  • Las tres incisiones de Adriana Varejão

    • Authors: Mario Cámara
      Pages: 8 - 32
Abstract: This article examines works by the Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão produced in close dialog to the Brazilian Baroque. The hypothesis of this text is that through the visual work of Varejão it is possible to revisit a series of seminal moments in the cultural history of Brazil traversed by violence and sensuality. Divided into three parts, this text argues that Varejão’s production allows new readings of the encounter between native cultures and the Portuguese early settlers, the sexual violence of slavery, and the creation of a State Baroque stemming from the construction of Brasilia.

  • Heterotopía y colonialidad en los paraísos latinoamericanos:
           Sant’Anna, Cucurto, Bellatin

    • Authors: Leo Cherri
      Pages: 33 - 49
Abstract: This paper aims to analyze a certain reappearance of the humanist topos of the “New World” in contemporary Latin American literature, focusing on the dystopic O paraíso é bem bacana by André Sant’anna (2006) and the utopian El amor es más que una novela de 500 páginas by Washington Cucurto (2006). In these books it is Latin American immigration in Europe, more specifically Berlin, which generates the sort Edenic imagery traditionally spurred by the Americas in humanists. I explore the representation of Utopia beyond a post-colonial framework using Mario Bellatin’s fiction.

  • Conjugando espacios y alianzas para nombrar lo andino en el siglo XXI.
Análisis de dos novelas de Ulises Gutiérrez Llantoy

    • Authors: Adriana Churampi
      Pages: 50 - 71
Abstract: This article aims to redefine the identity traits of an Andean protagonist presented in the narrative of Peruvian author Ulises Gutiérrez Llantoy. In first novel, Ojos de pez abisal, I shall concentrate on the way he modifies the traditional landscape. Andean geography is readjusted as it is presented through the eyes of an andino living in Japan. His second novel, Cementerio de barcos, presents the global experience of the main character, how he engages in the construction of urban alliances as part of peripheral dynamics. Gutiérrez Llantoys’s Andean protagonist emerges as a polyglot inhabitant of shanty towns, a world traveler that loves rock. Following James Holston’s concept of insurgent citizenship, I aim to reveal the contribution of recent Andean narrative to the global debate on identity construction. This exploration of the globalized andino implies taking on the challenge of redescribing traditional Andean components in a radical new setting.

  • Topografías de la desintegración. Sobre Absolut Röntgen, de Abel
           Fernández Larrea

    • Authors: Irina Garbatzky
      Pages: 72 - 87
Abstract: This article reads Absolut Röntgen, the book of stories about Chernobyl by Abel Fernández Larrea, as part of the Cuban literature of the nineties that explore the East and post-communist landscape. As a member of the “Generación Cero”, the work of Abel Fernández Larrea recovers the Soviet archive in order to write a literature no longer identified with the territory of the nation and its literary tradition. In these stories, Fernández Larrea privileges disintegration and estrangement, and systematically avoids both the tendency to write in a documentary or an exoticizing fashion.

  • Escrituras de la sombra: la fotografía como gesto

    • Authors: Paula Bertúa
      Pages: 88 - 106
Abstract: In “La fotografía: copia, archivo, firma”, Jacques Derrida affirms that if the problem of reference and truth in photography were to be carefully considered, photography would cease to be a verification of an external, pre-existing entity, to become a purely performative image-production, which in turn entails the multiple, the divisible, the impure. This performative aspect of photography is indeed closer to gesture than to acting or manufacture. Photography qua materiality paradoxically claims a purely mediatic existence, endlessly mediating, and allowing the gesture itself to become visible, as res gesta, that simultaneously supports and exhibits the different physical and chemical elements, procedures, shapes, sizes and colors that inform photographic matter. This is the framework that allows me to analyze Argentine photographers Eduardo Gil, Martín Weber and Gabriel Valansi whose work explores the threshold between the actuality of the present and its referential impossibility. A series of photographic objects, whose becoming, captures in a single gesture a moment and its loss.

