  • La utopía indígena: resistencia en tiempos de pandemia

    • Authors: Elena Ansótegui
      Pages: 8 - 24
Abstract: This article aims to examine how the emergence of COVID-19 is affecting the indigenous communities of Mexico, focusing especially on the area organized around the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), in the southeast of the country. In order to examine this, I will show the different ways the indigenous communities have affronted the health crisis. Issues like Environment, Human Rights and the construction of mega extractive projects emphasize the extreme vulnerability of these communities. The objective of this article is to demonstrate that indigenous resistance is currently a necessary and urgent utopia that makes us believe that alternative ways of organizing are possible.

  • Utopía Griega y utopía de América

    • Authors: Isabel González Arenas
      Pages: 25 - 39
Abstract: This article, through a re-reading of the literary discourse which is supposed to shape the utopian genre (myths, Greek historiography, treatises, Renaissance dialogues, travel writings, Indian chronicles, etc.), aims to present a study of the consciousness and the cultural construction of America, by pointing out the interconnections between History, Philosophy, Anthropology, Linguistics and Literature in the concept-invention of the New World. It shows, by giving concrete examples, how the previously known conceptual schemes were employed to describe the reality of the new world during the Age of Discovery. The resulting image of America to the West is characterized by marks of estrangement and otherness, which are central features of utopia. The final part of the article which pertains to the 20th century, starting from the models proposed by Martì, Rodò, Ureña and Retamar, analyses the construction of the new image of America, the way we see it nowadays – where the concepts of transculturation, cultural hybridization or post colonialism play an important role – and how the American identity is gradually shaped.

  • La utopía y su música – la Nueva Trova y la
           Revolución cubana

    • Authors: Jan Gustafsson
      Pages: 40 - 54
Abstract: The overall theme of this article is the relation between the Cuban Revolution and the musical genre known as the Nueva Trova. Based on the underlying hypothesis that the Cuban revolutionary process has an important utopian dimension, this contribution studies the role of the Nueva Trova in this process, especially in the 1970s and 80s. After a short general discussion of some aspects of this role, the lyrics of some twenty songs are analyzed in order to find different manifestations of revolutionary themes. The analysis is organized according to five suggested modalities: The militant utopia, utopia and intimacy, the complex utopia and utopia questioned. A fifth modality are songs without ideological content. Characteristic of the lyrics studied are their poetic quality, thematic variations, and complexity.

  • Buen Vivir, meta-utopía y estado

    • Authors: Chandra Schilling Cueto
      Pages: 55 - 70
Abstract: Traditional utopianism has been dedicated to carrying out the imagination of a perfect single idyllic community for all, failing repeatedly in the aim because of difference. Though, what would happen, if difference went from being an obstacle of the project to utopia, to being defended and valued by it, as its base of origin and success' Nozick (1974) with his concept of meta-utopia as a framework for utopia, thus breaks with the universality that each of the particular utopias intends and demands for itself. The concept of Buen Vivir (“Good Living”) legitimizes, makes visible and claims difference as intrinsic to every process of knowledge production and every political process. The minimal State is presented as the political structure equivalent to meta-utopia, though the Buen Vivir is implemented as a framework for the plurinational State. This leads to the questioning of the relationship between meta-utopia and the State in this article.

  • A mão invisível de Deus: sobre a aliança entre liberais e conservadores
           na nova direita brasileira

    • Authors: Georg Wink
      Pages: 71 - 87
Abstract: In this study, I examine how a common basis of ideas contributes to the consolidation of an alliance between market liberals and conservatives in the current political conjuncture in Brazil, which brought about the rise to power of a new right in 2018. The argument is that, since introduced to Brazil, liberal thinking articulates efficiently with conservativism in order to preserve the social status quo, taking action whenever social reforms seem possible, by indoctrinating decision and opinion makers through an amplified think tank network. The analysis demonstrates the existence of a proximity in ideas nourished discretely by a liberal dimension in conservative thinking (the rediscovered liberal tradition of medieval scholastics) and a religious dimension in liberal thinking, in Brazil inspired mainly by the Austrian School of Economics. This allows the promotion of a new and persuasive liberal-conservative utopianism, which veils both its utopian and eschatological character.

  • TRANSDISCIPLINARITY AS A DECOLONIZING RESEARCH PRACTICE

    • Authors: Danilo R Streck
      Pages: 88 - 100
Abstract: The paper intends to contribute to an international understanding of transdiciplinarity (TD) from the perspective of Latin America. The basic argument is that TD is a research practice that can foster knowledge democracy within the framework of decoloniality as a social and academic praxis. The first part of the paper highlights some historical and contemporary practices that are important to shape a decolonizing approach to transdisciplinarity. The second section discusses issues involved in the development of transdisciplinary political, contextual and institutional conditions, besides the researcher’s personal and professional commitment and preparedness.

  • A educação eugenista latino-americana

    • Authors: Guilherme Prado Roitberg
      Pages: 101 - 116
Abstract: The science of racial improvement or eugenics was created in the late 19th century by Francis Galton. Based on social Darwinism, this science became popular among the influential Latin American intellectual elite, leading to the creation of organizations committed to the racial improvement of the population through sanitary medicine and combating the “degenerative threats” represented by black, mestizos, foreigners and handicapped people. Supported by historical perspective, the article investigate the utopian-racial project of the eugenic movement in Latin America during the years 1920 to 1930. Through a documentary research of publications by Brazilian and Argentine eugenicists, the article seeks to understand the vicissitudes of the intellectual field that allowed the development of Latin American scientific racism through the institutionalization of eugenic education. In dialogue with the specialized bibliography, it is demonstrated how these documents are fundamental sources in understanding of Brazil-Argentina connection envisioned by the eugenic movement, as well as the permanency of this intellectual support network during the 20th century.
