  Abstract: On Modernity and the Holocaust – inspirations and critique after three decadesThe article discusses the main theses of Zygmunt Bauman’s book Modernity and the Holocaust, the contexts of its writing and its early critical reception in the 1990s. As an introduction to the issue’s theme, it focuses on the proposals for a contemporary interpretation of Bauman’s work put forward by the authors of the articles published in this issue of Studia Litteraria et Historica. In the final section, the author proposes a reading of Modernity and the Holocaust in relation to educational issues raised in the 1960s by Theodor W. Adorno.

Dwie szkoły myślenia o Holokauście: Snyder kontra Bauman

  Abstract: Two Schools of Thought on the Holocaust: Snyder v BaumanThe article describes two approaches to the Holocaust, identified with the names of Zygmunt Bauman and Timothy Snyder. In this dyad, Bauman stands for the culturalist, sociological approach focused on identifying the social conditions in which otherness is produced and tracing the significance of modernity and bureaucracy for the Shoah. In contrast, Snyder dismisses the notion that anti-Semitism and modern statehood played a crucial part in the Holocaust. The study also identifies contemporary adherents of the two interpretations in Poland. Dwie szkoły myślenia o Holokauście: Snyder kontra BaumanTekst opisuje dwa sposoby interpretacji Zagłady, które sygnowane są nazwiskami Zygmunta Baumana i Timothy’ego Snydera. Bauman symbolizuje podejście kulturalistyczne i społeczne, poszukujące społecznych warunków produkcji inności, nowoczesnych i biurokratycznych rysów Szoah. Snyder przeciwnie, oddala argument antysemityzmu i nowoczesnego państwa jako ważnych czynników Zagłady. Autorka wskazuje na współczesne kontynuacje obu linii interpretacyjnych w Polsce.

badań nad Holokaustem na ziemiach polskich

  Abstract: Zygmunt Bauman’s Modernity and the Holocaust and the Unexplored Research Perspectives in Studies about the Holocaust in Polish LandsBy reading Zygmunt Bauman’s famous study critically, this text attempts to show how both the brilliant analyses, observations, and intuitions contained in Modernity and the Holocaust and its errors and distortions can still serve as important guideposts for further studies of the Holocaust in Polish lands and in Central and Eastern Europe even today, some thirty years after publication. What remains absent from our understanding of the Holocaust in this region is a broader and deepened historical perspective, taking into account the preceding decades as well as the challenges of peripheral modernity in this part of Europe and its impact on relations between Christians and Jews both before and during the Holocaust. The Unannihilable – Zygmunt Bauman as Analyst and Ambassador of
Ambivalence

  Abstract: The Unannihilable – Zygmunt Bauman as Analyst and Ambassador of AmbivalenceIn Zygmunt Bauman’s work, ambivalence was a topic that recurred explicitly several times in his analyses of modernity and later liquid modernity. This was particularly evident in his book Modernity and Ambivalence (1991). But ambivalence also appears as an underlying theme in later books on life in liquid-modern society. Moreover, Bauman’s sociological perspective itself oozes ambivalence, and many of the topics he explored and embraced throughout his career – such as freedom, morality, immortality and utopia – are themselves fundamental expressions of ambivalence. In addition, Bauman always insisted that the world is not fixed once and for all, but that humans can challenge and change it, and in this way ambivalence is not an ailment to be cured but rather a fact to be accepted. This article explores the theme and leitmotif of ambivalence in the writings of Bauman. The article seeks to provide a concise presentation and discussion of Bauman’s continuous engagement with ambivalence in order to show that sociology perhaps ought to take the topic of ambivalence more seriously than is currently the case. Wprawdzie szczególnie poczesne miejsce zajmuje ona w jego książce Modernity and Ambivalence z roku 1991 (wyd. pol. Wieloznaczność nowoczesna. Nowoczesność wieloznaczna, 1995), lecz wątek ambiwalencji przewija się także w późniejszych książkach Baumana poświęconych życiu w społeczeństwie płynnej nowoczesności. Co więcej, socjologiczna perspektywa przyjęta przez Baumana jako taka przepojona jest ambiwalencją, a wiele zagadnień, którymi pasjonował się i które zgłębiał w całej swojej twórczości – na przykład, wolność, moralność, nieśmiertelność lub utopia – same w sobie ucieleśniają ambiwalencję. Bauman zawsze podkreślał, że kształt świata nie jest niezmienny czy ustanowiony raz na zawsze, a ludzie mogą podważać go i przeobrażać. Ambiwalencja zatem jest nie tyle bolączką, którą należałoby leczyć, ile raczej faktem, który trzeba zaakceptować. Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest tematyce ambiwalencji jako lejtmotywowi pism Baumana. Autor pokrótce kreśli i omawia ciągłą refleksję Baumana nad ambiwalencją, aby wskazać, że zagadnieniem tym socjologia być może powinna zająć się z większą uwagą niż dotychczas.