  • Emancipaciones. La ausencia, el gesto y el resto en efimerodramas

    • Authors: Luciana Irene Sastre
      Pages: 107 - 119
Abstract: In “Archeologia dell’opera d’arte” Giorgio Agamben proposes that during Modernity “the artist’s action emancipated itself from its traditional productive or reproductive ends to become pure performance”. It is this frame, that allows and action to enter the art world as a work. A work that calls attention to the intertwining of artist, work and operation, which in turn abolishes all distinction between subjects by virtue of their creative faculties. This paper analyzes two creative processes realized by the Efimerodramas group: Relación I. En Negro. Trayecto Finlandia (2017) and Relación VIII, soportes sustitutos (2018). The paper’s main tenet is that a transformation in the link between objectuality and presence can be observed in the temporal arc between the two relaciones, and this transformation can be studied through the examination of the forms of convergence and divergence that the practices set in motion.

  • Roma, el cine de la nación

    • Authors: José Ramón Ruisánchez Serra
      Pages: 120 - 129
Abstract: This piece explores several of the ways the film Roma by Alfonso Cuarón has been read in order to reframe it differently. Instead of considering the action of the film as something that happens, I suggest that it should be understood as memory. This, in turn, allows me to activate as a film of the nation, following the powerful definition put forward by Kojin Karatani, for whom nation is the amalgamate of the possible affects, exchange modes and forms of sociability abolished in order to establish a State conducive to the progress of Capital. Nation, despite its being essentially a ruin, is what allows citizens’ affects to flow towards State-Capital.

  • Vidas más allá de la abyección: los imaginarios para después del final
           de Rafael Pinedo

    • Authors: Mariana Catalin
      Pages: 130 - 149
Abstract: Despite its relative isolation due to the author's death, Rafael Pinedo’s work has received numerous critical readings. From the first episode of his trilogy, Plop, these approaches rightly highlighted its allegorical character. The cartographies of Plop, Frío and Subte offer numerous clues that point in the direction of this activation. Another movement, however, is invited by the exhibition of current exclusion mechanisms. Other lives and other temporalities, which I explore in this article, disarm the normative modes of definition of the individual and the human.

  • Sade demorado en la esfera de Osvaldo Lamborghini

    • Authors: Cristian Molina
      Pages: 150 - 165
Abstract: In this article, I consider the spatial construction of Osvaldo Lamborghini’s writing as a perforated sphere in which atopological, unclassifiable characters move and generate conflicts regarding belonging and positionality. The characters go in and out of these spheres, producing a dynamic that is characterized by violent sexual jouissance. Through this mobility, a Sadean imaginary is revealed. Said imaginary returns through the temporality of Lamborghini´s writing to delay the beginning of the end of (modern) literature. Nonetheless, Sade also works as a cultural matrix that produces literary fiction in Argentina and, because of its “unspecific complexity”, as an ambivalent ghost regarding aesthetic autonomy. In this sense, the Sadean element becomes in itself unclassifiable and atopological in Lamborghini´s writing, as well as in its eventual developments in Argentine culture.

  • Rayos en la oscuridad. El Fin de Europa (2017) de Rafael Spregelburd

    • Authors: Luz Rodríguez Carranza
      Pages: 166 - 181
Abstract: Roy Batty’s monologue, in Ridley Scott’s (1982) film Blade Runner, talks about the disappearance of memories. It is one manifestation, among many others, of the contemporary discourse of finitude: modern identities and emancipation projects are destined to oblivion. This discourse –a favorite in philosophy, in politics, media and in art– is that of infinite difference, fragmentation and the idea of the open, which replaces form with dissolution. It also coincides with the second law of thermodynamics, entropy. Now, the Argentine Rafael Spregelburd prefers the second law of the theory of chaos (or of set theory), which relieves iterations or intermittences, places of creation within the random fluctuation. In El Fin de Europa (2017), a series of 8 short works in more than 12 languages, simultaneous spaces are opened, possibilities of memory to be treasured by anyone. They are places, like the ones that Roy Batty lists, that remain in all their brightness and intensity, “flashing in a moment of danger” (Walter Benjamin), where subjects confront their own truth. If the end is inevitable, what counts is what is worth before it comes: life.
