  • Necrology for Professor Fiona Tolhurst (1968–2021)

Abstract: Fiona Tolhurst, bottom right; Evelyn Meyer, back to the camera; Molly Martin and Richard Sévère, top right; Barney Haney, top left; Joseph M. Sullivan, middle left; K.S. Whetter, bottom left: at the IAS conference at Würzburg University, 2017.Photo courtesy of David F. Johnson.Dr. Fiona Tolhurst died unexpectedly on 21 December 2021; she was 53. The death of a good friend or respected teacher or fine scholar is always hard, and Fiona was all of these things—and was these things to an extraordinarily wide range of people. But Fiona's death has hit many of us especially hard for coming when it did: in the midst of an ongoing global pandemic that complicates or negates conference travel, many Arthurians have been ... • Chrétien and the Seven Dwarfs: The Portrayal of Dwarf Characters in the
           Earliest Arthurian Romances

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Among the many complaints which one character in Don Quixote (1605) lodges against chivalric romances is that they contain 'tantos enanos graciosos' [so many droll dwarfs].1 Certainly dwarfs are a common feature of the romance genre, to the point that one scholar has argued that a stray reference to a dwarf in Ben Jonson's Volpone (1606) acts as a shorthand for a whole nexus of romance tropes.2 Dwarfs are especially common in Arthurian works, beginning in fact with the earliest examples thereof, as several dwarfs make appearances in the very first Arthurian romance, Chrétien de Troyes' Erec and Enide (c.1170). Of course, entities far more unusual than little people are also regularly presented as if not strange at ... Read More

  • Anything You Can Do: Gawain, Lancelot, and Failure in Malory's Le Morte
           Darthur

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Within Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur, the character of Gawain has been an enigma for both casual readers and veteran Arthurian scholars alike; he is given a place of honor at Arthur's side and yet is often considered treacherous by other knights. While this apparent contradiction was dismissed by some early scholars as a result of Malory's inability to reconcile his sources, I argue that the inconsistency is in fact a consistent and deliberate element of Malory's narrative.1 By making use of all of his sources, and of the varied presentations of Gawain, Malory uses Gawain to demonstrate the fact that it is almost impossible for knights to succeed and triumph over every challenge presented to them. As such ... Read More

  • Rewriting a Demon: Merlin's Changing Characterization in Three Versions of
           Of Arthour and of Merlin

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the course of his lengthy tenure in literature and popular culture, Merlin's characterization has varied significantly. He has moved from a wise prophet in Geoffrey of Monmouth's medieval chronicle, to a beguiled lover in Lord Tennyson's Victorian rendition, to a loveable youngster in the BBC's recent television show. Merlin's characterization shifts across literary history as different authors adapt his character to suit the needs of their texts and the preoccupations of their periods. In medieval literature, this is true even within the same work. The image of Merlin presented in three different versions of the Middle English romance Of Arthour and of Merlin changes according to the historical moment of each ... Read More

  • The King, the Giant, and Time: Temporality in the Encounter at Mont Saint
Michel in the Alliterative Morte Arthure

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: 'The courtly romance is not reality shaped and set forth by art, but an escape into fable and fairytale.'1 So claims Erich Auerbach. In 'A Knight Sets Forth,' Auerbach argues that the genre of romance is essentially antimimetic. Time in these texts is meaningless; speaking of the passing of seven years in Chrétien de Troyes' Yvain, Auerbach claims that time had 'passed, without leaving a trace, just as time usually does in a fairytale.'2 To depict the realism of the medieval world in a romance would, according to Auerbach, be no romance at all. Now, far be it from me to argue that works of medieval romance function as realistic fiction. I'm not suggesting that romance attempts to be 'faithful' to a 'realistic' idea ... Read More

  • Female Desire in Chaucer's Legend of Good Women and Middle English Romance
           by Lucy M. Allen-Goss (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: With this study's focus on feminine desire, Lucy M. Allen-Goss asks what I believe will be the most crucial question in premodern literary studies: what will emerge if we change the standpoint from which we begin our scholarly enquiries into gender, sexuality, and other literary representations of embodiment' Allen-Goss focuses welcome attention on Chaucer's Legend of Good Women as a hermeneutic locus where the absences that might create a 'lesbian-like erotic' potentially emerge. Allen-Goss pairs this consideration with analysis of Middle English romance, or 'a mode of writing about female desire and bodily agency that is innovative and contemporary rather than isolated and retrograde' (pp. 28–29). In thinking ... Read More

  • Medieval Literature and Social Politics: Studies of Cultures and Their
           Contexts by Stephen Knight (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Fans of prolific scholar and teacher Stephen T. Knight will be pleased to see this new volume of seventeen articles, some of which were previously published in hard-to-find periodicals and collections and others, including conference papers, printed here for the first time. The volume is organized in three parts: Part One: 'Early classic texts and their contexts' (Chapters One–Five); Part Two: 'Mythic and popular materials and their contexts' (Chapters Six–Eleven); and Part Three: 'Modern approaches to medieval materials' (Chapters Twelve–Seventeen). A bibliography of Knight's publications and a detailed index complete the volume. The range of Knight's interests is impressive, from early Welsh Arthurian literature ... Read More

  • French Romance, Medieval Sweden and the Europeanisation of Culture by
           Sophia Lodén (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this groundbreaking study of the reception of French literature in Sweden, Sofia Lodén convincingly shows how extensively Sweden and Europe's north were integrated into the larger medieval European intellectual and courtly currents radiating out of France from the beginning of the twelfth century. As Lodén demonstrates, the skillful translation into Swedish of narratives originating in French contributed in fundamental ways to the civilizing process and the Europeanization of Sweden from the beginning of the Late Middle Ages through the beginning of the sixteenth century. As her central case studies, the author analyzes four Swedish translations of courtly narratives alongside their ultimately French-language ... • Dating Beowulf: Studies in Intimacy ed.by Daniel C. Remein and Erica
           Weaver (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Several years ago I attended a dinner with a group of medievalists. Stuck at a corner of the table, a colleague and I were pressed by another conference attendee on our beliefs about the dating of the poem Beowulf. After at least an hour of polite deflections and engagements on the topic, my fellow interrogatee finally broke, asking why we shouldn't be able to study something, anything else about the poem than its date of composition. (The conversation ended shortly after this when a cat mysteriously appeared in the restaurant, giving us a chance to escape.)Much like the cat, the essays in Daniel C. Remein and Erica Weaver's Dating Beowulf offer us a way out of the corner into which our field has backed itself. ... Read More

  • Meter and Modernity in English Verse, 1350–1650 by Eric Weiskott
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Scholarly books on metrics rarely see the trees in the forest, let alone the forest. In Meter and Modernity in English Verse, Eric Weiskott offers a stunning example of metrical inquiry at its finest in a study of a neglected genre that, from its modest corner of the literary world, poses daring and difficult questions about how we organize knowledge in a 'virtual field of play both constraining and responsive to the continuous history of cultural decision-making' (p. 10). In the process, Weiskott presents an alternative history of literature free from the warping effects of periodization. Gracefully blending Bourdieuan theory with linguistic and archival evidence, Weiskott recenters a marginalized genre—the ... Read More