Płynna nowoczesność i Holokaust

  Abstract: Liquid Modernity and the HolocaustIn Modernity and the Holocaust, Zygmunt Bauman argued that the Holocaust had been by no means a negation of the civilising process, but was, on the contrary, its consequence. He claimed that the constitutive features of solid modernity, such as bureaucratic culture, the rise of instrumental rationality and the domination of blueprint utopia, were reflected in the genesis and course of the Holocaust. Bauman’s main aim in writing the book was to make fundamental changes in the problematization of modernity in the social sciences, and to highlight the need to develop norms, values and attitudes that were in opposition to modernity. An overview of these facts provides a starting point for my analysis of Bauman’s later analyses of the Holocaust. By focusing on two issues that he emphasised in the context of the genesis of the Holocaust, namely the mechanism of adiaphorization and the process of the social construction of “otherness”, I show how these phenomena materialize in liquid modernity. I identify their connections with a range of features of the liquid modern condition, including the development of individualism and consumer culture, the sense of insecurity and the “nostalgic turn”. I emphasise that, according to Bauman, both moral indifference and xenophobia are increasingly significant phenomena in contemporary society, which may entail pernicious – and currently barely foreseeable – consequences. I argue that the way Bauman wrote about both solid and liquid modernity was characterised by a dystopian poetics, which was a foundation for his utopian thought.
  Płynna nowoczesność i HolokaustW Nowoczesności i Zagładzie Zygmunt Bauman dowodził, że Holokaust nie był bynajmniej zaprzeczeniem procesu cywilizacyjnego, ale – wręcz przeciwnie – jego konsekwencją. Przekonywał, że cechy konstytutywne stałej fazy nowoczesności, takie jak kultura biurokratyczna, wzrost znaczenia racjonalności instrumentalnej czy też dominacja myślenia utopijnego o projektanckim wymiarze, znalazły swoje odzwierciedlenie w genezie i przebiegu Zagłady. Jego nadrzędnym celem przy pisaniu tego dzieła było dokonanie zasadniczych zmian w problematyzowaniu nowoczesności w naukach społecznych, a także wskazanie na konieczność rozwijania norm, wartości i postaw, które byłyby wobec niej opozycyjne. Przywołanie tych faktów jest dla mnie punktem wyjścia do analizy późniejszych rozpoznań Baumana poświęconych Holokaustowi. Koncentrując się na dwóch kwestiach, które podkreślał on w kontekście genezy Zagłady, to jest mechanizmie adiaforyzacji oraz procesie społecznego konstruowania „obcości”, unaoczniam to, jak zjawiska te materializują się w płynnej nowoczesności. Wskazuję na ich związki z takimi cechami tej kondycji, jak: rozwój indywidualizmu i kultury konsumpcyjnej, poczucie niepewności, a także „zwrot nostalgiczny”. Podkreślam, że zdaniem Baumana zarówno moralna obojętność, jak i ksenofobia są coraz istotniejszymi fenomenami we współczesnym społeczeństwie, co może wiązać się z bardzo groźnymi – na dziś trudnymi do przewidzenia – konsekwencjami. W artykule dowodzę, że sposób, w jaki pisał on zarówno o stałej, jak i płynnej fazie nowoczesności, charakteryzował się poetyką dystopijną, która stanowiła wstęp do jego myślenia o utopijnym charakterze

