  • William Carlos Williams’s The Dog and the Fever: Baroque Proto-Modernism
           as American Modernist Innovation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In spite of my middle name I am not Spanish but more French and English than anything else. Yet, in another way I am very Spanish, due to childhood influences. I love the language and feel strongly for the Spanish tradition which is tremendously significant—and much neglected here. I think also that Spanish literature is a mine where we here in America might profitably dig for gold, the real gold of the world. The translation work of William Carlos Williams (1883–1963) forms a significant part of his canon but has not yet received the attention it deserves among scholars. This particular situation is consistent with the second-class status long held by literary translation until its recent elevation due, in part ... Read More

  • Williams’s Profundity: Pragmatic Naturalism and Distributed Poetic
           Thinking

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “Pro captu lectoris habent sua fata libelli”“There is no art of poetry save by grace of other poetry.”William Carlos Williams tirelessly worked to explain and exemplify the constitutive role poetry and the arts play in making us the distinctive kinds of agents that we are. Throughout his career, he consistently emphasized that the imaginative modes of practical reasoning at work in the creation and reception of works of art are the enabling conditions for our most sophisticated discourses and social practices ranging from ethics to the physical sciences. He argued, from this position, that “[a]rt is the pure effect of the force upon which science depends for its reality” and that poetry is “at the base of ... Read More

  • William Carlos Williams and the Traditions of Georgic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: These old books suggested a certain fertility, an Ohio soil as if they were making a humus for new literature to spring in. I heard the bellowing of the bullfrogs and the hum of mosquitoes reverberating through the thick embossed covers when I had closed the book. Decayed literature makes the richest of all soils. We live out of manure heaps. When Pound and Eliot went to Europe to pursue their cosmopolitan modernism, the story goes that William Carlos Williams stayed home. His distinctive poems, based in local scenes and language from “‘the mouths of Polish mothers’” repudiate Eliot’s allusive, self-consciously literary verse (A 311) . Critics construe Williams as a “pure product of America” (I 131), his poems ... Read More

  • Ekphrastic Copresence: “The Hunters in the Snow” as a Style of
           Poetic Access

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This essay begins with a desire: to get more out of J. Hillis Miller’s influential formulation, in Poets of Reality (1965), that in a Williams poem—or, more likely, in the most characteristic Williams poems—things only ever exist in “a region of copresence in which anywhere is everywhere, and all times are one time” (288).1 To Williams scholars that might sound like squeezing a spent orange for one more drop of juice. But even so, I ask for more because, firstly it is a formidable definition of a kind of late-modernist poetic making usually defined in terms of openness or closure, as in a field of composition; but, secondly, “copresence,” which Miller thinks in terms of causality’s dissolution is a shifty concept ... • Two American Poets—Wallace Stevens & William Carlos Williams: From
the Collection of Alan M. Klein (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This exhibition of Alan Klein’s remarkable collection of Stevens and Williams material, gathered over more than 20 years, was held at New York’s Grolier Club from January 16 to February 23, 2019. A visitor entering the exhibition on the Club’s second floor encountered books, letters, magazines, and photographs covering much of the two poets’ careers, showing the frequent intersection of their publishing activities and, less frequently, of their personal lives. The earliest Stevens material is a note from the poet’s days as Secretary to Harvard’s Signet Society, and a copy of Harvard Lyrics and Other Verses (1899) containing “Stevens’s first appearance in a book” with his poem ‘Vita Mea’ (42). The latest— apart from ... Read More

  • Open Form in American Poetry: Essays by Burton Hatlen (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: I’m sure many of my generation of scholars remember Burt Hatlen’s large, homely, smiling presence as he arrived, somewhat disheveled, at a podium in some hotel ballroom B, with a brilliant talk composed on the plane and written out in long-hand on a yellow legal pad. Burt was the man I was always most glad to see, listen to, and learn from at any conference; one who had forgotten more about modern poetry than I ever knew. Always busy as an editor of Sagetrieb, which he founded, and Paideuma, which he inherited from Carroll Terrell, a full-time teacher, sometime department head, Hatlen was enviably prolific; he once wrote me a bibliography of his published and unpublished essays that went on for eight single-spaced ...
