  • The exploration of Indonesian students’ attributions in EFL reading
           and writing classes

    • Authors: Yustinus Calvin Gai Mali
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: The exploration of Indonesian students’ attributions in EFL reading and writing classesAlthough the previous studies have given so much attention to exploring the students’ attributions in various settings and academic levels, there is a scarcity of research that presents and compares findings on the attributions of Indonesian university students, specifically in the reading (receptive skill) and writing (productive skill) courses. This study researched students’ attributions in their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing and reading classrooms at a private university in Indonesia. The research participants were 161 students who responded to an online questionnaire that explored their attributions for the success or failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. The study revealed that most of the students in both courses could successfully achieve the learning objectives, and there were no attribution differences in the courses. Their effort and positive teacher’s performances were mostly cited attributions for the success, whereas low ability and lack of effort were the primary attributions for some students’ failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. Practical strategies to support teaching and learning in the EFL reading and writing classes and directions for further research were presented.

  • Incorporating critical thinking and English as a medium of instruction for
           elementary school students

    • Authors: Siti Muniroh, Sri Rachmajanti, Ekaning Dewanti Laskmi, Jasmine Nur Fadhillah, Nur Nilam Ayu Saputri
      Pages: 17 - 35
Abstract: Incorporating critical thinking and English as a medium of instruction for elementary school studentsThis case study aims to find out how teachers of the International Class Program at an elementary school in Malang incorporated critical thinking (CT) pedagogy in teaching subjects with English as a Medium of Instruction. Eighteen teachers filled in an online questionnaire, and two of them were interviewed. Analysis of one pre-recorded video for English class (lasted for 13 minutes) and one video of Math class delivered through Zoom meeting (lasted for 29 minutes) was done to investigate how teachers triggered students’ thinking in the classroom practice. Also, an analysis of three lesson plans was done to dig further information about teachers’ teaching practices. The findings indicated that the teachers have practical knowledge of CT pedagogy from reading and workshops that were not necessarily focused on CT. Textbooks were mainly used to guide the teachers’ teaching, supported by audio-visual media. Questions primarily were used to trigger students’ higher-order thinking by connecting the texts with the students’ experiences in real life. Despite the implicit policy of CT, the teachers have implemented CT strategies in the International Class Program. Overall, the teachers have played as more knowledgeable others that facilitated the students’ learning to think critically. However, they were not confident whether the teaching material they were developed supported CT pedagogy implementation. Thus, the study findings revealed their need for supervisors to evaluate the content of teaching material and practical guidance to conduct thinking routines for the young learners in the subjects with English as a medium of instruction.

  • The translation of personal pronouns in French discourses into Indonesian

    • Authors: Sajarwa Sajarwa
      Pages: 36 - 48
Abstract: The translation of personal pronouns in French discourses into IndonesianTranslation is the transfer of a message from a source-language text into an equivalent target-language text. Cultural differences between a source language and a target language always leave marks on a translation process. Language as part of culture influences the minds of its speakers, especially translators. French literary texts (as source texts) and their Indonesian translations (target texts) can provide examples of the differences between the reasoning process of French literary writers and that of Indonesian translators, particularly in the translation of pronouns with this topic being the focus of this present study. By carefully investigating how pronouns are translated in three French novels – Michael Tournier’s (1971) Vendredi ou la Vie Sauvage, Amin Maalout’s (1993) Le Rocher de Tanios, Gustave Flaubert’s (1972) Madame Bovary – this study’s analysis shows that the translation of French pronouns in literary texts into Indonesian results in various forms, namely pronouns, lexical equivalences, repetitions, and substitutions. The translation of the pronoun on, which signifies passive voice, results in equivalence in meaning despite the absence of formal correspondence, and thus conjures the Indonesian passive diatheses di- and ter-.

  • EFL teachers’ reasons for selecting instructional materials during
           the COVID-19 pandemic

    • Authors: Suharyadi Suharyadi, Anik Nunuk Wulyani
      Pages: 49 - 62
Abstract: EFL teachers’ reasons for selecting instructional materials during the COVID-19 pandemicThe COVID-19 pandemic has changed how teachers teach and students learn in the classroom. One of the challenges in the online teaching is that teachers are required to prepare the instructional materials for their students. This study aims at investigating the EFL teachers’ reasons for choosing the instructional materials in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. By employing a set of questionnaires, this study collected the data from 219 English teachers from various levels of education online via the google form link. The data collection was done for one month starting from 5 May to 5 June 2020. The data were analyzed through a content analysis by identifying, grouping, and categorizing similar and different responses. The results of analysis showed that the EFL teachers have five categories of reasons in selecting the instructional materials in the time of pandemic: the instructional materials should be easy, relevant, simple, attractive, and absent from crime, pornography, and viruses. These results suggest that the EFL teachers make use of these reasons in selecting and developing the instructional materials for their students during and after the pandemic. For future textbook developers, these considerations can be used a reference to develop textbooks which accommodate students’ voices and teachers’ voices during the online teaching and learning activities.