Barbarism – The Active Dystopia

  Abstract: Barbarism – The Active DystopiaIn this article, I argue that dystopia also has an ambivalently “active” function in Bauman’s sociology. Across his work, as a counter-image to the “active utopia” of socialism, the traces of the “active dystopia” can be tracked, defined as a pointed elucidation of the possibilities for barbarism latent within the present, the clearest expression of which is presented in Modernity and the Holocaust (1989). The article proceeds roughly in three steps. Firstly, I revisit the arguments in Bauman’s foundational cultural and critical sociology that developed alongside his revisionist reading of Marxism in the 1960s and 1970s, on epistemologies of the future, common sense and the limitations of the predictive ambitions of social science. Then, I develop a particular focus on an unpublished, though essential, typescript entitled “Is the Science of the Possible Possible'”, suggesting that it is usefully read in terms of the emphasis on possibility and potentiality in Modernity and the Holocaust. Throughout these sections, I intersperse a reading of Modernity and the Holocaust in the light of this foundational work, presenting it as an exemplary form of critical sociology as active dystopia, which elucidates the possibility for barbarism residing within modern societies. Finally, I consider how his thinking situates him in a lineage of critical thought animated by the “active dystopia”, arguing that what is often mistaken for gloominess and pessimism is, in fact, a crucial resource for sociology in its speculative imagination of possible futures. Barbarzyństwo – dystopia w działaniuW niniejszym artykule ukazuję, że w socjologii Zygmunta Baumana dystopii przypisana jest również ambiwalentnie „aktywna” funkcja. W pismach Baumana ślady „dystopii w działaniu” pojawiają się jako przeciwobraz „utopii w działaniu” socjalizmu, służący „naświetleniu tkwiących w teraźniejszości możliwości barbarzyństwa”, czemu najbardziej dobitny wyraz daje Nowoczesność i Zagłada (2009; wyd. oryginalne Modernity and the Holocaust, 1989). Mój wywód przebiega w trzech etapach. Najpierw sięgam do dociekań Baumana na temat epistemologii przyszłości, zdrowego rozsądku i ograniczeń predyktywnych aspiracji nauk społecznych ujętych w jego wczesnej socjologii kulturowej i krytycznej, którą uprawiał równolegle z rewizjonistycznym odczytaniem marksizmu w latach sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. W następnym kroku koncentruję się zwłaszcza na nieopublikowanym, acz istotnym, maszynopisie zatytułowanym Is the Science of the Possible Possible' [Czy możliwa jest nauka o tym, co możliwe], wskazując przy tym, że rzuca on interesujące światło na kategorie możliwości i potencjalności eksponowane przez Baumana w Nowoczesności i Zagładzie. W tych częściach odczytuję Nowoczesność i Zagładę przez pryzmat wyżej wspomnianej, kluczowej w moim mniemaniu pozycji, przedstawiając ją jako wzorcowy przykład socjologii krytycznej w postaci „dystopii w działaniu”, która naświetla możliwości barbarzyństwa kryjące się w nowoczesnych społeczeństwach. W części końcowej rozpatruję, jak rozważania Baumana sytuują go w tradycji myśli krytycznej, której siłą napędową jest „dystopia w działaniu”, i dowodzę, że to, co często błędnie brane jest za posępność i pesymizm, jest w rzeczy samej kluczowym zasobem socjologii w jej spekulatywnych wizjach możliwych przyszłości.

