  • Sérgio Milliet, tradutor de Guilherme de Almeida

    • Authors: Valter Cesar Pinheiro
ABSTRACT: As an important translator of French, Sérgio Milliet (1898-1966) translated into Portuguese works by Pascal, Laclos, Gide, Sartre and Beauvoir, as well as several travelers’ accounts and Montaigne’s Essays. Less renowned are his translations into French published in European periodicals in the 1920s, whose goal was to spread modern Brazilian literature in the Old Continent. Among these translations, four of Guilherme de Almeida’s poems stand out – “Aos pés da cruz” (“Au pied de la croix”), “A cadeia de cristal” (“La chaîne de cristal”), “A dança das horas” (“La danse des heures”) and the sonnet XVI in Nós (“Nous”) – published in the Belgian magazine Lumière in 1921 and 1922. The purpose of this article is to present these translations and, based onthem, understand what Sérgio Milliet’s translation project might have been.

ABSTRACT: This paper highlights the dialogue between Monteiro Lobato and the French literature from different periods. His interest in the French written works was not limited to the 19th century novelists, but it also extended to 17th and 18th century authors such as Madame de Sévigné, Restif de La Bretonne and Marquis de Sade. Lobato’s eclectic taste is also seen in his translations from French. In this tour d’horizon of his comments on French literature, which wereirreverent at times, we unveil a sharp-witted, creative and unprejudiced critic.

  • Ecos de leituras: do esquecido Adherbal de Carvalho, A Noiva

    • Authors: Norma Wimmer
ABSTRACT: Naturalism, as it was practiced in France, aroused the interest of a great number of followers in Brazil. This fact seems to have occurred because, on the one hand, the romantic spirit, associated in Brazil to the monarchic regime itself, seemed to have its sources of inspiration exhausted; on the other hand, the “modern” scientific spirit, associated to the republican thought, was gradually pushing the artistic production in general, and particularly the literary one, in another direction: the rigorous observation of facts, the presentation of the “truth” was essential. Among the Brazilian authors who tried to follow the new trend disseminated by Zola and his experimental novel, many were relegated to oblivion. This is the case, for example, of Adherbal de Carvalho who, besides critical studies, poetry and translations published, in 1888, in São Paulo, The Bride (A Noiva) - sketch of a naturalistic novel - his only prose fiction. Very little is said, nowadays, about this novel and only rare copies of it still survive. The purpose of the work presented here is to recover Carvalho’s text and to locate in it echoes of naturalism as practiced by Zola, as well as to recover reading memories of the works of other authors such as Flaubert and Dumas.

  • Eloy Pontes: crítica e/ou biografia

    • Authors: Gloria Carneiro do Amaral
ABSTRACT: Eloy Pontes, having already published biographies of Brazilian authors of the canon, wrote a book about the author of the Human Comedy, in which he sought to relate the life and the work of the French novelist, so that the latter would serve as an example to national authors. In this essay, we seek to examine Eloy Pontes’ critical perspectives and proposals.

  • Flâneries lapougeanas em Belém do Pará

    • Authors: Laura Taddei Brandini, Byanca Gabriely Silva
ABSTRACT: The object of this article is the role of the city of Belém in Noites tranquilas em Belém (2015), by the French writer Gilles Lapouge. The novel has as plot the attempt by the narrator, a French traveler, to live the life of a citizen of Belém, from the moment a boy mistakes him for his father, who had left for Guyana. The narrator is recognized as Luís Carlos by the other charactersand embraces the opportunity to undertake what he considers a true journey, that is, a deep dive into foreign space and culture. Accumulating “experiences” in the sense of Benjamin (1987), the narrator wanders through the city in the manner of the Baudelairean flâneur, giving the spaces of Belém a major importance in the construction of his identity, split between Brazil and France.

ABSTRACT: Independent publishers, by translating so-called minor literatures into a niche market in which publishers belonging to large groups have no interest, guarantee the preservation of bibliodiversity. This article discusses the position of the publishers Métailié and Anacaona in the French publishing field, and how the dispositions related to the trajectory of their founders are reflected in their stances. The aim is to understand the effects of this on the insertion of Brazilian literature in France. Based on four interviews we conducted with the editors in charge of these two publishing houses - the ones that most translate Brazilian literature in France -, and on the theoretical approach of the sociology of translation (BOURDIEU, 1999 and 2002; CASANOVA, 2002; SAPIRO, 2010).

ABSTRACT: This article intends to approach the path of Rubem Fonseca’s work in France through two kinds of paratexts: the testimony of his first translator, Marguerite Wünscher, granted in 2005, and two articles from specialized literary criticism. The first article, published in April 1979 in Magazine Littéraire is signed by the critic and writer Gérard de Cortanze, and the second, by the translator and critic Alice Raillard, was written for La Quinzaine Littéraire in June 1979. Both are long and detailed as to the contextualization of Fonseca’s work, fulfilling their informative function, as well as that of dissemination to the reading public. Thus, the content of the articles suggests that Rubem Fonseca’s prose in the novel The Morel Case (O caso Morel), and the short story collection Happy New Year (Feliz Ano Novo) – published in French as a single volume under the title Le Cas Morel suivi de Bonne et Heureuse Année (1979) –, would contemplate both enthusiasts of detective novels and those interested in Brazilian/South American sociopolitics of the 1970s, or simply those sympathetic to foreign literatures.

  • Dever de memória: traduzindo Scholastique Mukasonga no Brasil

    • Authors: Raquel Peixoto do Amaral Camargo
ABSTRACT: Based on the intersections between testimonial writing and regimes of truth, this article intends to think about translation commitments and sensibilities in the autobiographical work of Scholastique Mukasonga. To this end, excerpts from the novel Um belo diploma [Un si beau diplôme! / Such a Wonderful Diploma] were analyzed, focusing on the translation of culturalreferents, as well as on the text’s memorialistic constructions. The analyses were preceded by reflections on the duty of memory, initially put in practice as a result of the atrocities committed during the two World Wars, but today amplified to the elaborations of post-genocide mourning. The literary testimonial writing, including the controversies centered on such concept, were alsopart of this initial framework of reflections. The notion of a literary project situated on the border of regimes of enunciation, combining literature and testimonial, with no reduction to either genre, was fundamental to put Mukasonga’s work into perspective. Throughout this study, we sought toglimpse the potential of translation to displace and transfer, and thus add layers of meaning to the translated text, while assessing also its connections with the original text and the respect for its own times, contexts and colors.

Neste artigo, apresentamos algumas passagens desse diálogo.
ABSTRACT: In the extensive correspondence he exchanged with his translators, Guimarães Rosa not only meticulously answered the questions he was asked – which were often of a referential nature due to the great abundance of names of plants, animals and regional expressions present in his books – but also, going far beyond them, he ended up revealing some of the particularities of his poetics. In this article, we present some passages from this dialogue.
