  • “Clutch[ing] Gold”: Wives, Mothers, and Property Law in The
           Ring and the Book

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Robert Browning’s epic exploration of a 1698 murder case, Count Guido Franceschini confesses to killing his wife Pompilia, confident that her alleged dishonor justifies his action and, crucially, that the money he married for will pass into his hands despite his guilt. Because his responsibility for the deed is never in question, the poem’s twelve-book, multivocal narration of Guido’s trials uses this murder less to assign blame than to invite assessments of seventeenth-century systems of gender, justice, and property. Those systems may seem remote from the companionate marriages and reformed divorce laws of the nineteenth century, yet The Ring and the Book (1868–1869) also encourages Victorian readers to judge ... • Writing for Relief: Poetry, Labor, and the Lancashire Cotton Famine
           (1861–1865)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In late December 1862, readers of the Essex Standard were met with the following appeal:To tell you that there was a famine in Lancashire would be superfluous; but, as an eye-witness, having spent a month amongst the Distressed Districts, I can bear my testimony to its reality and its intensity—a famine of cotton, a famine of work, a famine of wages; there is bread enough, thank God; but money is wanted to get it.1Its author, Wilbraham Taylor, was writing as honorary secretary of the Lancashire Supplementary Relief Committee, one of several charitable bodies founded to support the newly unemployed. This widespread and widely known distress was rooted in events of the previous year: following the outbreak of the ... Read More

  • Christina Rossetti’s Questions: Riddles, Catechisms, and Mystery

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: When do lyrics ask questions, and why'If you are a lyric reader who has adopted John Stuart Mill’s argument that poetry is something “overheard,” a form of “feeling confessing itself to itself, in moments of solitude,” questions would seem out of place.1 Why ask a question when no one is listening' Certainly literal questions, of the sort we ask every day, seem unsuited for lyric poetry. Literal questions, defined by the Cambridge Grammar of the English Language as asking about something “one does not know . . . with the aim of obtaining the answer from the addressee,”2 seem reserved for dramatic or narrative poetry. Lyrics uttered in solitude lend themselves better to speculative questions, expressions of wonder ... Read More

  • Wise Women and Strange Men: The Book of Proverbs in “Goblin
           Market”

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “Say unto wisdom, ‘Thou art my sister’”How should a wise person respond to impurity' Christina Rossetti answers this question at multiple points in The Face of the Deep, her devotional commentary on the book of Revelation. Commenting on the duty to “[f]lee defilement,” Rossetti asserts that “[p]urity follows a contrary rule to many other virtues.”1 These other virtues “are promoted by dwelling on the antagonistic vices; by coming, so to say, to close quarters with these, by waging war with them face to face.” The vice of “impurity,” however, calls for the opposite response: to “cover and turn away the eye lest it should behold it” and to “stop the ear lest it should admit it” (p. 97). Yet later in her commentary ... Read More

  • Hopkins’s “Ribblesdale”: Sifts and Riddles

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “Ribblesdale” (1882) is a “sifting” together in which the poet interrogates his beliefs, desires, and relation to his predecessors. One approach to this essentially sifting procedure at the heart of Hopkins’s “Ribblesdale” can be furthered by considering Walter Pater’s “Diaphaneitè” (1864). He defines this diaphanous quality as the power of letting one thing be seen through another: chiefly, the property of a personality or character possessing “a fine edge of light, where the elements of our moral nature refine themselves to the burning point.” This hints, nonetheless, at a substance of such finesse that it can provide a filtration and distribution facility for the sifting of impalpable qualities associated with ...