The Dogs Bark, the Carnival Moves On... Revisiting Zygmunt Bauman,
Modernity and the Holocaust

  Abstract: The Dogs Bark, the Carnival Moves On... Revisiting Zygmunt Bauman, Modernity and the HolocaustModernity and the Holocaust is now thirty years old. How should we respond to the book, its controversy, and its history or context' In this essay I offer three steps as a way into this labyrinth. First, I review the core claims of Bauman’s book (1989). Second, I use my four-volume edited collection of essays on his work (2002) as a decade check on its reception. Third, the new volume, Revisiting Modernity and the Holocaust: Heritage, Dilemmas, Extensions (2022) is brought into play as a third optic or time slice. I conclude that the book is a classic, which means we should still read it and use it as a marker, but also that the debate has out of necessity moved on. As Bauman used to say, “The dogs bark, the carnival moves on”. Psy szczekają, karnawał trwa dalej… O Zygmuncie Baumanie, nowoczesności i Zagładzie po latachNowoczesność i Zagłada (wyd. oryg. Modernity and the Holocaust) ma już trzydzieści lat. Jak należy podchodzić dziś do tej książki, kontrowersji wokół niej, jej historii i jej kontekstu' W niniejszym artykule proponuję trzy kroki, które przeprowadzą nas przez ten labirynt. W kroku pierwszym, przypominam główne twierdzenia, które Zygmunt Bauman stawia w swojej książce z roku 1989. W drugim odnoszę się do opublikowanego w roku 2002 czterotomowego zbioru esejów na jej temat pod moją redakcją, który przedstawia recepcję tej pracy w ciągu dziesięciu lat od jej wydania. W trzecim kroku zaś nawiązuję do nowego tomu zatytułowanego Revisiting Modernity and the Holocaust [Nowoczesność i Zagłada po latach], który ukazał się w roku 2022 i służy za trzeci pryzmat oglądu obejmujący kolejny przedział czasowy. W podsumowaniu stwierdzam, że książka Baumana stała się pozycją klasyczną, co oznacza, że nadal stanowi nieodzowną lekturę i punkt odniesienia, ale w międzyczasie debata posunęła się już dalej i zaczęła toczyć się nowymi torami. Jak mawiał Bauman: „Psy szczekają, a karnawał toczy się dalej”.

Surrealizm, socrealizm, dialog'

  Abstract: Surrealism, Socialist Realism, Dialogue'The text offers a critical and comprehensive review of Dorota Jarecka’s book Surrealizm, realizm, marksizm. Sztuka i lewica komunistyczna w Polsce w latach 1944–1948 [Surrealism, Realism, Marxism: Art and the Communist Left in Poland between 1944 and 1948]. The reviewer appreciates the main methodological premise of the book, namely that the tensions and conflicts generated within the triangle “avant-garde – realism – emancipatory role of art” cannot be reduced to a binary opposition between totalitarian ideology and the legitimate art world. In fact, it reflects the contradictory dynamics of politically engaged art in general and the
  context of post-war Poland in particular. Despite the book’s formidable factual support, the result of extensive and comprehensive query, the reviewer still regrets that the author remains primarily an art historian rather than social historian of art. This note of regret however does not diminish this noble contribution to understanding the logics of Polish visual arts in the aftermath of World War II. This area is much less known generally than the literature of this very period.
  Surrealizm, socrealizm, dialog'Tekst stanowi krytyczną i wyczerpującą recenzję książki Doroty Jareckiej Surrealizm, realizm, marksizm. Sztuka i lewica komunistyczna w Polsce w latach 1944–1948. Recenzent docenia główne założenie metodologiczne pracy, a mianowicie to, że napięcia i konflikty powstałe w ramach triady „awangarda – realizm – emancypacyjna rola sztuki” nie mogą być sprowadzone do binarnej opozycji między ideologią totalitarną a prawomocnym światem sztuki. W rzeczywistości odzwierciedla ono sprzeczną dynamikę sztuki zaangażowanej politycznie, w szczególności w kontekście powojennej Polski. Pomimo imponującego zaplecza merytorycznego książki, będącego wynikiem obszernej i wyczerpującej kwerendy, recenzent żałuje, że autorka pozostała przede wszystkim historykiem sztuki, a nie stała się społecznym historykiem sztuki. Żal ten nie umniejsza jednak uznania dla jej cennego wkładu w zrozumienie logiki polskich sztuk wizualnych po drugiej wojnie światowej. Obszar ten jest ogólnie znacznie słabiej znany niż literatura z tego samego okresu.