    • Authors: Syihabuddin Syihabuddin
      Pages: 63 - 73
Abstract: Bicultural, personality, and pedagogical competences in the perspective of BIPA language assistantsIn 2019, there were 63.022 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language in Victorian schools, Australia. They were facilitated by 263 Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) local teachers. Due to a shortage of BIPA local teachers, the Department of Education and Training Victoria had recruited language assistants from Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the required skillsets of BIPA language assistants to support their duties. The data were collected through interviews, an inventory, observations, and stories of eight Indonesian language assistants with one year of experience. The findings reveal that the language assistants need to develop bicultural, personality and pedagogical competences. These competences should become the reference for developing workshop materials for future BIPA language assistants. Keywords: BIPA teachers, bicultural competences, personality competences,  pedagogical competencesKompetensi bikultural, kepribadian, dan pedagogik dalam perspektif guru bantu BIPAPada tahun 2019 terdapat 63.022 siswa Victoria, Australia, yang mempelajari bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa asing.            Indonesian textbooks for primary school level

    • Authors: Erikson Saragih, Mindo Uli Sinaga, Pesta Simamora, Samsul Mustika
      Pages: 74 - 86
Abstract: Contextualizing extrinsic and intrinsic elements of short stories in Indonesian textbooks for primary school levelThe objective of this study is to look at learning indicators and contextualize extrinsic and intrinsic components in three Indonesian language textbooks for elementary school students. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a content analysis design to attain this purpose. The findings show that textbooks only use one learning indicator for each short story, although intrinsic (themes, characters, and messages) and extrinsic (social values, moral values, cultural values, and religious values) elements have been effectively balanced in the story. short. Although the results of this study do not represent any analysis of short story content in all primary school textbooks, they are highly valuable for students, instructors, and schools when selecting textbooks and short story content to utilize as teaching resources. • The constellation of Lacan’s subject register in Damar Shashangka’s
           translation of Serat Gatholoco

Abstract: The constellation of Lacan’s subject register in Damar Shashangka’s translation of Serat GatholocoGatholoco is a figure in Serat Gatholoco, a literary work suspected to be written in the early 19th century. The Gatholoco character is said to have a constellation of desires that presents subversive symptoms, positioning Serat Gatholoco as a controversial text at that time. The aim of this study is to describe the constellation of desires in Serat Gatholoco translation from Damar Shashangka, using the economics perspective of the Lacanian subject. This study used the qualitative interpretive method. The result shows Gatholoco as a sublimation of ideas that become the image-subject in the symbolic register, which is a manifestation of alienation symptoms suppressed in the discourse of the Ruler. Naming as a true-born man declared by Gatholoco is a form of active narcissistic desire, a metonymy that connects identification and desire for Gatholoco’s self-hood. The identity of the naming is the substitution of one marker with the Other. Its word is a paternal metaphor, the substitution of the Father’s name (resistance efforts) for the Mother’s desire (primordial existence). This metaphor offers substantial resistance to the Father’s Law (puritan existence). In the end, the nicknames of Gatholoco are a form of the narcissistic desire of the author. Keywords: Gatholoco, a constellation of desires, psychoanalysisKonstelasi subjek register Lacanian dalam Serat Gatholoco terjemahan Damar ShashangkaGatholoco ialah tokoh yang terdapat dalam Serat Gatholoco yang diperkirakan ditulis pada awal abad ke-19.

  • Ideology representation in the editorial of Koran Tempo and Kompas on
           COVID-19 handling in Indonesia

Abstract: Ideology representation in the editorial of Koran Tempo and Kompas on COVID-19 handling in IndonesiaThis article examines the editorials in Koran Tempo and Kompas in representing their ideology of COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. This linguistic research is conducted qualitatively. The data were in the form of Indonesian-language editorial discourse, which discussed the COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. The written research data were taken from national newspapers, namely Koran Tempo and Kompas, and were obtained through the use of listening and note-taking techniques. They were then analyzed using Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in the representation of ideology in Koran Tempo and Kompas on COVID-19 handling in Indonesia through their editorials that are systematically constructed in microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure. In the microstructure, ideology is realized through the lexicon, specifically the use of the dominant persona, use of syntactic structures in the form of active-passive sentences, affirmative sentences, and imperative sentences, as well as the use of repetition styles and metaphors. Koran Tempo uses ideological patterns as actions and ideology beliefs in its superstructure. Meanwhile, Kompas uses ideological patterns as systems of thought and systems of action. The difference between the microstructure and the superstructure results in a different macrostructure. Koran Tempo portrays government as the key stakeholder in handling COVID-19 in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Kompas’ editorial was directed at how the handling of COVID-19 was done through communal actions. The Koran Tempo ideology underlines who has a role in handling COVID-19, while the Kompas ideology focuses at what needs to be done in handling COVID-19.Keywords: critical discourse analysis, editorial discourse, ideology, COVID-19Representasi ideologi dalam tajuk Koran Tempo dan Kompas tentang penanganan COVID-19 di IndonesiaArtikel ini mengkaji perihal bagaimana tajuk pada Koran Tempo dan Kompas merepresentasikan ideologinya tentang penanganan COVID-19 di Indonesia.

Abstract: Design paradigm and syntagm of woven bamboo packaging (besek)Abstract: Communication becomes a powerful means of cultural diffusion and an alternative choice for the community. Recently, modern society has been observed to be highly consumeristic, where the image becomes a consideration in the decision-making to purchase. Visual design on the packaging has an effect on consumers' purchasing decisions. The traditional woven bamboo packaging (besek) has an exciting phenomenon in modern society today (urban). The qualitative approach was used with narrative construction or textual descriptions of phenomena. Formal analysis and sign interpretation were used to answer research problems. The formal analytical method was used to identify the way syntagmatic shapes produce paradigms in meaning. The alternative modern packaging that follows the recent developments does not significantly replace the presence of besek as a medium to come to the collective memory of the target audience. Besek is a small part of existing past cultural products that compete with the modern packaging paradigm. Every past cultural product that successfully maintains its existence enables the establishment of an image and becomes a bridge to collective memory in the contemporary era. Keywords: paradigm, essence, memory  colective, design, packagingParadigma dan syntakmatik desain kemasan anyam bambu (besek)Abstrak: Komunikasi menjadi sarana difusi budaya, sekaligus alternatif pilihan bagi masyarakat.
