation, we will outline the difficulties, the constraints, and the main strategies involved in this particular kind of translation. Secondly, we would like to analyze some concrete examples of advertising campaigns initiated in France and exported to Romania. Thirdly, we will examine the translation/localization of the advertising slogans into Romanian and we will discuss the solutions found by the translators to overcome the linguistic and the cultural difficulties raised by the translation process.
