  • Indigenous Young Adult Novels: An Introduction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This special issue participates in a watershed moment in the history of Indigenous Young Adult (YA) literature. In 2021, the American Library Association (ALA) for the first time awarded the Caldecott Medal for "the most distinguished American picture book for children" to an Indigenous artist, Michaela Goade (Tlingit), who illustrated We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom (Turtle Mountain). The following year, the ALA for the first time presented a Newbery Medal Honor Award for "distinguished contribution to American literature for children" to an Indigenous writer, Darcie Little Badger (Lipan Apache), for her novel A Snake Falls to Earth. The ALA also included several Indigenous works in its "2022 Notable ... Read More

  • "Real old-timey": Storytelling and the Language of Resurgence in Cherie
           Dimaline's The Marrow Thieves

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Dr. Anah-Jayne Samuelson lives on Treaty 7 and Treaty 4 territory, the traditional lands of the Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Piikani (Peigan), Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina (Sarcee) as well as the Néhiyaw (Cree), Sioux, and the Saulteaux nations of the Ojibwa Peoples. Vanessa Evans lives on Treaty 13 territory, the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat Peoples. As white settler scholars teaching and researching at Canadian institutions on these territories, we are implicated in the ongoing networks of colonial power we critique in this paper. We recognize that as outsiders to the communities and contexts discussed here our understanding and ... Read More

  • "I think I beleive in civil rights": Re-remembering Trans-Indigenous
Political Activism in Pauline Vaeluaga Smith's Dawn Raid

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Sofia Savea, the thirteen-year-old Sāmoan-Pākehā1 protagonist of Pauline Vaeluaga Smith's Dawn Raid (2018), muses on what she "beleives" (sic) as she writes down notes for a speech, modeled after Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream." She concludes that "I think I beleive in civil rights" (18). This statement, early in Vaeluaga Smith's young adult novel, sets the scene for how Sofia negotiates what civil rights mean for her and her family in 1976 Aotearoa New Zealand as they encounter anti-Pasifika discrimination, meet with the social resistance leaders of the Polynesian Panthers, and experience a dawn raid.On the 1st of August, 2021, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern formally apologized on behalf of ... Abstract: To ignore sex and embodied pleasure in the cause of Indigenous liberation is to ignore one of our greatest resources. It is to deny us one of our most precious gifts.Every orgasm can be an act of decolonization. Many Indigenous authors, including Chrystos (Menominee), Joy Harjo (Muscogee), Beth Brant (Bay of Quinte Mohawk), Daniel Heath Justice (Cherokee), Deborah Miranda (Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation/Chumash), Qwo-Li Driskill (Cherokee), and Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm (Anishinaabek, Chippewas of Nawash First Nation), have written about the life-affirming power of Indigenous erotics. Drawing on Audre Lorde's revolutionary work, these authors describe the erotic as a site of power, pleasure, beauty, and creativity; ... Read More

  • "If I ever get out of here (if we ever get out of here)": Modelling "The
Good Mind" In Eric Gansworth's If I Ever Get Out of Here

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: To write his 2013 YA novel, If I Ever Get Out of Here, Eric Gansworth (Onondaga Nation, Eel Clan) drew on many of his own life experiences, including growing up on the Tuscarora reservation of western New York, attending a predominantly white school, and grappling with the effects of military service on family members. The novel follows twelve-year-old Lewis Blake as he develops his personal and cultural identities in relation to his white classmates and the folks at home on the Tuscarora1 reservation. As he does so, he must often rely on the well-intentioned guidance of his white friend George Haddonfield, the new kid at school who lives in Red Tail Manor with the other military families. However, George's advice ... Read More
