Abstract: Yá’át’ééh! My name is Lloyd L. Lee. I am an enrolled citizen of the Navajo Nation. My clan is Towering House (Kinyaa’áanii) born for Red Bottom (Tł’ááschíí). My maternal grandfather’s clan is Salt (Áshįįhí), and my paternal grandfather’s clan is Water’s Edge (Tábąąhá). I am a professor in the Native American Studies Department at the University of New Mexico. I am excited to assume the editorship of Wicazo Sa Review from my friend James Riding In. The journal has flourished under James’s leadership, and I am so grateful to him and to the University of Minnesota Press for this opportunity. As I develop my editorial role, I intend to honor the journal’s founders, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, William Willard, Bea Medicine, and ... • “Everything Originates from the Oral Traditions”: A Close Reading of
Cook-Lynn’s Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Dakota scholar Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, one of the founding editors of the Wicazo Sa Review (WSR), is notorious for her harsh literary critiques of Native and non-Native writers and scholars. Over the past several decades, Cook-Lynn has written a number of essays that explore how Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Adrian Louis, Louis Owens, Wallace Stegner, Walt Whitman, and many other writers use print literature to shape our knowledge of tribes and tribal nationhood.1 Although Cook-Lynn has critiqued a number of these authors and their books over the years, very few literary critics or scholars have analyzed and critically engaged with Cook-Lynn’s oeuvre, especially her novellas, short stories, and poetry. Moreover, the ... Read More

Abstract: “Why would there be iron in the water near the confluence of the spring and the river'” asked one of DeVore-Wedding’s students. The student had just learned how to test for iron ions in water in her chemistry lab and decided to test water samples she had collected along a local stream. The stream flowed from an artesian spring into the local river. The two upstream samples did not contain iron while the third sample at the mouth of the stream tested positive. To answer her own question, the student set out to learn more information about the spring and its surroundings. The next week, this student arrived in class not only with answers but excited about her new project! She had discovered a rusted car hood upstream ... Read More

  • The “Pope Scope”: Vatican Attacks on Western Apaches and Mount

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Viewed from space, present-day southeastern Arizona (and northeastern Sonora) looks a bit like Hawaii, with mountains abruptly ascending more than two miles above the “sea” of the surrounding desert. Like Hawaii’s mountains, Arizona’s isolated “Sky Islands” are bastions of ecological diversity.2 The reasons for this diversity are sociopolitical, as well as biophysical: viewed from space at night, most of these mountains are well away from population centers.3 Most are part of the 68 percent of land in Arizona under the control of the federal government or Native Nations. The “Big Island” in this desert archipelago is Mount Graham. In the Apache language, Mount Graham is Dził Nchaa Si An. Western Apaches maintain ... Read More

  • Re-Reading Ishi’s Story: Interpreting Representation in Three Worlds by
           Norman K. Denzin (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ishi (not his real name) died of tuberculosis in 1916. Theodora Kroeber’s book retelling the Yahi man’s story—and her anthropologist husband’s role in it—was sensationally titled Ishi in Two Worlds: A Biography of the Last Wild Indian in North America. Published in 1961 and wildly popular, it permits the reader an empathetic yet deeply flawed lens through which to consider Ishi and his story. Ishi in Two Worlds minimizes and even normalizes the way Ishi was treated as an exhibition for onlookers. Moreover, it necessarily omits the disturbing revelation some eighty years after Ishi’s death that his brain had been stored—and temporarily misplaced—by the Smithsonian Institution. Only in 2000 was Ishi given a belated ... Read More
